In my previous post I debunked Dino Rossi’s shameful lies about disenfranchised military voters. In King County — the focus of an intense Rossi/BIAW/GOP propaganda campaign to undermine public faith in the electoral process — military ballots not only went out on time, but over 83% were returned by the deadline… a rate equal to the turnout of all registered voters.
In this post I will expose the mock outrage over the “discrepancy” between the number of voters credited with voting, and the number of ballots cast. Ready? They’re not intended to reconcile.
For those actually interested in the truth, King County Director of Elections Dean Logan has posted a document explaining what this voter list really is:
Historically, the number of votes cast and the number of voters credited with voting does not typically balance.
State election laws address ballot security and accountability on the front end of the elections process
Mr. Cynical spews:
Thank you so much for this much needed explanation.
The fact that it took until today to get it is ok too.
I’m sure, in the final analysis, there is absolutely no real felons, dead people, double voters, forgeries etc. I’m sure now there was no ballot-box stuffing or unstuffing. No, nothing like that ever happened.
But I am curious, why did KingCO reconcile in all the past elections prior to Dean Logan (at least 1989-2002) as reported?
And why won’t Logan’s asst. Bill H. return media phone calls?
Ya know Goldy, the cover-up is always worse than the original act.
Sharkansky is poised to reconcile his prior list with whatever Logan creates this time. Only fair to see the changes, don’t you think?
We also want to see the changes from the date of the original certification until now…only fair, don’t you think?
A whole lot of auditing work remains to be done.
Just because Logan, Berendt & Gregoire say something, don’t make it so.
How do you think all of the Elections Division folks are going to respond when “deposed under oath”?? Only fair, don’t you think?
Jim King spews:
Goldy- nice spin, but it doesn’t wash. Whether or not the reconciliation is “intended” to be used to yest for either fraud or incompetence, it is a very useful tool for ferreting out the existence of one or the other.
The bottom line is that all of the examples you give are trackable, and to the extent that the numbers cannot be reconciled, there are ballots entered into the system that should NOT have been. We now know one type of problem- illegally cast provisional ballots (any provisional ballot simply entered into the vote counting machine without going through the proper process is illegal, period.)- there are probably others. As far as this voter is concerned, any number of ballots above the number of voters constitutes that number of illegal votes.
I also note that King County Elections keeps saying “It is not proof of fraud”, as if that is some magic mantra that excuses gross incompetence. We don’t need fraud. We HAVE gross incompetence.
The Democrats are desperate, which is why Berendt and his ilk are trying to drum up hotline calls. There are now enough Democratic legislators off the reservation that Frank Chopp and Lisa Brown cannot deliver majorities in a recorded vote to certify this mess.
Hang on for the fun next week- I think it quite appropos that Inaugural Ball tickets are being given to the homeless by those too disgusted to attend…
bby spews:
Jim, does that include Clark, Snohomish and Pierce and ????? of the possible cow counties?
All unreconciled and offering explanations the same as Logan.
bby spews:
Jim – who are the Tim Sheldon followers?
DCF spews:
Just one more pot-hole that needs to be fixed. If reconciliation is not a part of certifying an election, it needs to be. I’ll have to ask about Sheldon’s Dinocracy when I visit his office in a couple of weeks. He’s already on my need to remove list, due to lack of response to his constituents.
Jim King spews:
bby- Terwilliger, the Democratic auditor in Snohomish, has proven to be the most incompetent of the bunch. McCarthy in Pierce, Flynn in Kitsap, are all much closer. But bby- you folks seem to think that the purple counties excuse King- it doesn’t sell. Those are roughly 50-50 splits, Democratic Auditors. And no where near the problems we have seen out of King County.
Spin and wash all you want- the first test is the 147 sitting in judgement next week, and no, bby, you don’t get information here… and they are NOT Tim Sheldon followers- they are honest legislators who believe this mess stinks, and they are very unwilling to put THEIR political careers on the line just so Gregoire can dance at her ball next Wednesday. Some support Dino- some dislike Gregoire- not all are supportive- yet- of a revote. But they all think this mess needs some honest answers, and they are not buying the bullshit now emanating from the auditors.
One specifically noted that the auditors were very forthright about earlier mistakes, but are now so obviously in damage control mode they remind her of DSHS bureaucrats trying to explain why another kid died… “Just routine, happens every year, not anyone’s fault”- as if those are valid reasons…
Rick spews:
Hey Goldy, reconciling the number of voters/ballots and your monthly bank statement are “kinda-sorta” the same thing? It would be “convenient” if they balanced, but other than that, it’s no big deal. This is exactly why and how the D’s are flushing the economy of our state down the toilet. With liberals, it’s all about “feelings” and “intentions”, not real numbers.
Janet S spews:
It sounds like this is confusing two different tasks. Reconciling your check book is validating the balance, and making sure that all the records are correct. Measuring it against the monthly budget is a subjective action to make future decisions. They are two very different endeavors.
Same with elections. Reconciling who said they voted, and how many, to the actual ballots is a factual exercise. We don’t know if the “balance” is correct unless this is done. King County seems to be telling us “trust us, it’s correct.”
I don’t know about you, but I don’t buy it. Prove the vote counts with transparent records. Otherwise, the system loses its legitimacy.
paul daniel spews:
Goldy,
Sorry, wrong analagy. You say it’s no big deal if KC can’t reconcile the numbers. It’s kind of like when your checkbook doesn’t match your budget. Nope, that’s not work. IT’S MORE LIKE WHEN YOUR CHECKBOOK DOESN’T MATCH YOUR BANK STATEMENT.” When that happens you try and find the error, especially when the bank says you have less money than your book says!
paul daniel
jcricket spews:
And your checkbook is never wrong, of course. It’s not possible that you’ve made the error, forgotten to write down a check, bounced a check and failed to notice the bank charges. No, that’s not possible. Never happens.
jcricket spews:
So you’re going to call every election into question, then, right? Were are you calling for looking into the presidential election? There’s a tiny margin (statewide) of votes in New Mexico and Iowa – we should investigate those states.
How about Ohio? Where despite the larger margin, there may even be more serious issues (lack of voting machines, broken vote counting machines, electronic machines reporting twice as many ballots for Bush as votes cast). Nope, Republican elected officials there are too busy thwarting people from enforcing HAVA.
Why didn’t you call for a re-vote in Florida of 2000 when it was clear that a poorly designed ballot likely gave your guy the win? Or there were credible reports of voter intimidation? Oh, that’s right, you were too busy using your lawyers to prevent overseas Democratic absentee ballots without signatures from being counted while arguing that identical Republican ballots shoudl be counted. Or you were too busy yelling, “Concede. Concede”. Florida had no statewide manual recount as part of its laws, so you said “Gore exhausted his legal options”. Well, there’s no re-vote allowed for. File for a contest and succeed or fail. Them’s the rules.
It’s total BS when Republicans suddenly “care” about transparency only because their guy lost. You’re more than happy to ignore similar or more serious problems on a nationwide scale.

