Huh. So first the state Democratic Party schedules its presidential caucus on a Saturday, and now we learn the county conventions are scheduled for Passover. I’m loathe to attempt to speak for my fellow Jews, but… what are we…? Chopped liver?
On a side note, if you’re trying to make up your mind on whether to attend your county convention or your family seder, I’ve been to both. It might be hard to believe, but county conventions are even more tedious and more frustrating than even the longest Passover seder (think of the platform debate as the four hundred questions,) and the food isn’t nearly as good. Stick with the seder.

sin, the Christian sense, is not a Jewish idea. We do not even have a Heaven or Hell to worry about although some do.
The issue for Jews .. liberal and orthodox, is called mitvah and means something between good deed and law. One is supposed to do the right thing. So, this hurts where it matters, it hurts our ability to be good people!
Furthermore, this is NOT a matter of church and state. The Jewish concept of mitzvot is not dependent on God. It is closer to the founding principles of the US .. what Jefferson would have called natural law. In a sense this would be similar to scheduling a critical even on the 4th of July in some event in Canada where Americans were supposed ot participate.
Put another way, a Jew who drove to a caucus would by more concerned with breaking our laws than about retribution from the deity. Going to the caucus is a BIG mitzvah!
The Passover situation is in many ways the worse of the two. Passover is not just a holy day, it is Xmas, Easter and el Feytr .. all rolled into one with more than a bit of the 4th too! Iy is the day families gather from all over the world to celebrate …FREEDOM!! Many families, mine included, actually use a book that night that was written in honor of MLK!
I understand the County will try to move the dates.

It is a fact that picking any date/time will conflict wit some other event or obligation for at least some people. It not a metter of no conflict, it’s a matter of what conflict. I’ll admit that Passover is a big conflict for many and I guess it could have been picked for a weekend before or after. Oh, not after, that’s the day for LD caucuses.

I hope that the Jewish Community joins with the Dems as soon as possible to rectify this mistake.
As for the date, satuday is the issue. Am I correct that Christians would be upset with a Sunday afternoon/evening mtg?
rhp6033 spews:
Well, that’s a mistake I could have made. I’m just not up on the Hebrew calendar – I know that there’s some holiday around October only because of the Yom Kipper War, and Easter isn’t on the same date every year because it’s connected to Passover, but that’s about it.
But Separation of church and state has nothing to do with it. We wouldn’t schedule a primary or caucus on a Sunday because it would conflict with those wanting to go to Church, and especially not on Easter Sunday. Although keeping everybody happy may be near impossible, certainly this should have been changed the moment this conflict of dates was brought to the public’s attention.
(O/T Notes: The White House just admitted – under oath – that it erased the tapes for a five or six month period covering the invasion of Iraq and the outing of Valerie Plame, as “recycling of backup tapes” which was “consistent with best industry practices”. The White House was required by law to preserve those records, and now the original messages, and their backups, are deleted. No mention of why, if it was “best industry practices”, it only occured for that limited time frame. Seems the Bush administration needed to get rid of a lot more evidence than the 18 minutes which Nixon needed to erase.
SeattleJew spews:
@12 … is that your last name?
The issue with Passover is NOT religous and the issue with Shabat is probably beyond your understanding,
We, the Jews, are a people .., ya know, like the Lakota, the French, the Chinese?????
We have a religion that is tied tightly to us, but a lot of Judaism is not religious in the usual sense of that term. As one example, do you know who the Missippit three were? Three civil rights works, on a convert two born as Jews, were burned to death in Missisippi. In my hime,a nd many others, their deaths are remembered every Passover as part of the celebration of freedom. By the way, in our service we also honor the father of the labor unions … Sam Gompers as well as such universal figures as Gandhi and MLK.
THAT celebration is the one being demeaned here.

