I’m approximately the billionth person to mourn the hiatus of Capitol Hill Seattle. If there are 2 things they did well, it’s great hyper local news and paying their writers.

Here’s hoping for an eventual return.

It’s a tough choice between paying more for your hip joint dinners on CH and paying for your local news source.

Or maybe the problem for CHS is that it’s not really that tough a choice.

It’s not about the advertisers. It’s about the ratings. Those are the numbers you should be watching.

Trump wasn’t a saint, either. His ratings amongst his supporters were still enough to beat #CrookedHillary.

Do you think that O’Reilly supporters will abandon him? If not, he stays. Because his advertisers will return. Because they want to advertise to his supporters.

How would you expect sister-fucking hillbillies to respond, in other words.

It’s been claimed here in these threads that the biggest is the best. FACT! If that’s the case, NYC is only the 23rd best city in the world, beaten for the title of “the best” by the likes of Lima, Cairo, Delhi, Mexico City, Moscow, Lagos, Karachi, Istanbul, Jakarta and Shanghai.

Ya can’t be the biggest if everyone wants to get the hell out.

Census numbers confirm that more people have fled NYC in recent years than any other US city.

In other words, more people have been considering leaving New York, then meditating on it for a bit ‘til it feels good in their hearts and then doing what feels right, perhaps returning only to realize it’s good that they left. Gothamist points to US Census records, which “show that over 1 million people have abandoned the New York area since 2010, opting to forgo our high tax rates and rampant political corruption in favor of Florida’s sinkholes and whatever’s in Texas.”

No ratings won’t help. The show has to make money and being #1 in your time slot doesn’t make money if they can’t sell the commercial space.

But strong ratings are proof of something. Right Wingers really don’t care about moral values as surely as water is wet.

How can there be restaurants on Capitol Hill? Capitol Hill is here in Seattle, which has a high minimum wage, and I distinctly recall opponents of the minimum wage telling us very, very sternly that raising our minimum wage would drive restaurants (and other small businesses) to close.

Why, it’s almost as if opponents of the minimum wage don’t know jack about economics.

Not for any political reasons but this is going to go down as one of the worst ads ever. What is it saying. The world will be more woke if everyone has a Pepsi?

Yes, Gonzaga is the class of a shitty league and gets said shitty league’s automatic bid. But then they are 24-19 all time in the tournament. Of those 19 straight years they’ve had 4 first round exits and 8 second rounds. So 63% of the time the mighty ZAGS aren’t playing after the first weekend.

One Final Four appearance in school history. Look out, there’s a dynasty blooming!

    55% Tournament win rate.

My team has a .770 tournament win percentage. My team has more NCAA Basketball championships than any school. When my school wins a conference championship the banner goes in the practice gym. Only National Titles hang from the arena ceiling.

My Alma Mater has more NCAA Championships in all D1 sports than any other school in the country. They have seven Nobel Laureates currently on faculty and fifteen Nobel Laureates among alumni and faculty.

When we were picking teams for tackle football on my block, each time we offered an automatic spot on the team to one of the Catholic kids down the street. For 19 weeks in a row the biggest of the McMullen clan got picked to play, usually last or next-to-last pick.

Most times, one or two plays in he would leave with a bloody nose or a skinned knee. But there was this one game when he nearly scored. Fumbled at the 5-yard line. And then cried. Like a tall Joey Cora.

International travel to the US dropped 6.5 per cent in the eight days following the president’s proposed travel ban on January 27 when compared to the same period in 2016,
    …
The UK is no exception to this trend. Since Donald Trump took office, almost a third (29 per cent) of Britons said they have been put off holidaying in America and flight searches to the US have dropped overall by 13 per cent, according to a poll by flight comparison site Cheapflights.co.uk.

These findings were backed up at the end of February by online booking agent Kayak.co.uk, which found that UK flight searches to Miami – the second most popular US city for overseas visitors – had “fallen off a cliff”. Search was down 52 per cent compared to last year.

Unless all those guys are the mechanical engineers fixing it not sure what they could have been doing to speed it along.

True story. I was sent to Orlando early in my career to sit with and shoot a fairly well known person for the Additional Features commentary for a deluxe Pixar box set of one of their pretty well known features. I flew in on Friday night and due to the talent’s schedule I was to just roll on him talking and ad libbing about the movie while he watched it on Saturday, have Sunday off and shoot again on Monday afternoon. Friday evening when I checked into the hotel there was a message waiting for me that the talent I was to work with had broken his leg that afternoon and the whole thing was off for at least four weeks when they would try to get him to me back in L.A.

I could have spent my time rolling my camera on nothing in the studio which is what I was paid to do. Instead I OUTRAAAAAAAAGEOUSLY went to Epcot, the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios while Disney paid me. I could have flown home too and they still would have paid me.

The Trump administration’s internal conflicts exploded onto the front pages again this morning, when the New York Times reported that a battle royale is raging between the globalists, led by son-in-law Jared Kushner, and the nationalists, led by Steve Bannon, who was just deposed from the NSC. Not only that, but the Ryan wing of the GOP wants to scapegoat Bannon for the stumbling failures of Trumps first two months.

