Wednesday

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 4/17/24, 8:11 am

– Drought in most of the state.

– From the other side of the state, it looks like Lisa Brown is hitting the ground running.

– Speaking of mayors, Mayor Harrell, why?

– Leah Sottile and Sydney Brownstone are two of the best local reporters, so this is a delight.

– It’s the year of our Lordi 2024 and Washington State politicians think overturning marriage equity is a winner. Jeez, Dave Reichert.

–   Anyway, please wash your hands right now and get vaccinated or boosted  if you’re eligible.

Because Republicans are stupid attorneys for the Arizona Republican party, accidentally blast emailed the entire legislature their strategy to deal with the abortion measure coming up on the ballot. Then they begged everyone to return it and not open it and not look at it

Uh. Folks Uhm. It doesn’t work like that. The internet takes less than a second

So what was in this PowerPoint they sent to everyone on their plans? Well, the big one is probably an attempt to get ion regulations be the complete purview of the state legislature because you wouldn’t want people actually voting on something like abortion. But that’s not all the Republican Lead legislature is planning on rushing through a competing ballot measure to hopefully confuse and dilute the voting public so that neither measure measure passes or perhaps they’re much more water down measure does. Probably won’t work because people are really paying attention to abortion these days.

NPR Senior Editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning on Nazi cuddling micro-blogging platform X.

Berliner had been placed on five day suspension of duties without pay following his violation of his employment agreement with the radio network by seeking out and publishing content under his name with a fascism adjacent media network privately funded by Nazi Germany admiring billionaires. Angry and frustrated over having been passed over for promotion, Berliner used those appearances to mock and disparage his colleagues at NPR and to accuse the network’s new CEO of mismanagement and corruption. Investigators have since learned that Berliner had sought out a venue for his criticisms for months and had been turned down by dozens of reputable, objective media outlets because they viewed his highly critical essay as puerile, unsubstantiated, and incapable of confirmation in any of its specific accusations.

Having voluntarily resigned from a senior management position at the network Berliner remains bound by non compete and non disclosure clauses standard in corporate media.

@8 That reads like a restated Great Replacement theory.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Replacement_conspiracy_theory_in_the_United_States

In the United States, the populist Great Replacement conspiracy theory holds the view that “political elites” are purposefully seeking to increase the number of racial minorities in an attempt to displace the white American population. Believers in the conspiracy theory have used it as a racist trope in an attempt to advocate anti-immigration policies and dogwhistle to xenophobic ideology. The theory has received strong support in many sectors of the Republican Party.

It’s false but I know nothing we say will change your mind.

    It’s false

    It’s also fundamentally racist.

It posits a completely fabricated pretextual political/legal threat to stand in for a very real, but latent perception of threat rooted in racism.

Recent immigrants, including perfectly legal assylum seekers, are some of the most reluctant people to participate in census taking, especially under rules adopted by Republicans in recent years.
Undocumented immigrants constitute only 3% of the total population. And they certainly can’t vote, are unable to register to vote, and do not vote. Moreover, they show almost no interest in voting. And of course, lying racist pieces of shit can’t demonstrate any actual or even theoretical risk of undocumented immigrants having any impact on any elections anywhere. Because it never happens.

But the fabricated “threat” of election interference helps to provide important camoflauge for the underlying racism that fears “being outnumbered” by “others” who just happen to be non-white. So yes, of course, it really is just Great Replacement racism in disguise. And anyone who trots it out has very effectively branded themselves for all the world to see and know.

On Wednesday, following two attempts to discuss a bill that would repeal Arizona’s 1864 ban on abortions, lawmakers voted not to discuss the measure on the House floor. … ‘The last thing we should be doing today is rushing a bill through the legislative process to repeal a law that has been enacted and affirmed by the legislature several times,’ House Speaker Ben Toma said ….

Calling a black woman a jigaboo in public, while being recorded, can be expensive.

Rep. David Trone, D-Md., who was recently blasted for using a disparaging term for Black people during a House hearing, is officially the largest self-funded candidate of a Senate primary race in U.S. history.

Trone contributed $18.5 million of his own money to his Maryland Senate campaign, Fox News confirmed. And he brought in a total of over $40 million, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). No candidate running in a Senate primary has contributed this amount in recorded Senate primary history.

His use of the slur jigaboo was indeed unfortunate.

Trone recently uttered a racial slur while speaking on tax policy during a House Budget Committee hearing in March, later admitting to the remark, but saying he intended to use a different term.

Trone was trying to say spearchucker. Like in the movie M*A*S*H.

