I’m heading down to Oregon today at the invitation of the folks at Loaded Orygun, The Bus Project and The Portland Mercury:

What: Digital Politics Forum–More Than Meets The Eye
Who: Progressive wunderkind David Sirota, BlueO’s Kari Chisholm, The Merc’s own Amy Ruiz, Anna Galland of MoveOn.org and Grand Poobah of Washington State blogging, David Goldstein–fielding questions and discussing issues surrounding the ways that the netroots can and does transform politics.
Where: Acme Pub, Portland
When:7PM is the official start time. But I plan to show up by 5:30 and have some food–so feel free to make an early entrance and join me.

So I won’t be at DL tonight, and I likely won’t be blogging for the next 24 hours or so. Hopefully Will, Darryl and Geov can fill in for me both places.

    3 Good heavens! Well, in a way he was fortunate to go as easily as he did. Congestive heart failure more often than not leads to a lengthy and unpleasant death.

    @1 Puddywacker, aren’t you even a little embarrassed that, under the Bush regime, your fellow Americans have to go to Cuba to get affordable medical care?

    John Edwards has promised universal health care but says the price of it will be continuing deficits.

    @7 I don’t agree with that. There are tremendous inefficiencies in U.S. health care. For example, in the government-run Medicare program, administrative overhead costs are less than 1% but in private sector health care they’re 25%. Deficit financing of our inefficient health care system is not the answer. The answer is replacing our inefficient health care system with a more efficient one. Merely capturing the inefficiencies would enable us to provide health care to everyone, lower health premiums for employers, workers, and retirees, and improve the quality of care — and still free up some extra cash to use elsewhere in the economy for other things we need.

    For example, we don’t need to pay people $50,000,000 a year and give them private jets to run our health care organizations.

    Nor do we need to spend vast sums of taxpayer money on corporate profits in companies like the one owned by Bill Frist’s family. There is no correlation between the Frists being billionaires and the availability, affordability, or quality of health care. The last 6 years have proved that.