Give me a break – it doesn’t MATTER who made the damned mistake in the checkbook, the bottom line is a mistake WAS made and to proceed accurately (legitimately) you have to acknowledge the mistake then correct it.
Good grief, I do believe cricket subscribes to the wizard of oz school of thought: “pay no attention to that man behind the curtain” …’pay no attention to the FACTS.’
paul daniel spews:
jcricket,
Of course it happens. And when it happens in a close election where it could determine the outcome you go to court and have them order a revote.

I can always balance my checkbook exactly. If I look at my bank statement, I can tell where every penny in my account came from, and where every penny went.
I can also take comfort in the fact that the bank has internal controls, of several sorts. One of them is to keep track of every penny of physical money that is being handled and how much is at any given location (teller A, teller B, vault, etc.) at any given time. There are similar controls on where the electronic money is located. And there are controls to make sure that everyone’s account balance is correct as well.
There is no reason why ballots cannot be tracked in some fashion approaching the degree of efficiency of a bank. Apparently, the number of ballots counted were matched with the number of actual voters within about 25 countywide each election from 1989 to 2002. And this was done prior to certification.
Even if the numbers somehow match up this time (which seems to be absolutely impossible), there is no excuse why this should not have been done by November 17, 2004, when the initial county certification was due.

Thank you ever so much for proving how right the Rossi campaign and the conservatives are in shining the light of truth on the Washington election. By your glee in saying that an election that had a difference of over 150,000 votes needs to be re-examined we can only assume you are equally as anxious to examine an election that has a difference of 0.00086% of that.
Nope, the only thing Boxer is doing is wasting time and consequently taxpayer money. Isn’t it funny how even Kerry hasn’t disputed Ohio yet Boxer is roaring? Isn’t it funny that Kerry won Pennsylvania by a minute (and aberrant) margin and NO ONE is begging to rexamine THAT?

