Down here in Vancouver, the community is responding to last weekend’s racist graffiti. For instance:
Other community leaders have publicly denounced the incident. Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas issued a statement this week saying, “these recent criminal acts are reprehensible and this sort of conduct should not be tolerated.”
Still not sure why efforts to do something positive about this rotten little graffiti attack seem to make some folks so upset. No, it won’t change the entire universe forever, but it might let the 16 year old kid (and many of her neighbors who were also victimized) who had her name and vile epithets and swastikas sprayed on the street know that folks care what happened and will do what they can.
Evil and good men doing nothing and all that sort of business, you know?
UPDATE—Courtesy of the rabbit in comments, it seems there has been a similar incident in Everett.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover says at least five vehicles were found early Friday with painted messages; several were painted with racial slurs.
At least two vehicle owners are minorities.
The Seattle Times reports this morning that a similar crime was committed in Everett. Police found racist graffiti spray-painted on 5 cars. I wonder if a skinhead gang is traveling up and down the I-5 corridor?

Rightwing Coup In Honduras
We wake up this morning to find out the elected pro-peasant president of Honduras has been overthrown and packed off to Costa Rica by soldiers after he sacked the country’s top general.
In South America, where most people are dirt poor, the ruling elites just can’t stand the idea of the hungry being fed. This is Honduras’ third military coup since the Nixon days.
In our own country, guess which political party undermines South American democracies and funnels arms to that unhappy continent’s rightwing thugs, torturers, slave traffickers, and dictators?

No, I didn’t make that up. This is the headline on the lede story in the Seattle Times this morning.
This isn’t another article about people without medical insurance. It’s about people with medical insurance going broke.
The article says in 2007 nearly 2/3rds of all personal bankruptcies in the U.S. were linked to “illnesses, loss of income or high medical bills,” and over 3/4ths of those debtors had medical insurance when they got sick.
“What’s more,” the Times says, “even insured people without serious health problems … are struggling” with high deductibles and copays that are “eroding the value of employer-provided insurance” even as employers struggle with higher costs for employee coverage.
All across America, people who thought they were insured are losing their homes, retirements, and life savings when they have a serious illness and coverage loopholes or caps prove financially devastating. Almost no one is safe. That more than anything else, the Times says, is what’s driving broad public support for health care reform.
Two things are clear about health insurance in the U.S.: That the system is broken and getting worse every year, and that conservatives are opposed to any change that would benefit ordinary hard-working Americans.
Conservatives are fucking misanthropes. That’s gotta be it, they simply hate people, and they enjoy watching human beings suffer. I wouldn’t be surprised if they rip wings off monarch butterflies for sport, too.

You left out the details behind his overthrow. His term is up in January, and he can’t run again according to the constitution, but he was finagling to have that changed so he could be president some more.
If Bush was close to changing things so he could have a 3rd, 4th, and maybe 5th term, would you want him overthrown?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying President Zelaya is any kind of a prize package; his more charitable critics call him a “bungler” and an “opportunist without a coherent ideology.” Honduras may well be better off without him. But that’s for Honduran voters to decide, at $26 per vote,* not some strongarm general and cabal of colonels.

They never pay for anything with their own money, they always spend other people’s money, whenever possible. Gov. Sanford, for example, used taxpayer money instead of his own money to fly to Argentina for nookie visits. Watch any late-night get-rich-quick infomercial and you’ll hear a promoter expounding on the art of gambling with “other people’s money” to flip houses or penny stocks.
Of course, the granddaddy of all Republican cheapness is wages. There’s even a name for it: Cheap labor conservatives. These folks will literally go to the ends of the earth to pay as little for labor as possible. They want you to work for free, or as nearly free as they can make people work. You get all the work and they get all the money, that’s the kind of world they want to live in.
They also want workers to pay all the taxes. They think inheritances, corporate profits, capital gains, dividends, interest, and rents shouldn’t be taxed at all. But they have no qualms about taxing the shit out of wages. After three decades of Republican dominance of our government, wages are taxed at three times the rate as capital gains and dividends. It would have been even more if they could have gotten away with it. And, of course, the rich get all the deductions (e.g., business jets and hunting lodges) while their workers can’t even deduct bus fare.
You can beat them at their own game, though. Don’t work! I don’t; and won’t, until workers get a bigger share of the GDP and a smaller share of the taxes. But that’ll never happen, so I’ll never work again. That suits me just fine! I’m a capitalist now, and get paid for not working! And I pay much lower taxes flipping stocks than I would flipping burgers. Screw that! If some Republican asshole needs burgers flipped, he can flip them himself! I won’t do it for what cheap labor conservatives want to pay which is nothing. Why should I? I don’t need the money. I have money. I get all the money I truly need without working for it. So why should I work? Why does anyone work under a system like this?
