Federal authorities are investigating allegations that a California defense contractor arranged for a Washington area limousine company to provide prostitutes to convicted former congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-Calif.) and possibly other lawmakers, sources familiar with the probe said yesterday.
In recent weeks, investigators have focused on possible dealings between Christopher D. Baker, president of Shirlington Limousine and Transportation Inc., and Brent R. Wilkes, a San Diego businessman who is under investigation for bribing Cunningham in return for millions of dollars in federal contracts, said one source, who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Baker has a criminal record and has experienced financial difficulties, public records show. Last fall, his company was awarded a $21 million contract with the Department of Homeland Security to provide transportation, including limo service for senior officials.

Electronic Freedom Foundation, an internet privacy-advocacy group, has filed a lawsuit against AT&T alleging the network company is “colluding with the National Security Agency to make communications on AT&T networks available to the spy agency without warrants.”
Department of Justice lawyers have intervened in the case, and in a court filing yesterday, requested dismissal of EFF’s lawsuit against AT&T on the grounds it “threatens to expose government and military secrets,” according to the Associated Press.
“The administration added that its bid to intervene in the case should not be viewed as a concession that the allegations are true,” AP dutifully reported.

The reason you have to do the piss test in front of someone else is to prevent the testee from substituting someone else’s urine for their tainted sample. (Yes, it does happen. Ewww.) He’ll also have to submit to random testing — meaning his supervisory officer can randomly show up at his place of work, at his house, whatever, and make him pee in a cup.
He oughtn’t be allowed to be in places that serve alcohol without express permission from his supervisor, nor should he be taking any prescription medication without informing his supervisor of it. He’ll also likely have to refrain from having any alcohol or other potentially addictive substances in his home as a condition of supervision. If he does use illegal substances and tries to mask that use with one of the many products on the market that claim to work for that purpose, the testing that is done is designed to also pick up masking agents and their results as well.
And he’ll be required to check in regularly with his supervisor for a face to face chat, and to ask permission for travel or schedule changes that will take him outside the agreed-upon curfew hours. Just like everyone else. (Or, again, they are giving him special treatment.)
Should be an interesting 18 months for a man with an ego as big as Rush’s is. This isn’t an easy thing for a true addict to deal with — if he successfully completes treatment and sincerely wants to change, then he will likely make it through. You’ll pardon me if my prosecutor’s skepticism shows through on this a bit — oxycontin is a tough one to get past, and any — and I mean any — usage will get picked up by testing during that 18 month period.

As for Congressman Cunningham, it showed that DC can corrupt anybody. I was watching a documentary on the History Channel about Great Dogfiights by American Pilots, including Rickenbacker, one from WWII, Korea, and representing Vietnam, was Cunningham and Driscoll(his RIO). The Vietnam fight was described by Cunningham and Driscoll, and it was hard to believe that this great Pilot could become a Corrupt Congressmember. The F-4 he was flying on that mission was minus the Gun Pod as something had to be left behind to carry both AAMs and Bombs(it was a bombing mission). After they hit the target, they were jumped by North Vietnamese MiGs. He had to dogfight a MiG-17 armed with cannon, with a Phantom only carrying Missiles. The MiG kept trying to close in to shoot, they were trying to get away from the MiGs fire off a sidewinder. It was not like in the movies. On that mission they shot down 3, combined with 2 they already had, made them one of the first Phantom Aces of the Vietnam War. It turned out later that their last kill had been the NVAF’s best pilot.

Based your comments above and the rest of comments made by you in your post it appears that you have an intrinsic knowledge of the processes based on experience; were you an active participant?
Your assumption that Rush is crook only denigrates your credibility. Having an addiction and recovering from it does not make a person a crook. Are you ready to convict many of the homeless in Seattle? Rush did not plead guilty to any charge perpetrated by a left wing prosecutor.

My point was that the ACLU actually looked beyond politics and got to personal rights to all citizens, and thus defended Rush against having the govt pry into his confidential medical files. For all you who think this prosecutor is onto something, please post your medical files on the internet so we can all be entertained.
Now this is the same ACLU you folks have attacked for defending the rightd of other unpopular groups, isn’t it?

There was quite an exchange a while back about the ACLU . And no, I did not keep track of what position you took. I do recall that I went to their site and copied here their mission statement.
And it includes defending the unpopular: Nazi’s, NAMBLA, and Limbaugh.
I am not a member of the ACLU, and a I am not a fan of all of their crusades, but I do give them credit for taking unpopular stands.
Which brings me back to my point – the ACLU is defending a basic right. Many on this site don’t care for that right because it is in defense of a conservative. roger? Goldy? don’t hear a lot from you on basic human rights.
Will Janet S be willing to send her son to Iraq? Will she be willing to let Bush’s big oil buddies drill in her back yard? See how easy it is to turn a so-called conservative’s arguments back at them?

Are you projecting again? Anyone who is a knowledgeable supporter of the ACLU realizes that this organization will defend the rights of all, regardless of ideology. This is the only sound way of protecting the constitution. Notice that the ACLU was founded and run by liberals. Shouldn’t that tell you something?
If you are really complaining about polarization, pot, meet kettle. A foundational premise of the new right is that polarized, good-and-evil memes are the key to electoral success. This dominates Republican efforts at both the federal and state levels. Grover Norquist sums up this attitude by arguing that any state elected leader who engages in bipartisanship has succumbed to “rape.”
This us-against-them attitude has poisoned the waters of political discourse. In my lifetime I don’t recall ever seeing so much polarization, particularly in Washington state, which has a right history of bipartisanship.

Sometimes they make BIG mistakes and other times they perform their originally chartered job as in the case of Rush Limbaugh.
