It can be awfully difficult figuring out where your congressman stands on the issues, especially if your congressman is Rep. Dave Reichert. Partially it’s the rambling inarticulations he passes off as oratory, and partially it’s because he tends to avoid any forum where he may be forced to address complex issues unscripted.
So it comes as no surprise that Reichert’s campaign has just announced that he will be a no-show at next week’s “A Conversation With Your Congressman” (singular) hosted by the Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans. Both Reichert and Rep. Jay Inslee were invited to take questions on four issues: the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, offshore outsourcing of American jobs, the Employee Free Choice Act labor law reform, and the estate tax. Only Inslee will be there to provide answers.
It’s a shame really, because this sounds like it would have been a wonderful opportunity for constituents to engage their representatives on these important issues, in a relatively nonpartisan setting.
This is not intended to be a political debate. In fact, this forum very deliberately seeks to avoid that, which is why election opponents were not invited. Each issue will be briefly summarized by experts on that topic, audience members will describe their personal experiences on the issue, and the congressmen will explain their positions and answer audience questions.
The format is intended to create an opportunity for our elected U.S. Representatives to listen to their constituents’ concerns, describe where they stand on important issues in a clear and substantive way, and respond directly to citizens’ questions — all outside the politically charged environment of an election debate.
Ah well. But then, we all know that Reichert is a coward. Either he’s afraid that he won’t be able to answer the questions, or he’s afraid that voters won’t like what they hear if he somehow manages to articulate his positions without resorting to a meandering anecdote about the Green River Killer.
If those of you in the 8th District are curious as to what it’s like to be represented by a congressman who’s not afraid to be confronted by his own constituents, go watch Rep. Inslee in action next Thursday, July 6, 6:30 pm at the North Bellevue Community Center, 4063 148th AVE. NE. Or elect Darcy Burner and find out what it’s like to have a smart, articulate, courageous representative, every day of the week.

Danger – multi-millionaires at large
I’ve always thought it was interesting that the mass murder of September 11 was allegedly committed by a multi-millionaire. We always say it was committed by a “terrorist” or by an “Islamic fundamentalist” or an “Arab”, but we never define Osama by his rightful title : multi-millionaire. Why have we never read a headline saying, “3,000 Killed by multi-millionaire” ? It would be a correct headline, would it not ?
Osama bin Laden has assets totaling at least $30m ; he is a multi-millionaire. So why isn’t that the way we see this person, as a rich fuck who kills people ? Why didn’t that become the reason for profiling potential terrorists ? Instead of rounding up suspicious Arabs, why don’t we say, “Oh my God, a multi-millionaire killed 3,000 people ! Round up the multi-millionaires ! Throw them all in jail ! No charges ! No trials ! Deport the millionaires !!”

This leads me to wonder: Where’s Reichert on the president’s drive to privatize Social Security? I would think that would be an important issue to his district. If Reichert hasn’t taken a clear stance then he needs to be smoked out.
If Reichert is a rubber stamp for Bush’s privatization direction then it would make sense for Darcy Burner to make this a high-profile issue. It’s a solid, middle-of-the-road, lunch bucket issue that sharply defines the difference between contemporary Republicans and Democrats.
Republicans want to gut benefits and give their Wall Street buddies a slice of the pie under the disingenuous guise of a funding “crisis.” Democrats stand for protecting the interests of the common man by reforming Social Security in sensible, moderate ways.
Let the professional wingers froth about the joys of gutting Social Security. A vast majority of the American electorate simply doesn’t accept that policy direction. That’s why Republicans in swing districts are being so coy. Simply put, they lose if they are aggressively “outed.”

