Darcy Burner lost ground after yesterday’s ballot dumps, and now trails Dave Reichert by about 1,800 votes, with about half the ballots counted. And of course, that’s a very discouraging trend.
That said, it may not represent a trend at all, as at the moment we have absolutely no idea where these ballots came from, either geographically or temporaly. These could be early absentees. These could be recent arrivals. These could be a random sample. Your guess is as good as mine.
For those following the results from outside Washington state, it is important to remember that unlike neighboring Oregon, ballots must merely be postmarked by election day, and they’ll continue to arrive for days. So once (if?) King and Pierce counties catch up with the ballots on hand we’ll have a much better idea of the status of this race.

Tuesday I “worked” Crossroads with my Bama-Burner encrusted Inferrari and a hand full of Bama bucks.
To my surprise, I parked near to a K Co voter ballot drop off box and it was very busy. My guess is that these ballots and mail-ins were a large part of the Eastside vote.
Using my covert Massad training in psychological profiles. I would guestimate that the dem rep mix was about 50 50 or worse for us. Having said that, I am rather allergic to reps and am likely to overestimate the importance of certain car brands in my evaluation. OTOH, when I went in the mall, I ofund only 1/5 people who did not take a bama buck and thank me. OTOH, I again may have prejudiced this survey by my judicious choices of who not to approach.
Lets hope for the best. I recommend prayers to Raven, the great NW deity of wisdom and trickery.

A welfare case. What was that about “redistributing” right wingers?
Ahhh the taint. Why couldn’t “Joe””s family be strong enough to “work hard” and “pull themselves up by their bootstraps”.
Of such material right wing fairy tales are made.

That King County lags in counting is a very, very positive sign for Peter Goldmark. I won’t say it’s in the bag for him, but as I write he’s already 1.6% ahead of Sutherland, with King and Snohomish (where he’s getting 52% of the votes) still processing at least 400,000 votes between them.
One strange thing about the Public Lands race is Thurston County. It’s ordinarily a reliably Democratic county (Obama 60%, Gregoire 58%), but Sutherland is getting nearly 54% of the county’s vote. It really is an ingrown place, that Olympia.
I think we can definitely call the Tresurer race for Jim McIntire. He’s currently up almost 4%, and leads by a hefty margin in slow-processing King, Snohomish, and Pierce.

If he was raised on welfare and is off it as an adult he did pull himself up by his bootstraps.

It’s not that he or his family had to be on welfare. The poster was pointing out the sheer, unabashed, rank, hypocrisy for someone to scream and shill about spreading wealth when he himself needed government to get out of poverty.

My wife grew up on welfare. Her mother was divorced when she was six, and her father was injured on the job shortly thereafter, and had to go through a re-training program after which he was able to eventually start a business which became comfortably profitable over time. But with him unable to provide much in the way of child support, and my wife’s mother unable to get a job and care for three children at the same time, welfare was the only option.
As for my wife, she graduated from high school at age 16, went on to college on a combination of Basic Aid (later called Pell Grants), combined with federally-subsidized student loans and federally-funded student aid. We married at age 21 while I was just finishing my undergraduate studies and working part-time, and she had two jobs (secretary at the university during the day, Burger King nights and weekends). Her mother moved in with us within six months of us getting married, and we largly supported her until she died some sixteen years later. In my home, anyone having only one job (or less) wasn’t pulling their fare share of the load.
So I would hardly criticize Joe the Plumber for his family having to go on welfare, any more than I would criticize my wife for growing up on welfare. It turned out to be a very good investment of government resources, as my wife has more than paid back into the system many times over what she received from it as a child.
I guess some modern-day conservatives would argue that they should have lived in a hovel and roamed the streets scrounging for food while their mother worked days and nights at below minimum wage, but that wouldn’t exactly be “family values”, would it?
But that’s kind of the point. It’s not that Joe the Plumber is at fault for his family being on welfare when he was a child. I’m not even going to blame him for being behind on his taxes at some point or another, as long as he pays them when he is able, along with penalties and interest.
Our complaint is that (a) it just goes to show McCain’s inability to properly vet people before placing them in important roles (Joe was to be the lynchpin of the final days of his campaign); (b) lots of people need a hand up from time-to-time, including Joe and his family, and (c) this just goes to show the bankruptcy of the neo-conservative idea that low taxes are always good and welfare is always bad, and (d) as an example, Joe the Plumber never represented anything like what the McCain campaign said he did.
I feel sorry for Joe the Plumber. Sure, he personally got used in this process. Sure, he stepped into it by asking a completely hypothetical question about taxes as if it really affected his situation (it didn’t). But the McCain campaign used him, and now he’s having to pay the price personally with the continued bad publicity directed at him.

Rahm Emmanuel accepts the job as Obama’s Chief of Staff.
That’s a tough job. He has three young kids. Only an empty nester should accept that job.
In order to do that job well, he’ll have to completely divorce himself from his family. Oh well, a congressman’s life is like that too I guess.
rhp6033 spews:
YLB @ 13: Kind of like Leo McGarry, huh? The West Wing series started out with the collapse of the McGarry marriage due to his work commitments.
But it seems to me that not that many people keep the Chief of Staff job for more than a two or three years. Either that’s the limit of time someone can handle the workload & pressure, or the Chief of Staff is the first one sacrificed if the administration needs a turn-around (real, or symbolically).

YLB @2
. Not true. My msg about this race hasn’t changed for weeks. Reichert’s going to win this thing because he’s the right match for WA-08. Those of us who live in this district KNOW he’s a good man, a great representative and has integrity.
Face it, you backed a serial exaggerator who got busted. Voters take that kind of thing seriously.

I am not sure that this will have much impact, but I have learned that in King County 15 precincts have not been counted and of these 15 look to be located in the 8th congressional district. Five are in the 5th LD and city of Sammamish. Seven are in the 41st LD and in the city of Bellevue. Another three are located in the 11th and could be in or out of the 8th.
These uncounted precincts could amount to between 45,000 and 60,000 votes.
King County elections says the ballots did not read at the polling place and had to be taken to the county elections office and run through a counter. At this point their is no reason they could give as to why these ballots had not been counted. When pressed I was told that they would get around to it today or in the coming days.
Nice. Take your time….why not….go to lunch…get paid…
