Seattle’s own Rep. Jim McDermott has blogged on dailyKos today, commemorating the Iraq War’s second birthday on Saturday.
It is almost impossible to be coherent about the situation in Iraq. 1500 Americans dead. Over 10,000 maimed in mind and body. Too high a price for no increase in national security.
Rep. McDermott invites Seattle’s “peace community” to join him at rally this Saturday at noon, at the Seattle Center, before marching to the Westlake Center at 1:30. You are also welcome to join him at his 11th Annual Potato Festival fundraiser, 4:30 at Town Hall.

Democracy is breaking out all over in the middle east. Baghdad Jim is sure to believe that this would have happened if we hadn’t gone into Afghanistan and Iraq, but he probably also believes in the Easter Bunny.
It will be the usual crowd of peaceniks at the rally on Saturday. Marching is cheap. Got any real answers instead? Last time I looked, we haven’t been attacked since 9/11 (unless you count the anthrax attack). I feel safer with Lebanese marching in the streets, Iraqis voting, and Palestinians coming to terms with the terrorists in their midst.
Don spews:
Haven’t been attacked since 9/11? So the 1500-plus U.S. soldiers all died of old age?
Janet S spews:
On our soil, of course.
RonK, Seattle spews:
Janet — It’s apparent you don’t know McDermott’s record. (He supported US intervention in Afghanistan, opposed it in Iraq.) It’s apparent you haven’t read his post. (Why is it apparent? Read the post and find out!)
It’s apparent in hindsight that McDermott was factually correct in the assessments for which he was dubbed “Baghdad Jim”, while “Crawford George” was factually mistaken … don’t you agree?
And by your standard, it’s apparent Clinton was twice the President Bush is. (We weren’t attacked on US soil for 8 years after WTC I.)
We’ll see how things work out in Iraq, and Lebanon, and Palestine, and Syria, and Turkey, and Kurdistan, and Iran, and Jordan, and Saudi, and Kuwait. Hope for the best … but if trouble breaks out there, or Darfur or Korea or Taiwan or you-name-it, our ground forces are in no condition to help and our list of allies is shrinking away.
As for the Easter Bunny, I know Jim McDermott and Denny Hastert attended the same Bible college but it appears their paths diverged after that.

Does it matter where you’re standing when they kill you?

AWESOME!! Tis a thing of beauty to see someone imply something blatantly false (McDermott opposition to war in Iraq) and then criticize another for potentially believing in the Easter Bunny. Brings a tear to my eye.
If you want reality, Janet, you may want to understand several things about what’s happening in the Middle East. What should have been a defenseless position by the Syrians now has the support of Hizballah because our presence in Iraq has strengthened the position of those who have for years been preaching that America and Israel have imperialist intentions.
In addition, in the Palestinian territories, unlike what you may have been told, Palestinians are no more fed up with the terrorists in their midst than they were 10 years ago. And they’ve had elections before too. I truly hope you take the time to study some history. You’ll find out who’s really believing in the Easter Bunny.
Don spews:
Are we in Iraq for democracy? What happened to WMDs? To Iraq involvement in 9-11? What will be the reason for this war tomorrow or next week?
Mark spews:
Don @ 7
Please cite a specific comment by Bush or a senior WH official that says Iraq was involved in 9/11. (not saying it didn’t happen, but I don’t recall one)
Is it possible that you’re twisting this from what HAS been accurately said — that Iraq supported terrorists (e.g. Abu Nidal, payments to bombers’ families, etc.).
Chee spews:
janet@1. Flanders Field revised. In Afghanistan the poppies grow beneath the crosses row on row that mark their dead. Opium is deadly.

I don’t travel to Seattle very often, Don, but I heard that in Mac’s district people fly the flag of the UN and not of the United States of America? It is so believable. Is it true?
jsa on beacon hill spews:
swatter@10:
Yes, it’s true. We only fly the UN flag here.
And the tap water is spiked with LSD, so if you don’t feel like joining the frequent-flier club, make your coffee with bottled water.
We have giant parking lots at the city limits where you have to park your gasoline vehicle. If you don’t have an electic car, you have to hoof it or bicycle.
Capitalism has completely been abolished. All those big buildings downtown? They’re owned by a People’s Collective. I have been forced to let the homeless stay in my basement. That’s why you don’t see any of them sleeping under the bridges or in Pioneer Square anymore.
Gotta go. My shift as power for the pedi-bus through Chinatown and Beacon Hill starts in 30 minutes. I have great legs, so I should put them to use. From each, to each as my hero Karl Marx always said.
christmasghost spews:
JSA@11…..that’s a classic. But be sure to point out that ‘someone’ has slipped up because we all know that Seattle is the home base for “we hate big oil” and SOMEBODY keeps leaving ALL the lights on in EVERY big building downtown…i’m sure this must just be an oversight………

christmasghost@12:
I’ll mention it at the next meeting of Liberated Property Holdings Work Unit Section 9 (Financial District, Downtown, & Regrade). Wasting electricity does not serve the people! Down with the running dogs who allow salmon to be slaughtered for the vanity of lighting the skyline.

“What should have been a defenseless position by the Syrians now has the support of Hizballah because our presence in Iraq has strengthened the position of those who have for years been preaching that America and Israel have imperialist intentions.”
Wow! No wonder 1 million Lebanese citizens marched in Beruit against Syria control a week ago…control which is required for Hizballah to continue to be the major player in Beruit.

The lights heat the buildings. If they turn them off, it uses more energy to reheat the buildings, than it does to leave them on all the time.

oh boy, that blow hard Jim McDermatitis, is he really a doctor? LOL, he spoke on the floor of the house tonight, but he insisted the speaker call him Dr. McDermott. Psychiatrist? Now that is funny. I wonder if he analyzes himself. Why does watching these dems on cspan have to be so painful? First Baghdad Jim and then Barney Frank. Why do you Dems allow this freak show to continue?