http://sadlyno.com/archives/003124.html#more-3124
Only two weeks after earning the Democratic nomination in a mostly civil primary election, Jim Webb dialed up the rhetoric Tuesday, verbally carpet-bombing Sen. George Allen over differences the two have on flag burning.
Allen campaign manager Dick Wadhams had accused Webb of being “beholden to liberal Washington senators” because he was against the Allen-supported flag-burning amendment to the Constitution that died in the Senate on Tuesday.
Webb considered the comments to be an attack on his patriotism because he objects to tinkering with the First Amendment.
“George Felix Allen Jr. and his bush-league lapdog, Dick Wadhams, have not earned the right to challenge Jim Webb’s position on free speech and flag burning,” Webb spokesman Steve Jarding said in a press release. “Jim Webb served and fought for our flag and what it stands for, while George Felix Allen Jr. chose to cut and run.
“When he and his disrespectful campaign puppets attack Jim Webb, they are attacking every man and woman who served. Their comments are nothing more than weak-kneed attacks by cowards.”
Webb was a Marine in Vietnam, serving as a rifle-platoon leader and company commander. He received the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts, Jarding noted.
Wadhams said he was surprised that Webb was offended.
“I didn’t think anybody attacked his patriotism,” Wadhams said. “I don’t see how anybody could attack Jim Webb’s patriotism.”
“This is straight out of the Republican playbook … taking a candidate’s strength and trying to turn it into a weakness,” Denny Todd said. “It’s what Chris LaCivita did with Swift Boats against John Kerry.”
LaCivita helped orchestrate the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” attacks during the 2004 Bush campaign. He now works for Allen.
“It’s been said that Democrats aren’t willing to fight back in campaigns,” Denny Todd said. “Well, we’re willing. We’re not letting them get away with it.”
Jarding certainly held nothing back Tuesday when he launched Webb’s broadside.
“While Jim Webb and others of George Felix Allen Jr.’s generation were fighting for our freedoms and for our symbols of freedom in Vietnam, George Felix Allen Jr. was playing cowboy at a dude ranch in Nevada,” Jarding said. “People who live in glass dude ranches should not question the patriotism of real soldiers who fought and bled for this country on a real battlefield.”

Voted against homeland security measures recommended by the 9/11 Commission and the 2004 Intelligence Reform Law.
Voted against VA funding and extending healthcare to vets families.
Just before General Casey announced withdrawal plans, Reichert voted against the creation of a plan for withdrawal from Iraq.
Voted in favor of weakening House Ethics Committee rules.
Reichert voted against people and for the Bankruptcy Bill so people overwhelmed by medical bills may never recover.
Reichert voted to allow federal officials to use secret warrants to search library records and bookstore sales.
Voted consistently against protecting a woman’s right to choose. You like this, but a lot of people don’t.
Reichert voted against stem cell research. I know you like this too, but a lot of people don’t — like Nancy Reagan.
Reichert voted to cut funding for sewage treatment, leaving Carnation’s citizens with a $400 per month bill for clean water. Not good on local issues, either.
Reichert voted to allow nuclear waste to be stored at Hanford – “Surprisingly” said the P-I on June 1, 2005 – and voted for massive tax breaks for oil companies.

The marquee host of the barbecue is Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas — “Chairman Barton” — the powerful chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Under Chairman Barton, the House Energy and Commerce Committee has sat dormant, as Western lawmakers pried loose records and tried to get the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to investigate how Washingtonians were ripped off.

Why does darcy speak but say nothing?
She may say noting to you, but stem cell research, an Iraq strategy, support for vets and their families, bankruptcy protection for individuals when they need a fresh start. Those things say a lot to me, and a lot about Dave, who is against them all.

Theocracy, kidnapping, torturing, killing off due process, domestic spying, thoughtlessly voting with Bush’s “agenda”, breeding more terrorists, hypocracy, anti-science, anti-education, and cowboy diplomacy.
That is the package that comes with Reichert. He is a robot for Bush, he is not so bright, and when the debate going gets tough, Reichert cuts and runs. The 8th can do much, much better than Sheriff Dave.