So much for the idea someone offered here recently about making Election Day a Saturday…
That the cacauses are held on a Saturday such that Jewish people are effectively substantially burdened is both distrespectful to them and, if you wish to make a case, arguably unlawful since the dispirate negative impact upon a specific group of people comes about because of their ethnicity and religous beliefs.
Whether Christians would complain about Sundays? We’re used to being disrespected what with kids sports and other activities on Sunday mornings.
This is what you get when you try to make participating in the process “easy and convenient.” Whatever happened to participating as a civic responsibility and a right secured and preserved by tens of thousands of American service men and women dating back to Bunker Hill who gave their last full measure of devotion so that we might be free?
Screw ease and convenience! If influencing who will be your candidate’s nominee for President is so unimportant that you can’t be bothered to come out on a weeknight to meet and debate with your neigbors on the issues and candidates of the day, then the case can be made that you have no business participating at all!
Will some not be able to come? Yes, but no system is perfect. But participatory democracy means just that: in order to have a democracy, you have to PARTICIPATE!
Still, to be so knuckleheaded as to go for offensive two-fer – Jewish sabbath and Passover – is too doofus for words. But, per @10…ewp… so typically Dwight Pelz!
Holding the county conventions on Passover eve is akin to holding them Christmas Eve. Even the little calendar I got free from a real estate agent I’ve never met noted that April 20th was Passover.
BTW…my party is not exempt from being similarly dense.
As an aside…I’ve never been but have always wanted to go to a Passover Seder…seriously.

How Romney Won Michigan
By promising jobs he can’t deliver.
http://www.time.com/time/polit.....84,00.html
http://www.newsweek.com/id/81826
The truth is, if jobs is YOUR issue, you should vote Democratic because Democrats ALWAYS do better at delivering jobs:
Jobs Records of Presidents
(new jobs as percentage of total workforce)
Democrat Roosevelt 5.3%
Democrat Johnson 3.8%
Democrat Carter 3.1%
Democrat Truman 2.5%
Democrat Clinton 2.4%
Democrat Kennedy 2.3%
Republican Nixon 2.2%
Republican Reagan 2.1%
Republican Coolidge 1.1%
Republican Ford 1.1%
Republican Eisenhower 0.9%
Republican Bush Sr. 0.6%
Republican Bush Jr. (0.7%) (through 2003)
Republican Hoover (9.0%)
Roger Rabbit spews:
Now let’s look at Monkeyface’s jobs record. According to the current issue of Barron’s, a conservative weekly investors’ magazine, 89% of the “new jobs” in 2007 resulted from a statistical adjustment — not real people working in actual jobs. If you subtract out that controversial math hocus-pocus, the economy lost jobs last year. As it has every year since Monkeyface stole the White House. Why? It’s obvious — Republicans just don’t care about workers. In fact, they like high unemployment because it gives bosses more power, weakens unions, and forces workers to accept lower pay.
Roger Rabbit spews:
So — Romney can promise jobs (that he can’t deliver) all he wants, but at the end of the day, people who want jobs will vote Democratic. In Romney’s case, the jobs talk is nothing but a hot air balloon, and voters will soon see through it. As the multimillionaire son of a multimillionaire who’s never had to worry about finding employment or putting food on the table, Romney knows nothing about workers or working, and this self-financed presidential campaign — who is a candidate only because of his inherited name and fat wallet — will deflate faster than last week’s helium birthday party balloon when voters figure out he wouldn’t know how to find a bus stop if one fell on him.

Democrats Pass Mine Safety Bill; Bush Threatens Veto
Republicans just don’t care about workers; they care only about profits — even if it’s blood money.
“(WASHINGTON) — Defying White House veto threats, the Democrat-controlled House on Wednesday passed sweeping mine safety legislation aimed at preventing future underground disasters like the one that took nine lives last year at Crandall Canyon mine in Utah. …
“‘Congress has been forced to act … because of the Bush administration’s total failure … to keep miners safe on the job,’ said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee. …
“The legislation would add safeguards to ‘retreat’ mining, … improve emergency response to mine sites … require … tracking technology, … [and require] operators … to reduce miners’ exposure to coal dust, which causes black-lung disease.
“The bill also would give the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration subpoena authority; increase penalties for safety violations; place it completely in control of a rescue site, … create an ombudsman’s office to handle miners’ safety complaints … [and] allow for independent investigations when more than one miner is killed in an accident.”
“‘We need to have a country and a government that values the lives of the miners as much as they value what they bring out of the ground,’ said Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky.
“The margin of victory in the House would not be enough to override the veto threatened Tuesday by the Bush administration.”

Why would any president veto this bill? Who could be against coal mine safety? American voters face a clear choice: Vote for responsibility, or vote for bullshit.
Roger Rabbit spews:
With Republicans in, all you get is bullshit. Therefore, what this country needs is not only a Democratic Congress, but a thorough housecleaning of Congress to further reduce the population of obstructionists, regressives, and troglodytes until Democrats have filibuster-proof majorities. Only then will the lives of American workers be safe.

