I enjoyed decent Internet access on the airplane of all places, but here at the Rio, crushed under the weight of a couple thousand bloggers, the Intertubes are proving as sclerotic as Dick Cheney’s arteries. Even AT&T’s 3G network has slowed to a crawl, so I’m not even sure that this small post from my iPhone will get through.
Anyway, just thought I’d give you a heads up in case you don’t here hear much from me.

That reminds me of an event I attended in the Kingdome (a convention of sorts), just as cell phone use became widespread.
Every goup seemed to have the same instruction: “First one there, grab some good seats and then call the others and tell us where to find you”. But as everyone was arriving, you had thousands of people on their cell phones, all trying to call each other to say “where are you? I can’t find you?”
Apparently the cell phone tower serving downtown Seattle couldn’t handle the traffic, and crashed. They got it back up just as everyone was leaving, and they all tried to call home to say they were on the road… and the system crashed again.
Funny thing is, we never seem to learn from these examples. In the old days, we made plans in advance and had to find ways to stick to them. Now my daughter’s plans regularly include “call me and let me know when you get there and tell me how to meet you”, which doesn’t take into account dead phone batteries, dropped signals, misplaced phones, phones accidently on silent mode (“why didn’t you call me??? Oh, you did??? Oh, I see your two voice mails and six text messages now…”)

Last night I watched some recorded talks from the 2009 Netroots Nation.
Darcy Burner gave the closing keynote.
I never was that huge a supporter of hers even though I gave money to her campaigns. I thought her impromptu manner worked against her and even though she was leagues smarter and more capable than Dim Dave, the 8th was just too full of right wing, Limbaugh-worshiping crapheads to elect someone like her.
But her closing keynote at NN09 just made me go wow!
I hope she can one day serve as a legislator one of these days. But she’s doing important work as it is right now.
Highly recommended:

You can skip ahead to the one hour mark but Markos Moulitsas gives a pretty good introduction a few minutes before that.

Thom Hartmann was asked today if Andrew Brightbart was part of the media.
Thom answered: “no, he is not part of the media, he is just a blogger”
