– A stripper’s bill of rights (second item) sounds like something Fox News commentator would use to make fun of a Best Coast governor. And yet, it is clearly the right thing, and I am glad Governor Inslee signed it, and that he emphasized workplace rights.

– The culture at SPD needs a real kick in the ass. Jeez.

– Landlord Lives Matter, oh brother.

– Anyway, what a great time to wash your hands. And to make an appointment to get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Reuben Gallego won the Senate seat yesterday.

If you aren’t following, in a court fling Kari Lake admitted that her attacks on Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer about the election that was stolen from her by Richter printing ballots incorrectly (false) and inserting 30,000 votes into the count that didn’t exist (false) she knew was not true and therefore, defamatory.

Yet in a video statement explaining her decision, Lake insisted her legal capitulation has nothing to do with conceding that her statements were wrong — even though her court papers admit that they were. Instead, she said it was a strategic move allowing her to focus her attention on her campaign for the U.S. Senate.
The only thing left to determine is how big a boat is Richer buying with Kari’s money.

But Donald could. He wants Bibi to finish them.

More than half of Americans — 55 percent — said they disapprove of Israel’s military action in Gaza, while 36 percent approve of it, according to the poll, which surveyed 1,016 U.S. adults this month. Nine percent said they had no opinion on the matter. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.

I can think of nothing that could go wrong with have only election deniers working for every candidate in 2024. Almost 32% of voters agree that it was rigged.

The Republican National Committee is asking prospective job candidates if they believe the 2020 election was stolen in a “litmus tests of sorts” following the Trump-backed purge of the party committee, according to the Washington Post.

Trump advisers have “quizzed” multiple employees who worked in key 2024 states about their views on the 2020 election, according to the report.

So as IDF begins the final phase of its campaign to eliminate Hamas from Gaza, a whole 5% more Americans dislike the campaign than disliked the campaign two months ago:

In all, 50% of U.S. adults now believe Israel’s military offensive has gone beyond what it should have, the poll found. That’s up from 40% in an AP-NORC poll conducted in November.

Finish them, Bibi. The incremental consequences are miniscule, and the American president next year will be a Republican.

That’s quite a remarkable shift there in Alabama.

From the Tuesday night DL thread @ 5:

Election results from Madison County provided as a service of Probate Judge Frank Barger and the county’s election team.

Total Ballots Cast: 5,965 Total Registered Voters: 321,678 Voter Turnout: 1.85% Boxes Reported: 100.00% Last Updated: 03/26/2024 08:42:39 PM

The remarkable shift in Alabama yesterday was the miniscule turnout of 1.85% in that special election distric. Contrast that to the 2020 general election, in which voter turnout in Alabama was 63%.

I suspect the 2024 AL turnout will be even higher after four years of particularly awful corruption and incompetence in the White House. Any hopes that this district will still vote blue in November are unserious.

    Three takeaways:

    1. I did not lie.
    2. I acknowledge the corrected data.
    3. Even with the corrected data, only a very small percent of registered voters turned out last night, and roughly 4.5x that percentage will turn out to cast their vote in November.

Last night was turnout dominated by partisan liberals. November turnout in the district in question will be dominated by Trump supporters.

Watch this seat flip back in November.

Florida was first with 10 cases as of March 12, nine linked to an elementary school in Broward County and one in Polk County, according to data from the Florida Department of Health.

Illinois has reported the most measles cases in recent weeks, with 17 total infections reported in Chicago.

Rising oil prices may pressure the Biden administration ahead of U.S. elections, with gas potentially reaching $4/gallon by May.
The forecast hinges on no supply, demand, or U.S. policy response; strategic petroleum reserves could mitigate price spikes.

Gee, it’s too bad Biden already released all that oil from the US SPR already. Otherwise he might be able to prop up oil supply in the months to come.

Okay, so maybe the landlord in this case is a multimillionaire, and that’s a business risk he willingly assumed. (We don’t know that for sure.) Even if, do deep pockets justify a nonpaying tenant who won’t leave?

More broadly, there are nightmare landlords, but also nightmare tenants (not to mention squatters who lawlessly take over properties), and our laws should tolerate neither.

Re Upping the same previously mocked and easily discarded metric as before only goes to show clearly how Trump The Rapist has trained them all to ignore facts and evidence whenever it conflicts with the projected MAGA image.

For months this silly lying idiot troll has been parading one modeled sample of 900 to 1,200 imaginary voters responding to various squishy questions as ABSOLUTE PROOF that by next year Donald Trump will have become the new Supreme Leader and Hillary will finally face her long anticipated frog-march of shame.

