Hey you-
Yeah, you!
Do you like live and local talk radio?
Then sign this open letter, and let Seattle radio stations know that live and local is worth something to you!
Letter To 710 KIRO
If you like talk radio, sign the letter. Liberals and conservatives agree that live and local talk radio is worth supporting.
All you have to do is sign the letter!
Make it happen, Horse’s Ass readers. Tell the radio brass that you want this kind of programming on the air.
Do it!
YellowPup spews:
Already signed. Hope it helps.
Thomas Trainwinder spews:
Good luck. Not sure letters like this amount to a hill of beans though…..

Roger Rabbit spews:
I can’t give KIRO advice on business decisions. I can only tell me what I want as a listener. Radio executives know that most of their audience is drivers, and people tend to keep their car radios tuned to the same station all the time. So, if you have a show they want to hear, your station will be what they listen to the rest of the time, too. Now that Goldy is gone, my radio is tuned back to 1090 and that’s what I listen to now. If they want me to listen to 710, they’ll have to bring Goldy back — or pick up the Air America franchise.
Roger Rabbit spews:

Mark The Redneck-Wonk spews:
Goldy got bitch slapped by the invisible hand. Nothing gonna change that. The fact of the matter is that there is no market for librul shit talk radio.
Hey Goldy, post the “wonk” segment from your last show. That was fucking priceless.
Roger Rabbit spews:
If Huckabee or Paul gets elected president and replaces the progressive income tax with the so-called “FairTax”, i.e., a 40% federal sales tax on all purchases, I wonder if there’ll be exemptions?
I’ll bet there will! Remember how Congress promised to “simplify” the income tax back in the ’80s, but all kinds of special tax breaks have crept back into the code? Well, why won’t the same thing happen to the Sales Tax?
The first thing Congress will exempt is food. Then, senior citizens will lobby to exempt doctor bills and prescription medicines. That will be followed by exemptions for necessities like yachts and private jets. In the end, only the stuff working people buy will be taxed.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Every time Congress “reforms” taxes, the rich people who pay for political campaigns end up paying less, and the peasants pay more.

roger…your lack of understanding how the economy works is frightening. you think the fair tax would be horrible for poor people? in this country corporations pay the [i believe]highest taxes in the world.all that does is keep me from hiring more people.and it makes automation look really really good. that’s where a lot of the jobs have already gone. unless you have run a company, especially manufacturing with R and D, you don’t have a clue as to how much it costs for even one employee.
and with the fair tax even drug dealers and criminals would be paying taxes. you want to look at a group of people that cost us all way more than they are worth? how about the criminals. they put people in the hospital and often those people can’t pay their bills. they cost us in police time and money, courts, child welfare….the list goes on and on.
and i have noticed that the only people that want higher taxes are the illiterate and the low rent non workers. after all…uncle sam won’t mind if you pay double or triple your tax bill. why drag the rest of us into it? hey bill gates? you are always saying we should be paying more in taxes, right? why don’t you? why don’t you even pay at the rate the rest of us are? stop using all those hidey holes and just pay up.
a flat or fair tax would not punish people for working hard, growing old, or saving their money. how can any of you be against that?
the answer? you are trough feeders…….
Mike spews:
@13 – Poor people buy the basic necessities of life with nearly 100% of their income, unlike rich people.
Poor people DON’T buy expensive travel, yachts, and 2nd and 3rd homes.
Plus, lower income people are automatically at a disadvantage with the burden of payroll taxes — an immediate 15% off the top their take home pay. Rich people don’t pay that after a certain cut off.
Politically Incorrect spews:
I hate to break it to all of you, but rich people do pay the vast, vast majority of personal income taxes in the US. Just ask the IRS for its data. If you really, really wanted to “get these rich bastards,” you’d support a flat-rate income tax with no (and I mean no) exemptions. A flat rate tax is the fairest tax of all because it does not discriminate in favor or against the income tax payer. It’s the same sinclg rate, regardless of level of income.
christmasghost spews:
mike….absolutely. and why isn’t this more obvious to our friends here?
if we went to a fair tax the “rich” would pay their share and then some. i thought that’s what everyone here wanted, right? right?
i suspect that most of the screamers and whiners on here are like goldy. they don’t have a real job and so have no idea what real people have to pay. they want handouts. those days are over.
most of these people don’t even seem to realize that we have not even had income tax for that long [it just seems like forever]….but we can thank the dems for it anyway.
Piper Scott spews:
@16…Mike…
Then let’s kill all the rich people and take all their money!
Let’s see…who’s “rich?” Why, we’ll use the standards of a Calcutta street begger who makes…nothing! Anyone making more than nothing is richer than the street begger, so kill EVERYONE and TAKE ALL THEIR MONEY!!!
That’s the economic philosophy of the left: class envy and redistribution of wealth. Legalized theft is another term for it.