This story is highly significant, not only because it emphasizes the deep splits within the GOP — which were inevitable, because Trump is not a cookie-cutter Republican, and departs from GOP orthodoxy in many ways — but more importantly, because it could determine whether Trump engages with the world or pursues isolation policies for the rest of his term (however long or short that may be).

For Trump, it’s not a simple matter of resetting his presidency, because if he shunts aside Bannon and the nationalist sentiments he espouses, he abandons much of the base that elected him. But if he doesn’t, he will be splitting with his closest and most trusted advisers — his daughter Ivanka and her husband Kushner, not to mention the most influential wing of the Republican Party.

that’s putting it mildly. Bob Quist is being fucked by DLC robots while he’s busy rebuilding the grassroots. People inside the beltway do not understand places like Montana. They see 56 counties “dominated” by Republicans. Well, some of those counties have fewer registered voters than sheep. The political strength of Montana lies in it’s cities which are dominated by land grant universities, a younger population, above average education, above average incomes, government employees, and yes, ultimately politically more progressive voters. If Quist and his supporters succeed without the DCCC they won’t forget it. That’s not good party building.

@118 Fine with me. But from what CNN reports, Trump went after the airplanes that dropped the weapons, and the attacks are over for now. That seems pretty limp-wristed to me. He should shove a cruise missile up Assad’s ass. I don’t think the Russians are going to be particularly happy with the American attack on Syria. They want to have Syria as a puppet state, and if America is blowing up Syria, the Russians don’t have the wealth and logistics chain to re-supply Syria. After all, the USSR lost the Cold War because it simply couldn’t keep up with the spending the Americans were doing.

@119 Republicans are guilty of being Republicans. So what does that entail? Well, for one thing, putting stupidity on a pedestal and worshipping it. Like the Pennsylvania state senator who gives speeches arguing that climate change is caused by more humans giving off more body heat. In fact, saying something intelligent is grounds for getting kicked out of the GOP. So, even if you’re not terminally stupid, to be a Republican, you have to pretend you are. You also have to be willing to kick the poor, for example by voting against subsidized school lunches, Meals on Wheels, and voting for making it a crime to give a sandwich to a homeless person. And you have to become expert at the art of cavilling, which is essential for preventing social progress from occurring and making sure nothing good ever happens in society. You have to vote for things like designating gun permits as valid voter ID, but state university student photo ID cards are not, because, you know, you want gun nuts to vote and you don’t want educated young people to vote. And, of course, to be a Republican you must interfere with a woman’s right to choose whether to have an unwanted or deformed or rapist’s baby, and then vote against any public support for foster care, child care, food assistance, or anything else that would help that woman support and raise that child after you’ve forced her to bring it into the world. And, of course, you also have to be against paying any taxes to educate that kid so he can get a decent job when he grows up. And you have to be in favor of executing possibly innocent people instead of looking at the evidence that suggests the criminal justice system made a mistake, and you have to be against reforming police departments full of crooked, corrupt, racist, and violent cops. Also, not to be overlooked, to be a Republican you have to be a bloodthirsty warmonger, and a shameless hypocrite. In other words, being guilty of being a Republican marks you as a pretty awful person. And if somebody votes for Republicans, that makes them a Republican, and you don’t need no frikken due process or trial to prove they’re a Republican, because just being a Republican proves it.

@120 “For the record, my opinion is that Mayor Murray is being subjected to a shake-down – somebody’s looking for $$$, and that’s it.”

In other words, you believe the Seattle Times is venal enough to run a front-page story that essentially destroys Murray’s reputation based on nothing more than a shakedown artist’s say-so.

And you also believe that some attorney filed a lawsuit accusing a prominent and powerful public figure of being a pedophile in complete disregard of the ethics rule requiring attorneys to investigate the factual basis for a lawsuit before filing same, and without giving a thought to her exposure under Rule 11 for filing a baseless lawsuit.

Yes, these professional journalists and lawyer(s) just decided to play an extortion game with Murray, never mind that could get them lengthy prison sentences.

@133 Well, yes, that thought occurred to me too. The worst thing Assad or any other tinpot ruler could do to America is turn Trump into a war president. Remember all the evil that flowed from Osama bin Laden turning a guy who reads “My Pet Goat” upside down into a war president? We were stuck with him for eight years.

Which leads me to wonder this: I wonder if Putin put Assad up to it? Maybe even paid him a lot of money, and promised him a first-rate dacha on the Black Sea if things go south and he has to go into exile? We already know Putin went to a fair amount of trouble and expense to get Trump his first term. How much more effort does it take to persuade Assad to kill some babies with nerve gas to ensure that Trump gets a second term, too?

And let’s say Assad did get rid of his chemical weapons when Obama told him to. Who would be in a position to reach at a shelf and ship him fresh supplies of nerve gas? For that matter, who might provide Russian rebels fighting in eastern Ukraine with missiles capable of knocking down a civilian airliner flying at altitude? Whoooo could that be? Hmmm??

    War president, indeed.

Did Obama ask Putin’s permission to fly American reconnaissance planes off his coastline, or ask China’s permission to sail American battle fleets through the South China Sea?
