8 What are you claiming you did, Marvie? Did you go look at all the dead-tree papers from seven years ago, count up the column inches, and compare them with the stories in the same papers about Madoff? Did you do the same with air minutes on all the TeeVee and radio stations from the same two periods? Or did you just have a brain fart while you were jacking off over a video of Ann Coulter?
If Enron did get more coverage, there may have been several reasons:
(1.) Back then, a large “institution” falling through its ass like that was news, in that it was a new and unusual occurrance. Now it seems to be happening several times a week.
(2.) Madoff’s foul-up mainly affected a comparatively small number of rich people, most of whom will get by pretty well anyway despite their losses. Enron’s implosion, and the dirty dealings that led up to it, screwed millions of people, tens of thousands of whom at least were left in significant hardship.
(3.) Enron had higher visibility, because although it was really basically a hedge fund, it had been masquerading as a real, viable business with pretensions of providing some kind of useful service. This included some impressive-looking buildings and other physical assets (which were actually leveraged up the kabongus) and thousands of employees who served as stage props to the whole charade while they pretended to count money that didn’t really exist. A “pure” hedge fund like Maddoff’s (or Sam Israel’s “Bayou” fund) hardly takes more than an answering machine, an email address, and a bank account somewhere to deposit the victims’ checks.

Comparing Madoff to Enron? Apples and oranges?
Enron was a national player, caused thousands of employees to lose their jobs and pensions, helped write the energy policy of the US with Cheney (secretly), got a whole special loophole in the US law courtesy of Phil Gramm and jacked up the oil prices and fuel prices for millions of americans affecting the entire economy.
Madoff: Conned some rich people out of their money – maybe by corrupting the SEC. News – but not on the same order.

CorrectNotRight has a point. Cars last a lot longer here than they do in other places. I remember a few years back when I spoke to my sister, who then was living in Massachusetts, and she told me they were buying a new car. “Why?”, I asked. “It’s only seven years old!” Since I regularly drive cars for about fifteen years, it didn’t make sense to me. “Uhhh, because the bumber just fell off…”, she replied. That’s the difference between living in a location which uses salt regularly, and one that doesn’t.
A friend of mine who works on classic cars says that there are a lot more of them out here that are still in general use (i.e., not collecter’s items). In the southern U.S., the sun and heat tends to destroy the paint jobs and interiors so cars are often scrapped by the time they are ten years old. In the Northeast and Midwest the salt on the road eats away at the undercarriage. Too near the ocean on any coast, and ocean spray does the same damage.
But here in the Pacific Northwest, our biggest problem is that mold eventually starts to eat away at the window sealants. Other than that, it’s just a question of maintenance and milage.
It’s so much nicer to skip over Cynical and Piper and Mark and Troll. They never say anything that is not either racist or just wrong.
