Apparently, both The Stranger and I got fed the same story this afternoon, and to Eli Sanders’ credit, he got it online first. Check out his piece on Slog about Republican backed voter registration challenges in Summit County Ohio. Or read the contemporary reporting on MyDD:
The Summit County Board of Elections abruptly threw out 976 challenges of voter eligibility by the Republican Party today after Barbara Miller, the challenger, revealed that she did not have any personal information about the eligibility of any of the challenged voters.
Sounds eerily familiar, huh? Only these challenges occurred over a year ago, just days before the 2004 general election. As Sanders points out, Lori Sotelo’s challenges did not occur in a vacuum.
During the 2004 presidential election, in hotly contested Ohio, Republicans issued hundreds of flawed voter challenges that ultimately failed for exactly the same reason that King County Republican Lori Sotelo’s challenges failed this year

You’re right Goldy and here’s why we can’t win…our old thinking, i.e., we’re above the dirty tricks, just won’t cut it. We have to be as dirty as they are so I plan to take a cue from the GOP. I plan to challenge republican voters in republican counties all over the state in the days just leading up to the election. Since it appears that I don’t need any personal knowledge to back up my claims, what can the GOP do about it?
We need to fight fire with fire. These dirty cowardly bastards will stop at nothing and we need to match them tit for tat. If we don’t, we’ll face another cycle of republican corruption.

Goldy,
Given what we now know, it would be naive to view the Sotelo challenges in any other context.

Regardless, illegal votes shouldn’t be counted. A better system is needed to verify that a voter values their responsibility enough to follow the voting rules. The rule should also be simplified and easily understandable.
Register the same day as the election, provide a valid address, and signature and SSN. Provide an ID when voting. That should solve all the voting problems, but not all the counting problems.
Green Thumb spews:
Left Turn, I can sympathize with your strategy, but I think it could backfire for two reasons:
1) You are handing the Republicans the excuse that

2) We’ll never be as effective at the Rovians because we don’t have larceny in our veins. And if you recruit lefty-style Rovians, they won’t relinquish their power willingly. Progressivism will turn ugly.
I don’t think the choice is between extreme passivity and Rovian mendacity. However, given the polarized dialogue in these comment threads, I doubt a “middle way” will find much support here.

Richard Pope spews:
Sorry Goldy — YOU’RE WRONG! And so is Eli Sanders.
Ohio law doesn’t require challengers to prove where the voter actually lives. It merely requires challengers to prove the voter doesn’t live where they are registered.
The Ohio challenges were rejected because the GOP’s evidence was deficient. The GOP sent certified mail to the voters — several hundred of whom refused it because it came from the Republican Party. Obviously, refusing to accept certified mail doesn’t prove that someone doesn’t live at that address.

“Judge throws out plea agreement in voter registration fraud case, sentences man to jailBy Rachel McCormick
RACINE – Damien Donnelle Jones was expecting to receive only a fine for his actions in October 2004, when several employees he supervised with the Project Vote campaign were found to be fraudulently filling out voter registration applications. Instead, he’s going to jail.
Jones was scheduled to begin his jury trial Tuesday, but at the last minute accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty.
The Racine County District Attorney’s Office held up its end of a plea bargain: It recommended only a fine and that the four felony counts of election fraud and four felony counts of misconduct in public office be reduced to one count of misdemeanor party to a crime of falsifying voter registration applications.

The goal is to suppress voters who the challenge is sent to.
The percent of people successfully callenged is irrelevant although it helps eliminate some democrat voters.
Thus, if they succeed in knocking out three percent of voters in a challenge, they may convince 10 percent not to even send their ballot in. Winning the actual challenge is secondary
That’s why we see the challenges being sent in late, right before the votes are to be sent in.
Here’s the real question : Of the 1900 + voters challengedm what was their voting rate v the voting rate of the rest of King County. That’s where we would see whether the tactic is paying off or not. With Maleng in office and giving a free pass to any challengers, look to see a broad scale challenge in 2006.

This would surely keep so many right wing idiots home that we’d win it all. Sounds like the right way to go to me. We then find Dems in every state to take the same approach, finding their own heavily republican districts and challenge to the point that they can’t win.

