Dino Rossi is getting a lot of media mileage out of his “the President wouldn’t be coming here if Patty Murray wasn’t in trouble” meme, mostly because our media is so heavily invested in this being a close race. So it’ll be interesting to see, when Murray ends up winning by about the same margin as Gov. Gregoire did in 2008, how the media ultimately explains her relatively comfortable victory.
What’s also funny about this meme is that you can be damn sure that the President would have been out here campaigning for Rossi, had John McCain won the 2008 presidential election. Only difference is, rather than a public rally of a couple ten thousand all-comers, McCain’s visit would have been just like all the other Beltway and Wall Street insiders who have come out here to campaign for Rossi: a high-donor, carefully screened fundraising event, held exclusively behind closed doors.

Pyrite…
All the Senators shown in this video beat an incumbent/entrenched Democrat to get there seat.
Another good omen for Rossi!
Roger Rabbit spews:
@1 A vote for Rossi is a vote for the bankers. Your move.
lostinaseaofblue spews:
This close to an election which will certainly result in diminished Democrat power why would Obama spend time here if he didn’t think it critical? The House is not seriously in question. Even Democrats concede it likely to be controlled by Republicans in January.
The extent to which the Senate shifts is at question. 2 weeks from that kind of election, you really think Obama would be here if Murrays’ seat were thought safe?
Glenno spews:
#2
You need to remember Murray was the one who billed out the bankers. I bet she even wrote that bill also!
Geoduck spews:
McCain would have keeled over by now, and who knows what President Palin would do.
Plus, of course, we’d be at war with Iran.

Glenno @1:
I’ll give you Thune, who defeated Tom Daschle. But both Brown and Johanns were running for open seats.
OK, technically, Paul Kirk occupied the MA seat, but he was appointed specifically to be replaced in the special election. Only in the sense that the late, deeply lamented Edward Kennedy had been buried was anyone “entrenched” in that election.
As for Johanns, not only was the seat open … the retiring incumbent was Republican Chuck Heagel.
Glenno spews:
Come on…you got to give it the Truck Man to beat an entrench St Aty Gen…It was Kennedy’s seat for 40 years till Scott Brown gave it back to the people.
Rossi will win Murray’s seat and give back to the people of Washington instead of the loybists and bankers who are supporting Murray.

Right Stuff spews:
Damn that comment got all whacked up.
Don’t know what happened
Mary Plante spews:
In November after Rossi’s third loss, we will be talking about what a mistake it was for the perrenial candidate to jump into this race.

if Rossi loses and it’s as close as it appears to be, he will run against Cantwell in 2012.
Rujax! spews:
@12….
…and lose NUMBER FOUR, dipstick???
Don’t drink all your vodka now, dude…it’s a long weekend.
Right Stuff spews:
@11 Cyn
C’mon now?
Right or wrong, show a little respect.
They don’t make em like Roger Rabbit any more!
@12
No, he won’t.
Michael spews:
Well at least Dino doesn’t kick children in the face. That’s a start anyway.

Hey Goldy,
Dave Reichert’s Brain was more than just a good piece of writing for you, it was a fine piece of writing for anyone. Good job.
notaboomer spews:
not sure why i bother, but
At the Foss home, a friendly crowd of about 40 people sat in lawn chairs on a damp lawn and served up softball questions allowing Obama to riff on the merits of his administration for an hour. . .
After the hourlong chat, Obama headlined the rally at the UW, where he and Murray were frequently interrupted by loud cheers and chants of “Yes We Can!”
ok so not a fundraiser at a waterfront mansion but really what’s the difference? no real discussion of issues, no real questions about policy. just choreographed horserace bullshit.