17 – A flat tax would have to be in 20 percent range to be revenue neutral so it would be totally unfair to poor and middle income tax payers.
A flat tax would be a tax increase on the poor and middle class (which right wingers love) and a tax cut on the wealthy (which right wingers also love even if they’re not wealthy).
A progressive income tax is the fairest tax. If rich people think their taxes are too high then they shouldn’t support endless wars , pentagon weapon systems boondoggles or egregious ag subsidies for corporate farmers.

A lot of what I read here about KIRO, free markets, and capitalism, is more rleigion than economics. Seems ot me that lotsa folks here beleive in the great pumpkin free market.
A very large part of modern business has nothing to do with Adams Smith. I do not know a lot abuot KIRO, but at a guess:
1. Bonneville uses KIRO as a source of depreciation. Income matters but possibly less than capital appreciation.
2. Bonneville’s market is NOT Seattle, it is their entire market. This means that even the KIRO inocme may be unimportant in context of how KIRO affects Bonneville’s other sources of income.
Bottom line. Our government gave radio stations like KIRO. licenses in a past era when radio was new, equipment cost large amounts of capital. That license IS the source of Bonneville’s profit.
In the digital era, many more “fequencies” are available. The government ought to change radio into freely broadcast version of the internte. Let KIRO-classic fight it out with

Ghost is daydreaming in her trailer again.
Roger Rabbit spews:
It’s like this, ghost. A corporation legally is a “person” separate and distinct from its shareholders. This has many advantages for the shareholders: They can’t be sued for the corporation’s debts or liabilities, their risk is limited to the capital they put up, etc. In return, the corporation is taxed as a separate entity. The taxes paid by corporations are a small price to pay and an excellent investment in return for the vast expenditures made by government to protect their property and promote their interests, not to mention the huge subsidies and contracts corporations get from government. Corporate welfare costs taxpayers 5 times as much as all the welfare paid to poor people put together. And you’re bitching about corporate taxes? I daresay corporations are getting more from government than they’re paying for.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@17 “I hate to break it to all of you, but rich people do pay the vast, vast majority of personal income taxes in the US.”
They also own the vast, vast majority of private property and enjoy the vast, vast majority of income — so why shouldn’t they?
Rich people don’t pay proportionately as much as poor people. Locally, poor people pay 17% of their income in state and local taxes, whereas rich people pay only 4%. A $1.2 million home on Mercer Island does not pay 3 times as much in property taxes as a $400,000 home in Ballard or Beacon Hill; it pays slightly more than twice as much. The 3 hedge fund managers who each made over $1 billion in 2006 paid capital gains tax rates on their income — a lower rate than that paid by their secretaries and janitors.
And then there are the people who pay no U.S. taxes at all by sheltering their income in Caribbean tax-free havens, a practice which has been encouraged and facilitated by the Bush administration. Yet they make their money by owning businesses in the U.S., they vote and enjoy all the other benefits of citizenship, and travel freely in this country. If it were up to me, I’d say to them, if you don’t want to pay taxes to the U.S., fine, but you don’t get to set foot in this country either — and nor will you export a penny of income from this country.
If Republicans had their way, there would be no taxes at all on inheritances, capital gains, dividends, interest, or other income derived from owning property (as opposed to working). Republicans want to put the ENTIRE TAX BURDEN on wage earners. High-income taxpayers already get to shelter many of the perks of luxury living as “business expense” deductions, or by having their companies own the assets and writing them off as business expenses. In many cases, the rich guy doesn’t own the jet, yacht, or hunting lodge in his own name — the corporation owns it. There are a hell of a lot of rich people who fly into Aspen and other playgrounds for “business meetings.” They fly on private jets, stay at luxury hotels, eat the finest food — and all of it is charged to the company and written off as a business expense because they went through the charade of holding a 1-hour sales meeting. Two CEOs who meet for lunch on the deck of a $30 million yacht to discuss a possible merger write off the whole fucking yacht as a “business expense.”
And Lunchbucket Joe? He can’t deduct his cost of commuting to work, even though his boss who helicopters in from Whidbey Island can. He can’t deduct his tools or union dues, paid for out of his own pocket, unless they exceed 2% of his adjusted gross income. He buys his own baloney sandwiches and pays into the office coffee fund out of his own pocket while the boss writes off the $15,000 espresso machine in his office as a “business expense.”
This whole system is bullshit. The rich are making out like robbers. The working class gets fucked. And then wage earners have to listen to the rich bitching about how “overtaxed” they are.
Maybe what we should do is eliminate all taxes and go to a 100% user fee system. You want Iraq’s oil? Then you pony up $2 trillion to pay for the war. Was one of your executives kidnapped in South America? Fine, send in the Marines, but we’ll send you the bill for actual cost. Want us to protect your factory in Singapore and keep the sea routes open so you can ship your products? Okay, but give us $10 billion for an aircraft carrier, plus $2 billion a year for operating expenses. See what I mean?
The rich company owners are the biggest fucking freeloaders on earth.