Democrats Open Investigation of Jarvik Ads
“WASHINGTON — House Democrats are investigating whether consumers are being misled by advertisements for Lipitor …. In the ads, … Dr. Robert Jarvik talks about the benefits of … the world’s best-selling medication. Michigan Reps. John Dingell and Bart Stupak sent a letter to Pfizer Monday, questioning Jarvik’s credibility. ‘In the ads, Dr. Jarvik appears to be giving medical advice, but … he has never obtained a license to practice or prescribe medicine,’ the lawmakers state.”

According to Wikipedia, Jarvik received an M.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1976, but “did not complete an internship or residency and has never been licensed to practice medicine.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Jarvik
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Lipitor is a statin, a class of drugs that has come under fire recently because of questions about their effectiveness and safety. However, don’t expect either meaningful regulation of the drug industry or enforcement action against companies that run misleading ads under a Republican administration that believes the best form of government is a corporate CEO doing whatever he pleases. Ever since the GOP’s trained monkey took over a stolen White House 7 years ago the reliability and safety of food, drugs, and even toys has gone steadily downhill. That’s because Republicans don’t give a damn about consumers, they only care about corporate profits. Their answer to dangerous products is to take away your right to sue the company that kills or injures you or your loved ones. Responsible voters don’t vote Repoublican, or let their friends and family vote Republican! The only way to solve this problem is to completely purge Republicans from all positions of power.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@88 Yeah, that’s a good idea — and it would also keep church-going fundies from sneaking into our caucuses and pretending to be Democrats.
There’s a lot of that going around these days. In fact, it’s getting hard to find anyone who even calls himself a “Republican” anymore. What you get instead is candidates like McGavick (who omitted his party affiliation from his campaign ads) and Satterberg (who campaigned as a “nonpartisan” candidate). The GOP brand name is tarnished, you see.
Even on this board, you see a lot of wingnut trolls putting “Democrat” in their screen names, and claiming to be Democrats in their spews. They just don’t want to admit being what they are — Republicans. Ted Bundy was a Republican, you see. So are many other prison inmates.
Nowadays, admitting they’re Republicans is like showing up for a PTSA meeting in biker garb — it impairs their credibility, you see.
Well, we don’t want any fucking Republicans in our caucuses! Church is a better place for them. They need all the church they can get. (Not that any of them ever listened to a preacher or actually understood the words they read in the Bible, or ever will.) I’d much rather have them standing in a barn somewhere, closing their eyes and lowering their heads, raising their arms, and praying for the Rapture to take them, than polluting our caucuses with their presence.

GOP insiders are now openly discussing the possibility of a deadlocked convention.
“In the major contests so far – Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan – three different Republicans have finished first. If former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson scores the win he hopes for in South Carolina on Saturday, he would be the fourth first-place finisher. Likewise, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani could be the fifth winner in the five contests if he proves wise in picking Florida’s Jan. 29 primary as his first big stand. …
“The GOP process could go ‘right up to the point that we don’t have a … candidate with enough … votes to win’ the nomination when the conventions start, said Herbert Schoenbohm, Republican Party chairman for the Virgin Islands.”

“A new InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll in South Carolina … has Obama with a double-digit lead over Clinton and Edwards.
“Obama won all the age groups under 65; carried Republicans, Democrats and independents; and carried blacks with 61%, compared to 17% for Clinton.
“Obama 41
“Clinton 31
“Edwards 13”
http://time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Let’s say Obama goes into S. Carolina with strong leads in the polls over Clinton and Edwards, but the actual result flips to one of those other candidates — as it did in New Hampshire. That would call into question both the accuracy of the polls and the credibility of Obama’s candidate power, wouldn’t it? The upshot is Obama can’t afford another New Hampshire — if the polls show him far ahead, he MUST win in S. Carolina, and if he doesn’t his candidacy is in trouble, because Democrats all over the country will distrust the polls and doubt his electability.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Getting only 13% in S. Carolina would, I think, just about finish off Edwards. This isn’t necessarily a must-win for him, but he needs a strong showing, or it will be hard to see a rationale for continuing.
FricknFrack spews:
@94 RR
I don’t know. After Obama and Clinton (and their supporters & the Rove crowd) finish tearing each other to shreds, Edwards might be the only one left standing. I think Edwards scares the crap out of the lobbyists and the ‘business as usual’ crowd. That’s why the press keeps pointedly ignoring him. He’s been outspent 5-to-1 IIRC, yet still at the top third. Truly BUGS me that the media is trying to make the selections here, just like the media selectively beat the war drums that sent us to Iraq to fetch all them WMD (that shrub told them was there). Why not let the VOTERs decide whom they want in this campaign?
I hope Edwards keeps hanging in there. There are more states than the few who have voted. I think the Feb 5th Super Tuesday might be a better reflection of where he stands, and that’s not really so far in the future, considering how long this race has been in the running already.