Why don’t we just do a nationwide revote? And don’t limit it to the President and Washington Governor. Let’s revote on the entire U.S. Congress and the entire Washington Legislature. Not just the people we elected (?) in November 2004, but everyone, including U.S. and state Senators whose terms are not yet expired.
That way, voters nationwide can express their opinions on whether or not the claims of election fraud in Ohio and Washington are true. If they believe the former and not the latter, they can vote Democrat. If they believe the latter and not the former, they can vote Republican.
If 118,000 votes justifies a revote in Ohio, then certainly 129 votes justifies a revote in Washington. But I don’t want to stop there, and would prefer everything be revoted, so we can have a massive red landslide sweeping accross the country.
by HowCanYouBeProudtobeAnASS spews:
I take it back. Boxer is not just wasting time and taxpayer money. She’s doing one other important (to her) thing – attempting to prove her RELEVANCY (“Look at me! Yoohoo! Here I am… look at ME!”)
Well, we’re all looking Ms Boxer and you look foolish.
Cheryl the Proud Progressive spews:
By all means. Let’s keep voting until we can find an election in which absolutely zero mistakes occurred. We may have to keep having elections until people get sick of it and only 9 of them vote, but as long as at least 5 vote for Rossi, no problem, right?
There will always be mistakes and errors in an election involving this many people. The point is, unless you can find a pattern that indicates the mistakes went disproportionately for one candidate or the other, there is no basis to contest the election.
Sore losers must also be awfully anal about things.
Cheryl the Proud Progressive spews:
Hey ASS… You think Barbara Boxer is wasting taxpayer time and money? Look closer to home first — that would be your beloved Dino Rossi wasting time and money. And yes, if these are the new election rules — if Dino somehow managed to get a new election out of this — then by God you can be assured that we will spend an awful lot of energy and money contesting every future election result. What a waste. The longer this goes on, the more likely that becomes and could ultimately destroy the whole democratic (small d) experiment that is the United States system of government. So if Dino and the Rs had one whit of true caring about this state and this country, they would just accept their loss. On the military ballots discussion, I pointed out that there were probably mistakes in other counties in the same proportion as votes cast. The Rs got all het up and wanted to know how I knew this. My point is, how do you know it’s not true? You don’t. And until you have some solid evidence, don’t try going to court and expect to win. And going to court is what the LAW allows at this point. There is absolutely NO basis for a revote, which Gregoire would win, by the way, because all the liberals who voted for Bennett or Sims would come around to her. It wastes time, money and hurts democracy. But go ahead and try. Nothing could be worse than losing, right?

Cheryl the Proud Progressive spews:
First of all, dipstick, it’s offensive that you think church-going liberals like myself don’t exist. I go to a great progressive church where, gasp, even homos are told God loves them. But if we’re going to divide the country, let’s talk about the “Red” side of it.
Everyone will own an assault rifle. Women will be required to stay at home raising as many children as they can have, including extremely deformed ones, because abortion and birth-control will be illegal. Once in a while, someone will be discovered to be a closet case, usually when the police review the tapes from the hidden bedroom-cams installed with the full blessings of the conservative courts. Anyway, homos, along with people who practice any sort of non-missionary style sex will be jailed or, if available, placed in a stockade. Anyone who loses a job or suffers a disability will be left begging on the street corners. If they die, heck, it’s nice to be rid of a drain on this utopian society. Science will be banned from the classrooms unless it is vetted by a group of evangelical pastors. Speaking of pastors, attendance at a Christian church twice a week is mandatory (except when there’s a game on). The air will be filthy because, hey, it’s bad for business to have to reduce emissions. Ditto the water. (In fact, the aforementioned extremely deformed children will be in greater number because of all the lead and pesticides everyone ingests. But that’s actually a good thing. The more lead a child is exposed to, the lower the intelligence. They won’t question authority nearly as much.) Elderly people will just have to work until they absolutely can’t, then their children will take them in. Or they will end up on the streets. Much better than that leftie Social Security claptrap. They will have some lovely pictures of forests and trees to show the children, but none of the real thing. Oh, and screw zoning laws. If someone has the money to put a factory next to your house to spew filth, that’s their right.
There will be an end to any appeals of death sentences (handed out for not attending church or other such heinous behavior no doubt) and if a few innocent people die, well, God will take care of it.
Roads and schools will be privately owned and operated, which means only the very wealthy can use them. But hey, it’s survival of the fittest here in Redland and we like it that way!
The biggest problem will be that the children who, for whatever reason, don’t have brain damage from lead exposure. They will try to defect to “Blueland.” But the awesome military might of Redland will prevent this, for the most part. The side benefit, by the way, of all the open pit mining is that it provides a cost-effective place to dispose of the bodies of the indigent or criminal. Which, come to think of it, in Redland is the same thing. Ahhh yes. The land of the free, indeed.
It would work quite well, actually. The Redland could export some of its oil to Blueland and Blueland would trade for clean water. Yay!
Blueland will have a great tourist trade from the richest of the Redland people who come to actually see trees and unpolluted water.
Hey, given the two options, I’ll take Blueland any day. And don’t worry, we won’t gouge you too much for the water.

