Over on Slog, Paul Constant remarks on how sadly difficult it is for conservative critics like the execrable Jonah Goldberg to put politics aside and just enjoy Star Trek for what is, and it reminded me of my only real conversation with Michael Medved.
We were chatting about holiday films, and while we both agreed that it was beautifully animated, it turns out we equally hated the film Happy Feet. Medved, who of course originally made his name as a movie reviewer, went on and on about the film’s preachy, environmental message, complaining about the unproven science of global warming, and how the movie distorted facts to its young audience. I, who made my name as a political crackpot, complained about the movie’s boring, meandering, and disjointed script.
It turns out that Medved hated Happy Feet because of its message, while I just hated it because it was a crappy movie. Huh.
Medved is just another tool who conveniently dodged the Vietnam War in the 60’s and then became a war hawk when he was too old to serve.
FUCK HIM!! Just like Flush Limbaugh.
Funny part is, he complains about the “unproven science of global warming” and yet has ZERO problems devoting a major portion of his life to the scientifically unproven existence of God.
Can anyone who doesn’t believe in the science of global warming scientifically prove the existence of God?
Well of course he couldn’t complain about not liking because it’s a crappy movie. He didn’t ‘make his bones’ as just another reviewer, but as the guy who invented The Golden Turkeys. If he hated bad, boring movies, he couldn’t have sat through so many of them. Perhaps that’s why he can sit through his own radio programs every night.
Some people just have to politicize everything.
Today’s conservatives politicize everything. Every event that occurs, no matter how remote it would seem from the political field, can be viewed from a partisan perspective if your mind works like that of Puddy, Cynical, or Little Ricky D.

I used to listen to ‘winger radio, and in particular to KVI, in the early 90’s. This was partly because my job had me driving between here and Portland a fair amount, and I needed something to jar my senses enough to keep me awake during the trip. During that time, Medved morphed from someone who at times nearly sounded reasonable into a screechy protofascist drone.

A good movie for republicans?
The NR recently went through a list of “good republican” movies…..their criteria were that the moives had to have some type of “American values”.
What a joke!
Here are the top 6:
1. The Lives of Others (2007) – I’ve never seen it but it is about government surveillance – from the same people who brought you illegal wiretapping and torture.
2. The Incredibles (2004) – Excuse me – a funny little kids pic – but number 2 movie of all time for conservatives? Wow, the barrel is not too big is it? And it is republican because….family values? People who are different?
3. Metropolitan (1990) – Never seen it. Not supposed to be that good.
4. Forrest Gump (1994) – Contrived, but well acted. So what?
5. 300 (2007) – Why? Why is this the 5th best conservative film? The orignal film was much better.
6. Groundhog Day (1993) – Again, what is conservative about this. This was an amusing film but not the 6th best in history.
What a sorry list. Not one of these would rate as a true classic film (like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, chinatown, Schindlers List or Lawrence of Arabia).
In a capitalist society a movie doesn’t have to be good; it only has to make money. A movie that sells tickets can be anything — boring, polemical, bombastic, absurd, awful … John Wayne’s The Green Berets proved that.

Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would want to watch this steaming piece of ostentatious crap. Yuppie brats talking endlessly about how superior they are to everyone else, oooh how fun! Maybe it was the mention of ‘socialism’? Perhaps the Wrong see it as a scathing expose of ‘librul elites’. Amazingly, Rotten Tomatoes rates it at 92%, pretty damn high for them.