Aha, so the Ohio GOP was actually following the BIAW playbook from last year’s recount. The cross-fertilization of voter suppression methodology goes both ways, it seems. Next time, they’ll try the Sotelo method, particularly if it’s true that Ohio doesn’t even have something on the books about showing an actual address for the challenged voter.
Erik:
Here’s the real question : Of the 1900 + voters challengedm what was their voting rate v the voting rate of the rest of King County. That’s where we would see whether the tactic is paying off or not. King County’s official 2005 results show a turnout of 53.88%. If the 1855 unduplicated voters in Sotelo’s list had voted at that rate, 999 of them would have cast ballots on November 8. As it turns out, the Canvassing Board considered only 190 challenges … that’s how many of the challenged voters tried to vote. That’s a mere 10.24% turnout for the group. Even if you assume that all of the “rescinded” challenges (what was it, 75 or so?) actually ended up voting, the turnout in this collection of King County voters was abysmal.
Voter suppression? You betcha!

2,491 absentee ballots were rejected because of signature mismatch. Another 167 absentee ballots were rejected because Dean Logan lost their voter registration applications and didn’t have any signature on file to compare with.
This is a lot higher rejection rate than November 2004, when only 995 absentee ballots in King County were rejected for either signature mismatch or Dean Logan misplacing their file signatures. And there were a lot fewer absentee votes cast this year than there were last year.
DEMOCRATS DON’T REALLY STAND FOR “COUNT EVERY VOTE”.
Democrats only care about counting every vote in two situations:
(1) If the election is close and the Democrat needs to catch up — such as the Gregoire/Rossi contest.
(2) If they can embarass the Republicans — such as trying to defeat Lori Sotelo’s registration challenges.

However, they need to work to clean the voting registrations of other counties. Otherwise, all of the pro-rossi counties are going to run as usual while KC is going to have to run on a parred down voting list.

It really doesn’t matter how many or few you post, if the only point you are trying to make is that there is corruption among Democrat ranks as well — that much is well known. As an argument it neither refutes nor argues the central point being made, which is that there is wide-scale corruption in the GOP. Now, if you’re willing to concede that point, and are putting forward evidence of Democratic corruption, then perhaps you’re making another argument entirely: that there is wide-scale corruption in the American political system. That’s what I’m trying to clear up.
Calling your argument a straw man does not deny the accuracy or seriousness of the evidence you’re bringing forward, by the way. If, however, you go through the archives of this blog, you’ll find page after page of essentially the same argument: “the Dems did it too” — again, the straw man, unless of course the implication is that somehow one wrong validates another, which also illogical.
Although I would agree that Americans need to awaken to the corruption present within their political system (which is at least half the argument you seem to be making), I think that the discourse on this matter needs to be prioritized: the GOP controls all three branches of government, has brooked little if any dissent in the past 5 years, is well on the way to bankrupting this country, started an illegal war on false premises, and has shown itself to behave, generally speaking, in grossly unethical ways. Since the GOP has so much power, it appears to me to be the cancer that has metastasized the worst and is therefore the first one that needs to be excised.

The Dems control all three branches of government in Washington State, has brooked little if any dissent in the past 20 years, is well on the way to bankrupting this state, moonbats in Olympia have attacked the Port of Olympia destroying taxpayer owned property, because a military ship was in port, the moonbat controlled city council in Olympia passed an ordinance making Olympia a nuclear free zone and has shown itself to behave, generally speaking, in grossly unethical ways. The Democratic city council has ignored bums, drug addicts and crazed Evergreen College students while they tore up the city, had sex in the streets, mud wrestling in the streets, stopped all traffic in the city for hours, all in the name of May Day! Every day shop owners are picking up human feces and used needles outside of their stores in Olympia and then those brilliant dems on the council want to know why businesses are moving to Tumwater and Lacey. Since the Dems have so much power here in Washington State, it appears to me to be the cancer that has sold brains, used minor girls in lockup as sex toys to keep the males in lockup satisfied while guards look the other way, can’t count ballots from ordinary people, but allow the dead, the felons, and the unregistered people’s ballots to count, should be the first priority to be tossed out of power on right on their corrupt self-righteous butts.