He’s right, she’ll never again “boost” NCAAW interest. As he said, “She’s gone.” To the WNBA, where she’ll boost viewer interest. After all, she shoots baskets better than men; she’s not only the all-time women’s college basketball scorer, but also the all-time college basketball scorer, period. And for that she’ll be paid $76,535 a year to play in the pros, not counting outside endorsement and marriage opportunities.

    CAMPUS
Columbia Students Claimed They Were Sprayed With an Israeli Chemical Weapon. It Was Actually Fart Spray Purchased on Amazon, New Lawsuit Says

Pro-Palestinian protesters told the Columbia Spectator they had been sprayed with “skunk,” a crowd-control chemical developed by the Israeli Defense Forces, at a rally in January. Mainstream media amplified the allegations, and Columbia suspended a student involved in the “attack”—who had previously served in IDF—within days.

The narrative was a progressive fever dream: At one of the best universities in the country, an Israeli student had deployed chemical weapons against peaceful student protesters for challenging the alleged depredations of the Jewish state.

Columbia president Minouche Shafik repeated this claim at a meeting of the university’s senate. “Demonstrators,” she said, “were sprayed with a toxic chemical.”

It now appears that the “toxic chemical” was a harmless fart spray purchased on Amazon for $26.11.

According to a lawsuit filed against Columbia on Tuesday, the suspended student had in fact dispersed “Liquid Ass”—a “gag gift for adults and kids,” per its product description—at an unsanctioned pro-Palestinian rally. He sprayed the substance in the air, not at any particular individual, in what the lawsuit describes as a “harmless expression of speech.” The result was a swift suspension for which the student is now suing, alleging that the university “rushed to silence Plaintiff and brand him as a criminal” through “biased misconduct proceedings.”

Caitlyn Clark has scored more than any man or woman NCAA player in the last 52 years. If the lack of a fourth year was the difference why couldn’t a single dude get it done in half a century?

The bros have had close to 40 years to make a run at it with both the extra year and the three point line and failed.

Not for nothing, Maravich NCAA 43.8% shooting in the era when jacking one up from distance was utterly absurd because there was no added benefit to a long distance shot.

    Caitlyn Clark 46.2%

Pete averaged 5.1 assists per game.

    Caitlyn 8.2

You can maybe make a MJ/LeBron arguement that Pete’s a better player in an era when defense was lightly played but Caitlyn Clark is the best NCAA player in the last half century

    Deal with it

Not surprising Angel Reese is your only other frame of reference. You’re not even remotely aware that. 6ft freshman led S Carolina scoring in the title game to deny Caitlyn Clark a title? That’s a story that might play out in the next 2-4 years.

“When I left Scranton today, I wanted to go to the war memorial that has the names of all of the Scrantonians who died in World War II etched into a granite wall, because I wanted to see where my uncle, uncle ‘Bosie’ Ambrose J. Finnegan, where his name was etched.”

“Back when D-Day occurred, and on Sunday, the next day, my mother’s four brothers all went down to the recruiting station and joined the military. Every one of them volunteered. And my uncle, they called him Ambrose. (inaudible) They called him ‘Bosie.’ My uncle ‘Bosie.’ He was a hell of an athlete, they told me, when he was a kid.”

“And he became an Army Air Corps before the Air Force came along. He flew those single-engine planes as reconnaissance over war zones. And he got shot down in New Guinea and they never found the body because there used to be, there are a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea.”

He was talking about his uncle, not his son; and he didn’t say his uncle’s remains were eaten by cannibals, but only expressed his personal belief that’s what happened to him. (He’s wrong about that; his uncle’s plane crashed into the sea, sank, and the bodies weren’t recovered.)

@102 I can’t walk a mile in your shoes, because (1) I can’t walk that far, and (2) as a disabled veteran I get free tabs. But I sympathize.

The light rail promoters sold the public a bill of goods. Their cost estimates were deliberately lowball (some years ago, I calculated it actually came to roughly $28,000 per household within the taxing area). They further deceived the public by splitting the project into three stages, each paid for with another layer of taxes.

You did get opportunities to vote against it. I voted against it, too. But gullible voters fell for ST’s lies. We got Trump that way, too. I get out of paying the ST license tax (but not the ST sales tax); I didn’t get out of living under the Trump presidency.

We have another election this year, not on ST to be sure, but on Trump. Maybe more of our fellow voters will be less gullible this time. We can only hope and pray.

Goalpost-moving is football, not basketball, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit.

I responded to a question about the absence of record-breaking NCAA career runs in the men’s side of basketball, with two observations:

    • early entry into the NBA takes the most likely players to break NCAA scoring records away from the NCAA
    • tighter defense is played by men than by women at the collegiate level (also pro, but that’s another topic).