But the instant he is faced with an actual election result with five times that number of actual for-realsies voters he can only respond by rejecting it out of hand offering no actual argument even for how or why those actual voters are somehow not representative of the population.

Of course there is an argument to be made here. Special election turnout is often smaller and often skewed. But at this point the increasingly shitty troll is simply too brainwashed with MAGA foolishness to even get to it. Some exit polling analysis of this population of special election voters would certainly come in handy in support of such an argument. But not for a brain-fucked MAGA true believer.

“I am frankly tired and sickened by the battle with visionaries that don’t have a clue and who bring discredit to the party of Lincoln … they realize that if they are deceitful enough, loud enough, obnoxious enough and demanding enough, they will find a path to the inside. Over the past few weeks, I have seen this group and their candidates making in-roads I never would have believed possible and in seeing that, I realize that it is my time to go.”

Luzerne County (Scranton) GOP vice chair Joe Valenti on Wednesday said he also resigned effective immediately. Pribula said the organization’s secretary, treasurer, financial secretary and the 120th District clerk also have resigned from the 11-member executive committee. https://www.newsweek.com/thousands-solar-panels-texas-destroyed-hailstorm-1883546

Solar panels are built to be fairly durable to the elements and can continue to produce energy if damaged. Research by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory suggests hail-cracked panels have less than four percent energy loss.

The incident portrays the struggle between efforts to combat climate change and extreme weather events that global warming is predicted to increase the frequency and severity of. Droughts linked to climate change have previously led to a reduction of hydropower capacity in California, while a winter storm in Texas in 2021 crippled its power grid. Fossil fuel production in the state was also impacted by a cold snap being pushed farther south than usual in 2022.

This particular specimen graduated from a Catholic high school in the Detroit area, and has no higher education that I can find. He’s touted as a “businessman,” which in practice means he owns a bail bond company.

His most prominent (and creative) legislative contribution consists of introducing a bill that would require fact-checkers to register with the state and post a surety bond.

His wife is a former co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party and is one of the 16 Michigan Republicans indicted in the fake electors scheme. A helpful witness for the prosecution (not intentionally), she “publicly bragged about the Trump campaign’s involvement in the fake elector scheme.”

Given this background, it’s not surprising that he jumped to the conclusion that a mostly-white basketball team were “illegal invaders” from south of the border. The real lesson here is he’s an all-too-typical example of what the GOP’s candidate recruitment has descended to. Fascinating piece in the sense that Politico never stops to ponder if these ‘Democrats’ for RFK Jr. are lying about party affiliation. The evidence suggests, yes.

Cahill, 50, is a formerly reliable Democratic voter who was alienated by what he sees as a leftward drift into policies he can’t abide — like a Covid-19 vaccine mandate that almost cost him his firefighting job.

What do we know about people who refused to ‘get the jab’?

Of Americans surveyed from Sept. 13-22, 72% of adults 18 and older had been vaccinated, including 71% of white Americans, 70% of Black Americans, and 73% of Hispanics. Contrast these converging figures with disparities based on politics: 90% of Democrats had been vaccinated, compared with 68% of Independents and just 58% of Republicans. – Brookings

    They go on.

Today, RFK Jr.’s supporters tend to place a corrupt government at the root of America’s ills. They ask not what their government can do for them but what it has done to them.

The bridge is in Maryland, which is a blue state. Repair the bridge? Fuck no! say Republicans.

Key Bridge, they argue, is a regional matter to be tackled by regional governments. “The very thought of having the Federal Government pay for the Baltimore bridge is TOTALLY ABSURD!!” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) told The Hill by text message. “This exemplifies the old slogan ‘ROBBING PETER TO PAY PAUL!!’”

    https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4562537-battle-heats-up-over-proposed-federal-funding-for-baltimore-bridge/

Except the bridge was hit by a ship, and maritime trade is a federal matter. Navigable waterways? A federal matter. It certainly appears federally-controlled activity is responsible for the bridge collapse. So why shouldn’t the federal government be responsible for a bridge over a federal waterway hit by a federally regulated ship?

Because Republicans have zero understanding of federalism and the division of responsibilities between the federal government and states, that’s why. When farm states send farmers who don’t know beans about anything except beans to Congress, that’s what you go. Also, I don’t think they teach basic civics in red state schools, as far as I can determine; that’s been replaced by Bible classes.

    Please repeat after me:

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FEDERAL PAROLE. THERE ARE NO FEDERAL PAROLE BOARDS AND NO FEDERAL PAROLE OFFICERS.

Don’t be a useless dipshit. We have enough Republicans already spreading bullshit.

