No angry sign-waving white people, so we’ll see if the media gives the rally the coverage it deserves.

Not trying to be snide. I gave up on all demonstrations in early 1969.
My total lack of ethics, morality or respect for “the law” tells me that the energy and enthusiasm of the concerned citizens would be better served by donating to an investigation fund to hire private detectives, auditors and concerned citizens to find blackmail material on any elected officials that oppose immigration reforms.
There is not a single person that is in national politics that does not have skeletons in the closet.
That is their Achilles heel. Stop being principaled and foolish. Go for the jugular.
If you have morals, ethics or any irrational belief in the laws, find out what a few of the more prominent anti immigration foes have done and file lawsuits to try and imprison them. That will get their colleagues to back down instantly.
I marched, signed petitions for 2 to 3 years and wound up walking through a rice paddy in Vietnam.
Demonstrations are strictly a “feel good” exercise that have absolutely no effect.
Personally, I don’t know why anyone would want this administration and Congress to “reform” immigration law. To judge from the health insurance plan, the only people it will turn out to be good for will be rich white men.
We have such a mess with things now on the immigration front that I’d like it if we were to halt all immigration for a while, say 20 years or so. Let’s get the illegals taken care of, then we can start looking into letting others into the country. At over 300 million, Id say the gene pool is in no danger of depletion!

Good idea! Do you think we could fly into the countries to where illegals are coming from and then fly them to Canada? I don’t know if the Canadians would put up with it for very long.

when they write the story of the decline of America they’ll write about how instead of employing our poor black minority we instead put them on welfare and imported mexicans to do the work. We then even let them import their poverty, teen pregnancy and other social ills, then create a 2nd national language (when that has crippled other countries), and now want to have the 49% of us paying the income taxes to pay for them to live here

The decline of America will occur only if people like you are in charge. The decline that has occurred over the past 40 years or so is highly attributable to conservatives believing that this country can somehow avoid universal demographic changes, maintain values that were never our values, and resist all outside forces and influences. Good luck with that.
Canada seems to be doing just fine with two national languages. Switzerland does just fine with four.

Belgium has 2 and about at war w/ each other. Canada has had lots of trouble, almost losing Quebec. Yes, Switz has 4 languages, but keeps the peace by significant canton control, small fed govt, respect for the language regions. I guess we could emulate and draw the mexican/cuban line at about Calif to texas to florida, but then what would we do w/ the 10 mm north of that line?

The issue isn’t being monolithic white, but rather to avoid having a Balkanized country w/ distinct ethnic areas and boundaries. Come to me with Chinese and Indian immigrants; they assimilate in 1 generation. But when you flood this country w/ record numbers of Hispanics, you then create a region where its more Mexico than the US. I think the US is special when its the US, not some La Raza outpost north of the Rio Grande.

We are not going to become “Balkanized” here in the US of A. Ain’t gonna happen. We don’t have ethnic/language divisions of that sort. I suspect that you, like me, are white, Protestant, heterosexual, and otherwise not excluded, so why are you so scared?
I think what #17 fears is that increasing Latino immigration will eventually lead to one of the Right’s favorite boogeymen, the effort to create a new nation called Aztlan out of the American Southwest. Living in Reno, I met lots of Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Hondurans, etc. They came to America to become Americans and live the American Dream, not to leave a Third World nation in order to create a new Third World nation.
The problem with the steady stream of Latino immigration is that it just isn’t ending. This does tend to cloud the fact that Latino kids born here are blending in with the mainstream of American society, and enriching it with the culture they came from. And their children will be like the Japanese and Chinese kids I played with when I was a second-grader at Wing Luke Elementary – didn’t necessarily look like me, but still all Americans.
By the way, Canada’s never really come that close to losing Quebec. And thanks for bringing up Belgium and blowing that out of proportion as well. True, the Dutch- and French-speaking gov’t there has nearly fallen apart, but the last violence I saw in Belgium was when they filmed In Bruges.

Uh, the US part of the SW was never Spanish or “Mexican” until after cortez (i’m not sure when they first headed north across the rio grande). and just like other countries where wars formed borders….in this continent….we displaced Indians with Europeans. We damn near cried. Instead we swore. That … thing, I said, that piece of shit, that ….. At which point the Aztec’s proud owner walked up behind the car as I was swearing at it from the front. He didn’t hear me. Assumed that my buddy and I, staring at his car, were as awestruck as he was.