I didn’t say Caitlin Clark is not phenomenal. She is. But Maravich, in his college days, was better. So was Bill Walton. So was Lew Alcindor.

One reason, among quite a few others that Caitlin Clark is so phenomenal is because the women’s collegiate game sucks. Hopefully it won’t always suck, but today it does. When everyone around you sucks, it’s easier to appear phenomenal by comparison.

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, in the NBA the Warriors’ Stephen Curry hits 3-point shots from all over the place. He only played three seasons of collegiate ball, in a small conference, before declaring for the NBA draft.

As a collegian, Steph Curry had a better 3-point FG career percentage than did Caitlin Clark, and he had a better overall FG career percentage than did Caitlin Clark. When stationary, he also had a better FT career percentage than did Caitlin Clark.

Until tonight, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit, you had never heard of Steph Curry. Maybe that’s because of your dismissive attitude toward black people.

I won’t be benefiting from Metro’s new battery buses on order. At least not directly. South Base will get those, but that will send some of the 7300 series hybrids that are operated out of South to East Base, freeing up some of the older buses to be sent to North and the Central Campus. Anything is better than the 7000s used on the 31/32, my connecting route I catch at U-District Station. Was on one a few days ago that turned out had been in a fender bender that affected the suspension. Coach 7113, thought since the coach is of a model that has been out of production for 12 years, it would be stripped for parts and sent to the Alley off Holgate or to South Base Annex, Metro’s Boneyards. Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit has no idea that the surge in ticket prices is due to scalping. The season tickets have already been sold, pricing is set, and whatever premium to face value goes to scalpers or to Ticketmaster. Same thing happens during the Super Bowl.

    $7.19/EA

    Upper 226
    Row h • 1-3 or 5 Tickets

    Upper 211

Why, tickets there start at only $30. How do I know this? From a link in Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit’s @ 129 silly spew.

Why only $30? Because you buy a ticket at the box office, not from a scalper. Indianapolis has a big arena and there are lots and lots of seats.

Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit posted a couple of weekends ago that home prices are high because supply is low. Well, if the LA Sparks would sell 18,000 tickets (its arena’s capacity) instead of only 4,200, it wouldn’t cost so much per ticket to see Caitlin Clark. Instead of yammering for the white girl to be paid more, why doesn’t Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit endeavor to open up some of the closed-off arena seating?

The 7000s aren’t the oldest in the Metro Fleet, but close. That honor goes to the roughly 5-10 remaining 2009 New Flyer DE60LFs, but those are due to be retired soon. Some of the mechanics on a bus fan facebook group have given the “Ride ‘em while you can” warning. Metro’s new at retiring buses at only 12-15 years, which is what a bus’s usual lifespan. A rail vehicle, tends to last longer. The last American streetcar design of the classic era, still run in SF, and Boston, and are about to return again, to Philadelphia (after another rebuild). San Diego got about 30 years out of their first Light Rail Vehicles, even revived a tradition of American operators of the 1950s, selling the used vehicles to Latin American operators.

    https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/King_County_Metro#On_order

The Lynwood extension, my big complaint, is the FARE CUT the Snohomish County users will be getting. Community Transit’s commuter fare was $4.25-$4.50, but the new flat fare on LINK will be $3.00. I currently pay $2.25 if it’s between Ranier Valley stations under the current distance base system, $2.75 to U-District, it’s the same as Metro, don’t mind the small increase coming, Metro’s overdue for a fare increase, rumors it will be going to $3. First week of the month my employer pays($30). The biggest increase will be for those going between Downtown stations. I remember when LINK Started, ST chose not to participate in the Ride Free Area, If they did, it would have been a higher base fare. The Ride Free Area was great for downtown circulation, but bad for those on routes passing through Downtown. Many times when I caught the 7 on Broadway, had to pay twice, because of Pay as you leave, couldn’t use the back door.

First time in decades that major legislation moved out of rules relying on minority votes.

Meanwhile, the Republican package of border security measures that President Biden and Senate Democrats had gift wrapped to Republicans months ago required a suspension of the rule to get to the floor this morning. Which means in order to pass it has to get two thirds.

And so the Republican dream package of huge budget increases for Guatemalan Toddler Torture dies. And they will never see its like again in this or any other lifetime.

The next time a Republican gets a chance to vote on border security it will be part of sweeping immigration reform legislation to streamline asylum, expand DACA, and offer pathways to legal residency and citizenship for ten million undocumented immigrants forced to live in the shadows.
