Three-strikes laws don’t seem to work very well in practice, but society is in need of some option to keep career criminals like this guy off the streets permanently. This guy was too smart to shoot at the cops or try to escape in the vehicle so cops could say he was trying to run them down; he merely fled from them on foot (and was caught). Washington has implement an indefinite civil commitment scheme for persistent sexual offenders; maybe that program could be expanded to certain other types of offenders? Yes, it’s expensive to taxpayers to keep people like this off the streets, but it’s more expensive to have them on the streets. I don’t know the answer to this.