In addition to the calculated and imposed sentence handed down today by Judge Kaplan there is an automatic subsequent motion hearing afforded where the defendant may argue sentencing factors to be applied after judicial sentencing. But just as with all the factors already argued previously and used in determining the defendant’s judicial sentence, these additional factors are formulaic within a narrow range set forth in statute by Congress.

And of course as any defendant does post sentencing, the defendant here may also file a federal appeal of his sentence to be heard before the 9th Circuit.

Sentence appeals are very expensive. But they are also unpredictable and complex. And this piece of shit defendant has money and connections possibly willing to help him. If he can come up with the money, if he can find excellent lawyers willing to handle his appeal, and if Kaplan and BOP made errors in how they calculated sentence, he might see some real time taken off his sentence. But that’s a long shot. And we won’t know how that turns out for years, by which time we won’t care.

Finally, this defendant has already been in prison since August of last year over his efforts to tamper with witnesses. And that time already served in custody will be calculated into the determination of his actual release date by the BOP.

Before they invented automatic machinery to wash clothes laundry was so laborious and expensive that business types would only wash the collars and cuffs after each wearing. The rest of the shirt had to go for days.

My very first 2BR/1BA house was built in 1937 and contained exactly 25 square feet of closet space. The original owner had one good suit, one “older” suit, and one suit that he wore doing yardwork.

Things change. Life moves on. Today people throw clothing away rather than wash it. Everyone has laundry machines in their own homes. Some have multiple sets. And mountains of shirts pants, shorts, workout gear, special costumes for bike riding, tennis, fishing, partying, going to kid’s soccer, pride parades, Halloween, Christmas sweaters, etc. Clothes are cheap. Laundry is cheap. We are all Imelda Marcos.

I actually like Eugene Robinson but this is a stupid column.

If the MAGA faithful do buy those Bibles and look inside, however, they will find myriad reasons to forsake their profoundly flawed political hero.

They need only read as far as Exodus 20, in which Moses comes down from the mountain and pronounces the Ten Commandments. “Thou shalt not commit adultery” is an injunction Trump has bragged about habitually violating, as heard on the “Access Hollywood” tape. In that same recording, he also boasted about violating another commandment — “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife” — by saying he “did try and f—” a married woman.

It is abundantly clear and has been for decades that the American Evangelical movement is not remotely concerned with the text of the bible, see “prosperity gospel.”

This is a showoff item for anyone who buys it. I have a copy of Infinite Jest on my bookshelf. I’ve tried to read it a couple times and give up. I have a shit ton of books that I picked up when my grandparents died because they’re old and really nice binding from when publishing books was a handcrafted thing. Haven’t read them except I have read The Secret Garden and I own the first American print edition from 1911. Visiting it with my kids it is a remarkably racist book in the first chapter. 99% of the people who own War and Peace have the intention of reading it one day and 98% of those will die before they do. The people who say they’ve read it, 96% of them are lying.

No one intends to read this thing. They’re going to put in on the shelf face out so their MAGA friends can be impressed. There is no intention of reading it. That’s what the paperback New American Bible is for and they haven’t read that either. They may have read that English Standard Version that was very specifically created to put the uppity women back in their place.

In January, legislators in Maryland introduced a similar bill before rescinding it months later.

Travel records from the North Dakota School Boards Association show that former state senator Ray Holmberg used public funding for trips in 2011, 2018 and 2019 to Prague in the Czech Republic and to other cities, including Amsterdam and Berlin. The trips were arranged through the Germany-based Global Bridges teacher exchange program, which received funding from the North Dakota Legislature.

Republican Youngkin vetoes bills to raise Virginia’s minimum wage and allow legal retail cannabis sales
    https://www.wric.com/news/politics/capitol-connection/youngkin-vetoes-democrat-led-bills-to-raise-virginias-minimum-wage-and-open-legal-retail-cannabis-market/
Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed bills to raise Virginia’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026 and open a recreational cannabis retail market, killing two Democratic priorities the day after the Alexandria arena deal crumbled.
    >> Someone is salty because their incredibly grifty arena project got completely shut down…
    >> Or Youngkin and the republicans don’t want the tax revenue from legal weed sales because then they wouldn’t have any excuse to cut public services.
    >> A lot of Virginians didn’t want to believe he veto it. They said in the campaign he wouldn’t stand in the way of legalization. He was a businessman who wouldn’t turn down all that revenue. Vote better next time.

    109,

Regrets can be difficult feelings for older “conservatives” to process.
But there are finally indications that some of them are beginning the painful process of turning away from rage and grievance to embrace change.