Just a reminder that if you invested in the Dow Jones Industrial Averages, you would have lost 5.3% (-5.3%) over the seven years of the Bush presidency. And the trend is downward.
Considering that most experts expect the stock market to grow an average of nine to ten percent a year, not LOSE money over a SEVEN YEAR PERIOD, that is an incredible indictment of the Bush economics program, as it relates to the nation as a whole.
Compared with previous (recent) Presidents:
Clinton (8 years) + 304.94%
Reagan (8 years) + 135.13%
Bush I (4 years) + 45.57%
Carter (4 years) – 0.87%
Bush II (7 years) – 5.39%
A couple of years ago, when I first started coming to this board, some of the wingnuts would post praises for Bush everytime the market jumped up a tick or two (but would be noticably quiet when it dropped back down). Notice you don’t hear much cheering from them over the past year?

rhp6033 spews:
I used to “flip houses”, on a part-time basis, if you want to use that term to buy troubled properties which you remodel and resell. I quit about two years ago, when the TV shows came out and everybody thought they could make a bundle doing it. Drove the prices up, and most didn’t know how to do it right, now lots of those people are in foreclosure. Hint: don’t get involved unless you know how to do most of the work yourself – you may well find that’s the only way you can get it done. Fortunately, my grandfather was a carpenter, and my father crew up “pounding nails”, and I helped a couple of friends build their houses, so I picked up a bit about construction along the way.
The shows can be entertaining, though, in a “Darwin Awards” sort of way. One newbie couple was walking through a modest 1950’s rambler as the contractor was advising them to install marble countertops, upscale tile floors, move interior walls a few feet in one direction or another, replace all the windows, etc. They told him to go ahead and start the next day – no discussion shown about how much any of that was going to cost! I turned it off at that point – I have my limits when it comes to watching a train wreck which is about to happen.
I give it another few months for the market to sort itself out, unless I happen to find a bank-foreclosed property which is too good to pass up in the meantime.

I doubt anyone will come back to read this, off & on to newer stuff, but I called Pelz’s office today. Lady was pleasant and when I said I was calling about the caucus convention, she immediately said “OH YEAH!” Sounds like they have received many calls.
Told her I thought it was a slap in the face, and I’m not even Jewish. She told me they have scheduled a meeting on Jan 25th, with the intention of changing the date. Said it was simply a mistake, that people just didn’t look at their calendars. I asked if, next year, does she suppose people will remember to look at their calendars? She gave an exasperated sounding “OH YEAH!” (I’m sure it is exasperating for her to be the person stuck answering all the calls!) Was worth the effort to call though, IMO, just to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

