Knute Berger, writing at Crosscut, in a spot-on piece about populism and the loony right’s paranoid tendencies:
(Fox Noise personality Glenn) Beck’s world view does share with some incarnations of populism a distinct paranoia — his diatribes come complete with screen-filling images of Nazi swastikas and jackboots on the march and dire warnings that Obama is selling us out to the international socialists. But his critique is mostly incoherent, as if someone dropped the tray of right-wing refrigerator magnets. Lyndon Larouche makes more sense.

Listen to this liberal talk about the Somali pirate now in US custody:
“Ron Kuby, a New York-based civil rights lawyer, said he has been in discussions about forming a legal team to represent the Somalian.
“I think in this particular case, there’s a grave question as to whether America was in violation of principles of truce in warfare on the high seas,” said Kuby. “This man seemed to come onto the Bainbridge under a flag of truce to negotiate. He was then captured. There is a question whether he is lawfully in American custody and serious questions as to whether he can be prosecuted because of his age.”

N in Seattle spews:
I dunno about the pirate’s age, but if he did board the Bainbridge under a truce flag, and if he was taken into custody involuntarily, then we’re looking at a reprise of some of the more unsavory bits of the behavior of the US Cavalry in the 19th century. Hey, the only good Somali is a dead Somali, right?
BTW, Ron Kuby is a protege’ of William Kunstler, more a free-floating radical libertarian than a progressive.

@1 (also totally off topic) I have to admit to knowing next to nothing about maritime law but is a pirate a representative of a government or state or is Somalia in a declared war against the U.S.? So either “dear leader’s” concept of enemy combatant has always been bogus or the argument of “flag of truce” in this case is silly.
So I guess you’re arguing that the right to be represented by an attorney is a leftist plot to hand victory to criminals.
Let’s see, name a few people who have attornies “fighting for their rights” that are in the news right now. Ted Stevens, Norm Coleman, Randall “Duke” Cunningham, Karl Rove, Harriet Myers…Why do they loathe America so?

It seems to me that you so called Republicans and conservatives don’t fully realize we are a nation at WAR!
We have brave men and women who volunteered to serve in the ugliest cesspools in the world to protect AMERICA!. Every day they put in long, tough, grueling hours. Every day they engage in life and death battles. Every day some of them are wounded – shot, burned, blown up. They lose legs, arms, eyes and suffer terrible brain injuries. Others are mentally wounded and suffer in silence. Some make the supreme sacrifice because LIVING FREE IS WORTH DYING FOR!!
Do you GET THIS???
Then, we get the F’ing Tea Baggers, like Gov. Rick Perry, Tom DeLay, Todd Palin, and Ted “someone needs to beat his ass” Nugent and a whole host of Republicans who hint at seceding from the nation. Nothing can demoralize our troops more than being in Harm’s Way, fighting, bleeding and dying and then having some unpatriotic yahoos who never wore this nation’s cloth talking about not wanting to be Americans any more!!
I mean, WHAT IN THE HELL ARE THEY FIGHTING FOR THEN?????????????????????????????
Can you imagine what the Repukes would have done if they held power in congress and some Lefty Governor talked about busting up America while we were at war with troops on the battlefield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gimmie a break.
If you’re going to stand for the troops then view the DAMN world through those lenses.

Excellent point. The right has become a community of whiners. Talk radio has driven righties to the outer fringes of the political debate. The internet let’s them think that they are strong in number. They are willing, with Limbaugh leading, to tear down this country if they can’t get their way.

Second, from what I hear GBS could kick your butt in less than three seconds.
Third, the only whiners these days are the unpatriotic right wing. While Bush was pursuing the unnecessary war in Iarq – you guys went on and on about supporting the troops and the good ol’ USA- now that Obama is President – where did that rhetoric go?
Hypocrites.
You guys have no new solutions to the problems you created like the Bush recession, the Bush war in Iraq and the Bush torture machine and Gitmo.

You guess wrong, of course. I reckon you need to identify me as someone to the left of Trotsky in order to keep your construct intact.
I’m quite conservative, thank you. I just can’t support a political party who’s track record for more than a quarter century is one of misbegotten war, terrorist attacks on our soil, a ruined economy, record deficits, massive goverment growth, a Monica Goodling-run DOJ, suppression of voter rights, defense systems that don’t work, outing CIA agents, arms for hostages, dead nuns, hypocritical moral values that turned an American political party into a haven for our nation’s pedophiles and perverts, giving accounted billions to right-wing churches, and using wedge issues to divide our nation during a time of war in a way that has led to calls for secession and revolution.
I also have a dislike for pompous, self-admiring individuals who are more than just a little bit too full of themselves.

