Before anyone here misunderstands, go to my blog. I am a very uptight Jew. I think fundies of all kinds are committing blasphemy in an era where Science, call it God if you want, provides a poweful vision of Reality. Denying Evolution is as disgusting today as denying Jesus or misusing the name of G-D must have been when religion was our only tie to the underlying reality. Any exclusivist, any dogma that teaches that all other beliefs lead to Hell is despicable. Indeed one thing I am very proud of is that Judaism has never hed to this sort Christain/Islamic bigotry. Jews are actually taught, that the goyem can more easily please the Diety because the Unnamed One has made special demands on “His” people.
NWhile even Jewish fundamentlaism teaches respect for pious goyem, the reward from the Islmaic world and Xtain world is to diss my poeple. Try as he might, even John XXIII, could not dissipate the smog arising form the idea that the Jewish God was bad and needed to be supplanted by the human sacrifice of the crucification. Millions of Jews (and Muslims and Pagans and … have dies for that cross.
If Black had decried that, as part of his speech seemed to, I would have been very pleased. Instead, his fowl mouth merely adds to bigotry.

I could if I chose take some offense about Black’s crack about Catholic priests, but on thinking about it, I’m sure he’s fully aware that there have been plenty of Protestant clergy (and probably Jewish, Islamic, Hindi, Bhuddist and whatever else) caught…uh…looking for love in the wrong places. What he said just fit in the framework where he was trying to get to a punch line without putting the audience to sleep.
I really liked the idea of how maybe “God has mellowed after having a son, or something”. Think about it…has anyone you know been turned into a pillar of salt lately? Have we had a “pineapple express” that’s lasted forty days and forty nights? (Maybe we actually have, but not all of the sewers backed up.)
One impression I can’t shake of the extreme evangelicals is that they must be disappointed that there hasn’t been more divinely-ordained hellfire, brimstone, death, destruction and general nastyness–so they’re actively lobbying for more of same. They’re afraid of just shuffling through perfectly ordinary lives and departing this Earth without getting to be part of Something Important.

There are very good reasons for Jews to resent Christianity and Islam. Both evangelical religions have claimed to improved on us and then turned their hatred toward us. I recenlty heard the wonderful Somai author, Ali, describe israel as a test of real tolerance because it meant for the first time jews were trying to live within Islam bbut as an equla and independent people. Recenlty there is quote from Churchill, noting that antisemitism was partly a result of Jewish insisteance on being different.
I suspect black amuses many antisemites.

re 22: An actual reason for Eurpean anti- Semitism is that for many , many years after the Diaspora, European rulers used Jews as tax collectors. You can easily see where money and Jews began to have a negative conotation in the average Oaf’s mind.
Actually, the worst of the tax collector schtick was not in areas where antisemtism was at its worst. There were no Jews collecting taxes in the Czar’s Russia.
The underlying issue is difference and esp the rejection of Jesus. Martin Luther was rabid about this and (so sadly) my personal Hero, T. Jefferson, wrote terrible things about Jews. If you grow up accepting the Jesus story as history, then the Jew is naturally mean and stiff necked.
This is the true miracle of the one Pope to try to change 1700 years of history, John the XXIII. When Constantine institutionalized the Church, obviously the story and credo of the Church could not be that Jesus was a member of a people resisting Roman rule. Associating the Sermon on the Mount with the pharisees’ concept of resistance to Greko-roman culture, would not have gine down well in Imperial Rome!
Instead the Nicean bible consistently reflects Jesus blaming the tensions with Rome on the Jews .. esp. the Pharisees who historically were the core of the resistance. Hillel, who many have been the source of much that Jesus is said to have taught, can never be a hero to Christians.
Unfortunately, the prejudice is not limited to the illiterate right. Once we were (sort of) allowed into Prussia, there was immense liberal pressure for Jews to convert. After all, if NO religion matters, why be a Jew? Those conversions did not work out too well when the Nazis came.
At one time I was critical of J XXIII for not going further, offering to restitution of stolen items (possible including the Temple treasures!). I have since read stories that convice me that this was aman of immense courage and watched as his successors have stepped backwards.
My belief is that Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Mormons , Pagans, .. all of the non Xtain world living within this Xian country should insist on respect. Personally, we raised our kids to know as much as we could help them learn about other cultures. That means being respectufl AND honest. Black is neither.
I see no difference between him and Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter. Toilet humor at best.