At least it’s better than tasing yourself to death in the nut sack.

I had just made the biggest gamble of my political career—a $1.7 million gamble—and it had paid off. Running for reelection to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from Missouri, I had successfully manipulated the Republican primary so that in the general election I would face the candidate I was most likely to beat. “Virginia Gov. Youngkin eyes a 15-week abortion ban as a ‘consensus’ voters would back”

“Let me be clear, I believe in the fundamental Right to Work. If anyone tries to bring me a bill that creates forced unionization, it will meet the business end of my veto pen.”

“Pursuant to Article V, Section 6, of the Constitution of Virginia, I veto House Bill 157 which
removes the farmworker exemption from the Virginia Minimum Wage Act.” Yep, it’s OK to pay farm workers (illegals?) lower than minimum wage.

“Pursuant to Article V, Section 6, of the Constitution of Virginia, I veto House Bill 974, which
allows certain evidence for specific injuries arising from employment related to workers’
compensation. ” Injured at work….fuck off.

“Pursuant to Article V, Section 6, of the Constitution of Virginia, I veto Senate Bill 696, which
requires a mandatory hearing to review reducing sentences for individuals currently incarcerated
or on community supervision for felony marijuana convictions.” Youngkin goes on to spout about the horrible unfairness of violent criminals and murders getting out of jail early when this bill SPECIFICALLY states convicts whose only conviction is for a non-violent felony possession.

“Virginia is closer to withdrawing from a regional carbon market at the end of the year following Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s completion of a review of new regulations aimed at removing the state from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.”

All in for the conviceted rapist too/

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) endorsed Donald Trump for president Wednesday night, posting a message on the social media site X calling the former president the best choice for “strong leadership.”

It’s undisputed that Mason was ineligible to vote in the 2016 election. But she didn’t know that, and a poll worker told her she could cast a provisional ballot, which wasn’t counted. Despite that she was sentenced to 5 years in prison for Voting While Black. Why it took Texas courts 6 years to set this atrocity straight is a mystery, and Texas being TexAss, I didn’t really expect this outcome, but the state that elects the likes of Ted Crud, Greg Abbott, and Ken Paxton finally did something right.

@128 You said, “That is a moderate position.” Really?

I think a crucial point that was missed in this report was the explanation of why an abortion ban at 15 weeks is an extreme position. On the surface a ban at 15 weeks seems like it could be a moderate compromise – I can imagine many listeners wondering why on earth any pregnancy would need to be terminated after 15 weeks? Well, that is the piece of the puzzle that I rarely, if ever hear articulated in reporting. … Most women who get devastating news that there is a major problem with their pregnancy don’t get that news until 20 weeks – 5 weeks AFTER the proposed federal ban.

There’s a reason the right is always bleating about “Late Term” abortion but not “Late Terms.”

VA law, as is the law in many states allows abortion up to the third Trimester. That’s about 26 weeks. That’s also known as the ‘fetal viability standard’. Regionally, Ohio, Deleware, Pennsylvania set the same standard. in the region West Virginia Kentucky and Tennessee have enacted a complete ban and North Carolina until it goes full blue in 2024 has a 12 week standard.

    Nice try.

Trump seems to be adopting a strategy that Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin deployed unsuccessfully last year during his state’s legislative elections. Youngkin got several GOP candidates to support a 15-week abortion ban, thinking such a ban would serve as a consensus option that Virginia voters would find reasonable.

But he was wrong. Very wrong.

When all was said and done, Virginia Democrats held the state Senate and flipped the House of Delegates in their favor, dashing Youngkin’s hopes of imposing a decidedly conservative agenda. And with their anti-abortion extremism, Republicans may be headed toward a similar scenario at the national level.
    —
What do WOMEN think is the appropriate number of weeks and under what conditions? Because that’s all that really matters. When men can get pregnant, then they can have a say on abortion restrictions.

The Biden administration decides that Israel should Finish Them.

U.S. signs off on more bombs, warplanes for Israel

The Biden administration in recent days quietly authorized the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and fighter jets to Israel despite Washington’s concerns about an anticipated military offensive in southern Gaza that could threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians.

The new arms packages include more than 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK82 500-pound bombs, according to Pentagon and State Department officials familiar with the matter.

Last week, the State Department authorized the transfer of 25 F-35A fighter jets and engines worth roughly $2.5 billion, U.S. officials said. The case was approved by Congress in 2008, so the department was not required to provide a new notification to lawmakers.

The MK84 and MK82 bombs authorized this week for transfer also were approved by Congress years ago but had not yet been fulfilled.