What, you’ve never engaged in a little editorial excess? I’ll say that I don’t believe you would advocate tearing down this country just to get your way politically. I’d even go so far as to say that I believe you understand and abide by the fact that in a functioning democracy, partisans often don’t get their way. While you’re around, let me ask one favor of you–any chance you might suggest to some of your comrades on the right that they occasionally bring a sense of humor when checking into the fray?
Steve spews:
@30 “you might suggest”
Piper strikes me as someone lacking any sense of humor whatsoever. Troll, on the other hand, can be quite funny, although I can’t say for sure that that’s the intent of his posts.
proud leftist spews:
Steve,
I’ve met Piper. He is indeed a true believer, but I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t advocate secession to get his way. And, while having a healthy ego, he is capable of self-deprecation and even occasionally recognizing folly in his own ranks. Troll, on the other hand, makes comments that amuse us, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t intend them to be funny. When he does appear to be trying to be humorous, his efforts generally fail to reach the level of even a faint smile, rather they are irritants.
Steve spews:
@32 I’ll take your word for it. In person, nearly all my own humor is of the self-deprecating sort. I can rip myself a good one! So I can appreciate that quality in another person, whatever their political persuasion. And I also have an appreciation for bagpipes. In fact, I was shopping around on the internet for bagpipes last year for a Scottish-flavored song I’m recording. I’ve settled on using my Motif synth for now.

Do you write your own stuff?
Steve spews:
@35 Some of it I do write. Hmm, the Scottish song is one. I want that one to be kind of anthemish. I haven’t written lyrics yet. One that I wrote many years ago, “Summer Dreams”, and am now recording was originally sort of a Youngbloods type rock piece. It’s evolved into more of a funk thing now. A blues number is in the works. I’m calling it “Blue City” and trying to come up with lyrics that haven’t been used before – not so easy with blues. I’m working on some early Claptonish-Bluesbreakers type guitar solos for that one, following a tenor sax intro solo. I’m turning “You’re the one that I want” from Grease into a funkified instrumental with alto and tenor sax taking the place of the male and female vocals with backup horn section taking the place of the backup singers. Mmm, I love the bass part to that song. I’ve taken a couple of gospel songs from “The Fighting Temptations” film and am turning those into instrumentals, again with alto and tenor sax taking over for the male and female lead vocals and backup horn section in place of the choir. A cover of Willie Nelson’s “You were always on my mind” that’s more jazzed up with a sax solo and electric piano. There’s a few others that I can’t think of off the top of my head. It’s a fun hobby.

Man, that’s diversification. I feel like I mix it up when I add some Neil Young-type stuff to my usual mix of country, folk, and bluegrass. BTW, blues lyrics are easy. You only have to come up with about 8 lines for the whole song, then just repeat them over and over again, to wit (16 bars):
I got the teabagging blues, my balls are blue
I got the teabagging blues, my balls are blue
I got the teabagging blues, my balls are blue

You’re a bass player, right? Check out The Deepest End.
If you’re not familiar with Gov’t Mule, the band started out in 1994 as a side project for then Allman Brothers members Warren Haynes and Allen Woody who teamed up with drummer Matt Abts to explore the whole power trio concept.
Allen Woody died rather unexpectedly in 2000. The band considered breaking up, but the did a couple of “Deep End” projects featuring guest bassists that Woody admired. That whole project culminated in The Deepest End.
The Deepest End was recorded on one night in May of 2003 during the New Orleans Heritage and Jazz Festival, and features an array of guest bassist including Les Claypool, Dave Schools, Jack Cassady, Roger Glover, Rob Wasserman, Victor Wooten, Jason Newsted, George Porter Jr and Paul Jackson.
I mean, think about the last three. Jason Newsted of Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne fame, George Porter Jr. of the Funky Meters and Paul Jackson who’s most noted for his work with Herbie Hancock on the Head Hunters album. Can you get a more eclectic mix?
These guys are good enough to play whatever music they want to. And they do.
Catch DoctorFunk if you get the chance.
I don’t get the chance any more, but I did listen to a couple of MP3 samples. Their cover of the Spencer Davis/Stevie Winwood hit I’m a Man is intriguing. Come to think of it, speaking of Herbie Hancock, their arrangement has a very Chameleon-esque feel to it.
