Dino Rossi has tried to create some media buzz touting his fundraising prowess, but now the TNT’s Niki Sullivan reports that while Gov. Chris Gregoire hauled in over $1 million in April, Rossi’s people don’t sound quite so confident:
I talked to challenger Dino Rossi’s campaign this morning — they tell me they’re also still counting, and that Rossi missed out on some precious fundraising time while he peddled his transportation plan around the state.
Is touring the state not fundraising? Was the comment a way to soften the blow of a soft month? I don’t know, but I’ll find out and then tell you all.
Well, at the very least it’s an effort to downplay expectations, but I love the fact that Sullivan routinely uses her TNT blog to ask the kind of cynical, connect-the-dots questions typical of, um, bloggers.
Maybe Mike Dunmire isn’t the only rich Republican around here who knows a losing investment when he sees it.

Could be that Dino’s pals in the BIAW are sitting on too many spec houses they can’t peddle to have much cash to spare for the campaign.

The Republicans in this state have been convinced that all they need to do is repeat the 2004 election, harass the Democrats and the vote counters in King County, and they will have 50% + 1 to win the election this time.
What doesn’t sink in with them is that 2004 was the high point of the Republican Party in this state. That’s as good as it’s going to get for them, for quite some time. Even with the “bump” they got from 9/11, the Afganistan war, and the seemingly successful war in Iraq, they barely won on a national level (some dispute there), and were narrowly defeated in the Wash. State governor’s race. Now that Republican approval ratings are in the toilet (both in terms of Presidential approval ratings and party identification), it’s going to be a lot tougher.
Republicans are now trying to convince everyone that Gregoire is doing a terrible job as governor, but they are getting blank stares in return. Despite the economic problems on a national level, things are still pretty good here. Washington State has been rated as one of the best-managed states, especially when compared with the cost per person. No significant scandals (at least not on the Democratic side).
So unless there is a really, really, big scandal which pops up between now and the election, Gregoire has this one in the bag.
Yea, Rossi’s campaign can’t release final numbers yet. Most of the staff is still down at the metal recyclers cashing in empty pop cans.
