The Washington State Democrats filed a complaint with the Public Disclosure Commission today asking them to investigate the Republican media firm Media Plus. Media Plus gets its ad time on credit from TV stations, and the Democrats believe this constitutes an illegal loan to Media Plus’ political clients.
The complaint follows on the heels of a different complaint filed at the federal level by Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress, Darcy Burner, whose lawyers alleged on Wednesday that Media Plus gave an illegal loan to Rep. Dave Reichert’s campaign by fronting him TV time.
Today’s press release from the Washington State Democrats, who have identified GOP candidates Dino Rossi, Rob McKenna (Attorney General), and Douglas Sutherland (Commissioner of Public Lands) as recipients of Media Plus’ loans, says:
“By purchasing their ads on credit, the campaigns of Republicans Dino Rossi, Rob McKenna, and Doug Sutherland gain an unmistakable advantage, relieving them of the requirement to actually ‘purchase’ media time and giving them a slush fund at the most crucial part of the campaign season,” said Dwight Pelz, Chair of the Washington State Democratic Party. “If Media Plus buys hundreds of thousands of dollars of advertising time ‘on credit’ for Republican candidates during the last week of the election, what happens when those candidates don’t win and can’t pay? This practice needs to end immediately.”

Our campaign finance laws are toothless. They won’t be found guilty until after the election, and they’ll pay a slap-on-wrist fine. The Bushevik-controlled FEC will suspend or set aside the fine and there’ll be no punishment at all. The penalty needs to be change so that major violators are stripped of any office they win by illegal means.

And You Thought $150,000 Of Clothes Was Rich
Well well, now it comes out the McCain campaign paid Palin’s hair stylist twice as much as they paid McCain’s foreign policy adviser. Well, you get what you pay for, I guess.
“WASHINGTON – An acclaimed celebrity makeup artist for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin collected more money from John McCain’s campaign than his foreign policy adviser. Amy Strozzi … was paid $22,800, according to campaign finance reports for the first two weeks in October. In contrast, McCain’s foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, was paid $12,500, the report showed.”

I’m a Democrat and think that this is all crap. Media Plus will not let one spot run that they do not have the money in-house for. I’ve worked with them at a TV station handling political. What everyone needs to understand is that just because the TV ads have been placed does not mean that they will run. Media Plus can always cancel the ad if they do not have the $$.

How stupid and desperate are wingnuts? How many Limbaugh-loving fools bought this story?

Roger Rabbit spews:
“The Drudge Report was in full ambulance-chaser mode last night when … they ran with a … story about a woman being mugged and mutilated for her pro-McCain views.
“This story ran like wildfire through the right wing blogosphere … as proof that, while McCain’s supporters may occasionally shout out violent epithets at campaign rallies, Obama’s followers … are much, much worse.
“Earlier today, … Fox News’ Executive Vice President, John Moody, wrote the following: ‘If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama …. If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.’
“Gee, I wonder which option Moody was rooting for. Never mind that … it was all a hoax, Moody’s assertion that voters would be justified in thinking Obama responsible for the criminal acts of a lone supporter is itself a form of race-baiting. You see, Obama can’t control them! Those blacks are going to be out of control if Obama wins. …
“Well, if only the uncovering of race-baiting meant the end of it, then there might be some silver lining to all of this. But we must not forget the glee with which Drudge offered up this October surprise, nor the subsequent outrage it sparked among his eager flock ….
“Now, Drudge is up and running with the hoax angle, exposing the world to the evils of partisan desperation race-baiting. … True, we all make mistakes. This one was a doozy.”
(Quoted from David Knowles at Political Machine under fair use.)
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Now we know what’s behind this bizarre story. It was supposed to be Drudge’s “October surprise.” Like everything else Republican this year, it misfired. If Moody is right, McCain’s campaign is over. Pesonally, I don’t think many voters will blame McCain for this hoax. And it won’t hurt Drudge because he’s been discredited so many times he has nothing left to lose.

Ditto to Brian’s comments @5. Reserving ad space is a common practice and Media Plus won’t run the ads unless they’re paid for up front. (HA reported that the DCCC reserved ad space for Darcy Burner months ago. Had all that money been paid up front at that time?? NO.)
This is simply a ploy by the D’s and, in particular, Darcy Burner to divert attention from her total lack of relevant public service experience. After being caught repeatedly lying to WA-08 voters about her imaginary economics degree, what’s left for her to do but file frivolous FEC claims?

@6 There’s more to this than a McCain campaign worker woman lying to police. See #7. My question is, who put her up to this? She doesn’t look bright enough to have concocted it by herself.

My favorite story of the campaign? Boy, that’ll be tough. Right now, what I’m thinking is that “list of 100 economists,” who presumably agreed with his economic horseshit, that McCain unveiled recently, only to discover that the national press CAN count and there were only 90 names on the list. Oh, what a night.
And of course Sarah Palin still runs on the “100 economists” line.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@9 Republican liars can’t seem to catch a break this year. Everything is backfiring on them. Do you suppose God is watching all their carrying on, and has had enough of their shenanigans? It almost seems that way.

Lest we forget, the Palins are giving their depositions in “Troopergate” this afternoon even as we write. What they said should hit the 5 o’clock news.
Steve spews:
My bet is that Palin is a one term governor. If she doesn’t get tossed out, she’ll decline to run for a second term. In two years her family will have a home in the lower 48 and she’ll continue what has now become her 2012 run.

The week ended on more sour economic news – a world-wide rescession forecast has the DJIA dropping another 312.30 points at the end of trading Friday, to 8378.35 points.
I updated my spreadsheet as this was another low-level benchmark, but I’m getting tired of repeating that the Bush economic performance is dismal, with a 20% drop in value of the DJIA over the eight years of the Bush administration. Even McCain admits that now, although he argued the opposite just a couple of months ago.
What really worries me is that the next benchmark, from a political perspective, would be the DJIA at the start of Clinton’s second term in office: 6,893.13. Sure, its a long drop between the current number of 8,378.95 and 6,893.13. But I didn’t think it would go below 10,000 either, and certainly not lower than 9,000, but look at where we are now. It doesn’t take all that many weeks of 300 point net drops in the DJIA to lose some 1,500 points, and even after the election we still have eight weeks of the Bush Presidency left – plus YEARS of cleanup work to do to try to salvage something out of this mess they left us with.

And in the meantime, Palin in an interview is echoing McCain’s comments today, and saying that the McCain campaign’s “number one problem is George Bush’s unpopularity”.
Oh, it’s so unfair! Why should those evil people unfairly try to link us to the leader of our party, who’s views we constantly supported until they became unpopular, so now we must try to put some distance between ourselves and him!