Joseph Lieberman is reminding Bush administration critics that it’s wrong to claim that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. attacked in 2003. {Er, Hillary…….Is he allowed to say this?? hehe]
For the Clueless spews:
You cannot register to vote from a PO Box, Ms. Sotelo was in her rights to file these challenges, and Logan in isnvoled with yet another voter fraud cover up.
More right-wing bullshit. The voter rolls were available for scrutiny weeks before they were “frozen”. The proper time for the R’s to point out irregularities was then and not just days before an election.
NO evidence of double voting or phantom voting has been found. (For which there are severe penalties, by the way.) When a person puts their true address on the registration form it becomes public record – just go over to soundpolitics.com and you can look up a voter’s address. This is stalker bait. Privacy concerns were probably a prime motivator behind PO Box registration.
Play nice wingnuts. If you’re civil and you drop your wingnuttery and reject the Rove playbook your candidates might win an election or two.

And that makes breaking the law OK? There is a LEGAL way to keep the address confidential.

No reasonable person could ever determine if the subject voters are real, or if they are regisetered multiple times using different names and PO Boxes.
sgmmac spews:
For the Clueless, you are probably correct with the Rock Stars, if you read SP, then you probably know that Chris Cornell also is registered illegally. How many people who are cheating have PO Boxes? How many snow birds or X residents maintain a PO Box. You can keep a PO Box for years while living in another state, all you need is a forwarding mail request and a check every year.

Don’t you love the drivel these donks spew. You never heard from them when the “criminal & Chief” (Clinton) was in power, but if one of Bush’s aids jaywalk they are all over it.
That’s a good one. HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER DeLay illegally funnels money to Texas candidtes to increase GOP power in the House–that’s “jaywalking” (we haven’t even gotten to the redistricting issues yet: violating the Civil Rights Act and using Department of Homeland Security assets for political stunts)
Oh, and HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER DeLay accepts Abramoff bribes before shepherding through legislation for the bribers…hmmm
Jack Abramoff (bank fraud) the bagman bribing Congressmen–wait ’til he flips for Fitzgerald: Ney and several other GOP senators will go down and who knows who else (Pretty sure DeLay goes down with them too)?
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER Frist and his lying (“to the American people”–isn’t that supposed to be bad?) and insider trading. He might beat this rap.
Cunningham pled guilty to taking bribes–wait ’til his co-conspirators get done singing about who else they put the touch on…there’s also a DoD scandal in the making here
Rep. John Doolittle took hundreds of thousands from Abramoff and his gang to block casino competition for Abramoff’s indian tribe clients
Abramoff’s buddy Michael Scanlon pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and is “cooperating” with prosecutors–the indictments of the bribed (Reps and Senators) are coming…
Seems like an awful lot of Republicans like to cross against the light.
Name a current Democrat.

Wow, I guess all this chicanery explains why Sotelo was so heavily interested in areas of Dem-concentration. After all, Jim Miller the DVF guru says Dems do it more.
What’s that? More? Does that mean Republicans do it as well?
Play nice wingnuts. File your objections in the weeks before the voter list is frozen.

“12 million blacks in the US………16 million black Democrat votes!! No problem here!!! [hehe]”
Now for the facts:
“According to 2003 U.S. Census figures, some 37.1 million African Americans live in the United States, comprising 12.9 percent of the total population.”

“you should know that all of those machines in King County called Accu-Vue, they are made by Diebold, which may mean diabotical”
You may be onto something there, Mac.
“The Diebold optical scan system uses a dangerous programming
methodology, with an executable program living inside the electronic ballot box. … The Black Box Voting team proved that the Diebold optical scan program, housed on a chip inside the voting machine, places a call to a program living in the removable memory card during the election. The demonstration also showed that the executable program on the memory card
(ballot box) can easily be changed, and that checks and balances,
required by FEC standards to catch unauthorized changes, were not
implemented by Diebold — yet the system was certified anyway.
The Diebold system in Leon County, Florida succumbed to multiple
attacks.”

My understanding is King County uses the same equipment as Leon County.

I was just trying to convince headless lucy that he should go on a late night mission and take out all of the voting machines in KCRE. He wants a plan for 06 to take them out and wonders if he spits coke on them will they crash! He claims to have never seen a “Diebold” machine, so I told him that all of the Accu-Vue machines in KCRE are indeed those diabolitcal Diebold machines.

Lucy, whatever kind of drugs you are smoking, you should be ashamed of yourself for not offering to share! You do really believe that King County hand counts over a million ballots several times during each election? The Accu-Vue machines that you put your little optical scan ballot into are processed in a Diabold machine. When you send in an absentee ballot, the workers put your little optical scan ballot into a Diabold machine to count it.

I truly must be stuck on stupid to attempt communication with Lucy.