The voter list is not designed or intended to reconcile with the ballots cast list. It is not compiled for that purpose. It is not part of the controls used to secure the election.
This is what Dean Logan has said. This is what Republican Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey said. This is what the other auditors are saying.
Sorry if that doesn’t fit in with your paranoid fantasies, but those are the facts.
So if you are going to deny that the elections process works the way the people who actually run the elections tell you it works, then at least have the balls to come on out and call them all a bunch of liars. Come on, let me hear it from you… tell me that Dean Logan is lying. Tell me that Terwilliger, and Flynn and McCarthy are liars. Tell me that Kimsey is a liar.
It’s amazing that you’re willing to accept Snark’s word on how all this works, but you refuse to accept the word of the experts who actually run our election.
And Cynic… do you really think that after reporting all this to the press, and issuing public statements, that Logan is going to tell a different story under oath? Are you going to accuse him of perjury? Are you ready to put Logan in jail now? Is that how low the BIAW is willing go… ready to put innocent people in jail if it suits their political ends?

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll be telling my readers to do the same.

You support Boxer and the Dems “contest” of Ohio (a margin over 1000 times that of Gregoires) but criticize Rossi for pursuing his legal remedies with a margin of 129 votes. Hypocracy !!! You expose yourself with every post, I must turn away it isn’t pretty.
Mr. Cynical spews:
Goldy–
Read the statutes. All ballots must be accounted for & voters credited for casting ballots. How are you certain this has happened? Why you reconcile the voters credited with voting to the ballots counted. And how do you do that?
Perhaps some County’s failed to release the data requested so this could occur. It was obvious the information was going to be used to valid voters and make sure there was no ballotbox STUFFING and UNSTUFFING.
I’ve heard Greg Kimsey is a fine Auditor. Did you ever stop to think that maybe his comments were taken out of context??
What will hopefully soon come out is the effort of Corky Mattingly, loyal Dem Yakima Co. (believe it or not she is apparently the only elected Dem in Yakima Co.) to “circle the wagons” behind Dean Logan and attest to what a fair and great job Logan did WITHOUT EVER LOOKING INTO WHETHER HE DID A GOOD JOB OR NOT. That is ridiculous. These are Auditors and Election Officials.
So Goldy, if you want to go ahead and spin that some type of reconciliation NEED NOT BE DONE before certification, go ahead & push it….PLEASE. But ask yourself, how do you know BALLOT BOXES weren’t stuffed OR Ballots weren’t taken and not counted without a reconciliation? I thought you wanted to make sure every legitimate vote was counted and no illegitimate votes were counted. Just how do you propose to do it Goldy?
PS Your example of comparing this election verification with an analogy of comparing your checkbook balance with a Budget????rather than the analogy of reconciling your checking account balance with the bank statement qualifies you Goldy as:
DUMBASS OF THE NEW MILLENIUM!!!
Congratulations Sir! And you criticize folks for sending their kids to religous schools saying they don’t get a balanced enough education????

1) Of course I “don’t have any experience running an election”. There are only 39 election supervisors in the State and I’m not one of them. Are you? But I have spent many weeks over the years personally involved on a County level. I know right from wrong on “best practices”.
2) The crediting process is part of the election process just like certifying is. The canvassing boards ought to demand a reconciliation before they certify. How else do you know all the legitimate ballots were counted and accounted for?
