Looking for the silver lining in our nation’s worsening unemployment numbers?
Citing a decline in donations caused by the slowing economy, Focus on the Family, the Christian advocacy charity in Colorado Springs, has eliminated 202 staff positions — 149 of them filled, 53 that were already vacant.
On the downside, this surely means tough times ahead for Colorado Springs’ burgeoning meth-dealing male hooker industry.

I see no “upside” in people losing their jobs or charitable organizations hurting, especially in this economy.

1 Considering that FOTF has been, to say the least, anything but charitable to a great many people, it might be better if their employees were working at something else.

Now if we can only get rid of that America-hating traitor Dobson….

If we had no Christian charities left in America who would feed the poor?
Certainly not you folks.

My heart goes out to those so deluded as to think they had a future with a demagogue like Dobson.
Now they might have to learn to get a real job and work alongside some of the “unchurched”.
If they keep their whacked out convictions to themselves and do a good job they’ll be all right.

Adam @6,
Focus on the Family isn’t a “Christian charity” in the traditional sense. It’s an anti-gay, anti-secularist hate group.

9 – Good quote. Nate Silver is a rising star in progressive blogging. He’ll have to repurpose his site somewhat now that the election is over but maybe not – fivethirtyeight.com could just be the real clear politics for progressives.

The news is out that now that Bonneville has regained ownership of KIRO-AM, they’re going to devote its 50 kilowatts to sports. Apparently the reason is that the public now so equates AM radio with right-wing screech monkeys that anyone who wants to hear anything else listens to FM or Webcasting, or uses an iPod.

I think a lot of donations to politically directed “church” organizations have been steadily going down since 2006. A lot of Evangelicals were dissolussioned when they heard the revelations from the former White House “Faith Based Initiative” director. He pointed out that the White House was using the “Faith Based Initiatives” for partison political purposes, by funding projects in districts which would benefit Republican congressmen. He also recounted about how most of the Republicans laughed at the Evangelicals, considering them “useful rubes” who could be counted on for votes and money but were too stupid to realize that the Republicans were doing nothing significant except paying lip service towards their agenda.
In addition, it’s been clear that the church’s agenda hasn’t been very high on the agenda of the Republican party. Sure, they use it to whip up their base for fundraising and get-out-the-vote campaigns, but have they sacrified any REAL political capital to accomplish their goals? They had control of Congress for the better part of twelve years, and the White House for eight years, and seven of the nine Supreme Court justices were appointed by Republicans. Exactly what were they waiting on?
Sure, they try to blame it on “liberal judges”, and argue that Republicans need to be kept in office in perpetuity so they can appoint “conservative judges” with “Godly values”. But with effective control of the Supreme Court and many of the Courts of Appeals (especially the D.C. Circuit), what more could they want?
It’s getting a lot harder to get Evangelicals to contribute to conservative political causes now – and it’s not just the economy. But quite frankly, the Evangelicals across the country tend to be more blue-collar than white-collar workers, and they typically take the brunt of a declining economy before anybody else does. These groups are being hit twice – once by the economy, and once by the sea-change in political loyalties.