Roger Rabbit spews:
Of course the rich pay more taxes. The top 10% get almost half the income.
Roger Rabbit spews:
And, of course, the official figures don’t count income that doesn’t have to be reported, income the government doesn’t know about, income sheltered offshore, or noncash income in the form of the various company-paid perks the rich get. As I said above, the rich rarely own jets, yachts, hunting lodges, and so forth in their own name — but only the rich company owners get to use them; the workers on the shop floor sure as hell don’t.
Roger Rabbit spews:
” … [M]ost efforts at tax ‘reform’ are really attempts to reduce the tax burden on the wealthy. [A] blatant … example of this was the tax act of 1986. Between 1986 and 1987 the effective tax rate on millionaires fell from 40 percent to 29 percent, and as a result they paid $3.6 billion less in tax. Meanwhile people making from $50,000 to $75,000 … paid $7.6 billion more. Some reform.
“The flat-tax scam is more of the same. Nobody’s sure what the actual flat-tax rate would be, but let’s suppose it was 20 percent. Based on the 1992 returns, if this inane proposal were implemented, taxes on everybody making $200,000-plus will go down and those on everybody else will go up. Malcolm Forbes Jr., one of the richest men in America, was the leading backer of the flat tax during the 1996 presidential campaign. Now do you see why?”
http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_139.html
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Most economists say replacing income and payroll taxes with a revenue-neutral federal sales tax would require a tax rate of 40% or more.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Replacing the income tax with a sales tax would, of course, hugely favor the rich because they spend a far smaller percentage of their income and the income they invest would be untaxed.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@31 Bullshit. See #39.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@28 “YLB…that would be 23%”
That would be Funny Math and here’s how the proponents of the so-called “FairTax” (one of the most grotesquely mis-named scams ever to come down the pike) get away with calling a 30% tax a “23%” tax:
Purchase price: $1.00
Tax: $0.30
Add $0.30 to $1.00 and you get $1.30; this is the Total Price
To figure tax rate, divide $0.30 by $1.30 and you get — eureka! — 23%
Roger Rabbit spews:
By anyone else’s calculation, a tax of $0.30 on a $1.00 purchase is a 30% tax, not a 23% tax.
Roger Rabbit spews:
The fact its proponents have to lie about what the tax rate would be proves even they don’t think this turkey would fly if people knew the truth about it.

Well, let’s see — since 1970, GDP has grown enormously, and the average worker’s productivity also has grown enormously, but the average worker’s inflation-adjusted increase in wages is exactly zero.
ALL of the economic gains of the last 37 years have gone to the rich.
Since 2001, real wages have fallen 8%, and labor’s share of GDP has fallen from over 60% to under 50%.
I would say Republicans have accomplished the near-impossible: They’ve taken the world’s richest economy and they have indeed turned it into a zero-sum game.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@45 There’s an obvious solution to this problem, though. Since our system coddles Owners and screws Workers, it’s better to be an Owner than a Worker, sooooo … own, don’t work! That’s what I do. I’m an Owner and Investor of Capital, and I do no fucking work whatsoever, and I don’t produce a fucking goddamned thing! I’m making more money now than I ever did from working, and paying half the taxes I used to pay! Personally, I don’t think that’s very fair to Workers, but I didn’t create this fucked up system, I’m just one little rabbit and all I can do is go with the flow.
In any case, America is a free country — no slaves — and we all have the right to choose between being Owners or Workers. What makes sense to me is that everyone will choose to be an Owner and no one will work! When this happens, wealth will soar! And federal revenues will soar, too, if what Saint Ronnie said is true: The more you cut taxes, the more revenue you rake it! According to this theory, when you cut taxes to zero, revenues become infinite. Then everyone will live like Dubai royalty.
So, if you want to help yourself and help America’s economy, stop working! Do nothing, and produce nothing! You will be rich beyond your wildest dreams, and instead of paying taxes, the government will pay YOU in order to increase its revenues!!

You fail to mention that income tax doesn’t include Payroll tax of 15% on average joes until they make 100k a year then no more tax on payroll. If our govt didn’t steal this money every year to help pay for the huge deficits then you might have a point.