You must be blowing the hard stuff Xmas creep, No, the stains will not be withdrawn. I am not a big fan but their safety is pretty clear,
Though marijuana is even safer.
For sethin really dangerous, try eating a grilled hamburger or a chicken salad sandwich .. or taking health store vitamins.
christmasghost spews:
seattlejew….you are not in a position to judge this one my dear. the statins will be pulled very soon…and good riddance. amusing that in order for you to make your “point” you must go to a personal attack. that’s just sad.
you are about as qualified as “dr.” jarvik,……….
SeattleJew spews:
FWIW
There are issues with the statins but not the kind of issues that lead to withdrawal or a drug. I work in this area and have a number of concerns about the statins, nonetheless I have seen no data that would block their use… while I suppose it is possible that there is a surprise somewhere, I do not see anything that would lead to their being withdrawn.
christmasghost spews:
seattlejew………there is a big surprise coming. the real data. the “rare” side effects were not rare at all. and much of the damage that the side effects cause is permanent. this is going to be a very costly problem for the companies. but, frankly, i think they deserve what they get on this one. the statins are over prescribed very very dangerous drugs with very little upside.
didn’t you ever wonder why they couldn’t even get a real doctor or researcher to pimp these things? jarvik? what a tool he is…….
SeattleJew spews:
Again,
I think I know theissue you are discussing, in fact it effected me. I am also geenrally a skeptic on this class of drugs BUT, the effects I know of are not going to produce any major FDA action. Indeed there are more than few folks who want statins adopted as vitamins.
christmasghost spews:
seattlejew…the people you know that want statins as vitamins? seriously? what? have they been taking statins and it destroyed their brains to that degree?
when you said that it affected you, are you saying that you were taking them and had a bad reaction?
i am a huge skeptic of the whole cholesterol will kill you crap…period. it’s just not as simple as that [as i am sure you are aware] but people in america want to be able to take a pill to cure everything. there are no free rides…always a down side to everything.what will kill you is inflammation….as you know. what so many people don’t realize is how important cholesterol is to the human body. why, we couldn’t function without it.
diet ,exercise and natural cholesterol controls are more effective and much safer.
but, trust me on this….you will soon see the statins in the same class as other fab drugs that were going to save the world….such as vioxx.and that is exactly where they belong.
if people wanted to be healthy they would exercise, eat well, try to avoid stress [stress is a bigger killer than cholesterol any day],take aspirin [and avoid tylenol for god’s sake!!!] and LAUGH more. after that it’s up to your genes……..
i am interested in your experience with statins.
christmasghost spews:
SJ….you and i both know that the FDA is a toothless old dog that reacts as fast as a dead lizard and is about as flexible as cement.two of the boobs i have fired have ended up there. we are talking about “scientists” that can’t keep their data straight. one of them, an east indian, could never reproduce any data he first produced. does that tell you anything?
my experience with the FDA and CDC have convinced me beyond a shadow of a doubt that the worst thing any of us could wish for is national health care. it would make a free clinic in the tenderloin look like the mayo clinic.
this isn’t a liberal/ conservative thing either. this is a human thing. you know what i am talking about……..
SeattleJew spews:
@117 Take a lok at this weeks Business Week for a rather antis statin story.
I am rather well known as a crtic of the statins but your comments go far beyond reason.
First: As the articvle says, NOONE disputes that the statins have a good effect on coronary artery disease and longevity. The issue is whether the benefit is worth costs. What may startle you is that this is purely a socialist issue. With social medicine, the Canadians have asked whether the cost to society of buying these drugs is worth the benefit as compared with other cardiovascular health approaches .. form diet etc. to angioplasty. In the US we (still) have choice and, yes advertising. Most US folks, knowing that statins are likely ,to increase their life spans will want the drug even if the benefit is small.
2. What is “natural” Unfortunately there is nothing natural in humans living much beyond 50. These wierd diets folks choose to make them live longer are no more natural tham eating Purina chow or McDs.
3, So yo thihnk aspirin is OK? I do too but it is nit in any way natural.
Persoanlly, knowing what I d know, I would go back on the statins if it were not that I had muscle wasting (never proven t be statin caused)..
4, VIOX was never found harmful. As iy happens I reviewed the evidence for a lawyer (Merck). My summary, was tghat VIOXX is a very useable drug and it sucks that people who can benefit from it are now deprived. The risk, was real, but not unexpected and easily managed.
SeattleJew spews:
Actually, my experience with both the FDA and the CDC are 180 degrees oposite ot your own . I do think the FD could do better but the politics makies that unlikely.
christmasghost spews:
seattlejew….don’t you think that as a researcher it is your DUTY to inform the FDA [formally] of your experience with the statin drugs?
“Persoanlly, knowing what I d know, I would go back on the statins if it were not that I had muscle wasting (never proven t be statin caused)..”
so…IF it wasn’t the statins then why aren’t you back on them? come on!
doctors know almost nothing about all the new drugs that are constantly coming on the market. one of my friends developed the muscle wasting and he was actually told by his doc that it must be the childhood polio “coming back”…oh, please.yup…couldn’t be the statins right?
and in your case? what …you suddenly developed a strange muscle wasting disease that no one can diagnose after taking statins and it has nothing to do with statins because old [fake] dr. jarvik tells you so?
you know better than this. let me guess…lipitor?
there is nothing uncommon or rare about the side effects and the FDA knows this perfectly well.
but why worry…after all it’s only your heart that you have to worry about. it’s “just” a muscle too…….
let me guess…you also experienced tiredness, foggy thinking and and inability to concentrate….right?
i interviewed over 40 people that had been on the statins and only one of them didn’t have the “rare” symptoms. so you tell me how rare they are.