5. No mercy for Republicans!

Good point. Nobody here would ever say one good thing about Dave. Their ideology is attack, attack, attack. If a conservative makes a point then switch topics quick and start with the smear all over again. It’s pathetic. They are all crying about Conservatives not being able to say good things about Dave but it’s just a cover up because they have absolutely nothing to say about Darcy.
What’s worse is Dave is being hammered by Republicans because he is not voting the way they want him to every single time. He has actually listened to the contituents in his district on more than one occassion. I’m not talking the individuals (like the nut jobs here) but trying to listen to the majority. He is in a pretty mixed district and it shows.
However you look here and it’s all rhetoric. Read this whole thread and look how fast the libruls flit from slam to slam without actually adding any substance. No you will get no discussion here. This is a slam blog. Goldy is a pretty good cat, and when he actually responds in his blog he’s pretty fair. Along similar lines, check out this recent Seattle Times story:
Feral rabbits continue to run amok in Woodland and Green Lake parks after a failed attempt to relocate them to a new home. . . .
The first relocation attempt, which was to have begun Jan. 15, proved to be too expensive to complete. . . . Another problem was warm spring weather. It’s best to capture rabbits in colder months when they mate less. But an early spring heat wave meant many rabbits were pregnant when captured.
The program required sterilizing the captured rabbits, which would have meant terminating the pregnancies. Although a handful of rabbits were born, the Parks Department thought it best to postpone the roundup until this fall, when the weather is cooler.
Such disregard for leporine reproductive rights is enough to make our hare stand on end. Just because they’re rabbits doesn’t mean they should be expected to breed like rabbits. There’s an animal rights movement and an abortion rights movement, but it’s a scandal how few people take animal abortion rights seriously.

However, if we are to revive our flagging democracy we’ve got to do a better job of building bridges with sane Republicans and independents. In Washington state we have an unusually strong history of bipartisan, nonideological problem solving. We need to rekindle that. That means debunking Grover Norquist’s argument that bipartisanship is akin to rape.
At least when dealing with state and local issues, we can’t always be flame throwers. We’ve got to be seen by the moderate middle as the practical problem solvers; the good neighbor ready to roll up his shirt sleeves and lend a hand.
Bottom line: I don’t see it as an either-or equation. We need flame throwers AND bridge builders.

“Most Americans believe the system needs change, but not in the immediate future. Very few reform proposals engender public support. Americans who are not nearing retirement age (under 50) are more supportive of changes to the system, but also skeptical Social Security will pay them when they retire. There is at best mixed support for the idea of private investment accounts. Social Security reform is not currently a high-priority issue for many Americans.”

Do not be fooled by their attempts to pretend that the issue has gone away. It is very much on the White House’s radar screen, and if they keep control of both houses of Congress it will be fought out again next year.

So, we must agree that this is not “accusing” Reichert. It is simply stating the fact. The only problem for Reichert is that the voters in the 8th are not, for the most part, PNAC Republicans. They differ from the GOP agenda in many ways, but Reichert has shown no real independent leadership, and even admits that he votes as told.
In fact, I think it is fair to say that the Reichert’s obedience to the Wingnuts and their agenda will come back to bite him in the ass in November. Voters are sick and tired of an incompetent president with a corrupt “yes boss” congress.
dj spews:
Here is a perfect example of how Reichert is out of touch with voters in the 8th CD. It is widely recognized that folks in the 8th are strongly pro-environment.
When it came to HR39830–a bill that helped the oil industry and removed restrictions on environmental protection–Reichert followed his marching orders and cast the deciding vote in favor of the bill.
When it came to HR 4241–a bill that privitized public lands (national forests, national parks, etc.)–Reichert followed his marching orders and cast the deciding vote in favor of the bill.
Reichert has voted on several bills that would have allowed drilling in ANWR. (Even though he claims to be opposed to such drilling). Apparently his personal views and the views of voters in the 8th are less important than the GOP leadership’s orders.
No wonder the house Republican leadership loves him—he is a fucking sheep, who does what he is told.

Bush’s job approval rating fell to 35% according to a TIME poll taken this week. It had been 37% in March, and hugely down from the 53% early in 2005). On the economy, 36% approve of Bush’s performance, compared with 39% three months earlier.
Continued anger about the situation in Iraq and impatience about America’s direction harpoons Bush’s popularity. In the TIME survey, 66% said the country is on the wrong track, vs. the 28% (all of whom post at HorsesAss) who said it’s going in the right direction. Those numbers have tanked since March, when the poll recorded a 60% to 34% split. The new Iraqi government won’t save Bush, because the when asked if it could build a stable and reasonably democratic society, 48% of those surveyed said no, while 39% continued to wallow in ignorance.
Congress pisses off respondents more than it did three months ago, too. Only 31% approve, down a ski slope from 39% in March. Asked whether they would be more likely to vote for the Republican or Democratic candidate in the district where they live if the election were held today, 47% said Democrat and 35% said Republican, a two-point improvement for Democrats.

Oh, I’m all in favor of that, if we can find any. I have lots of Republican friends. That is, I have friends who call themselves “Republicans” but bear little resemblance to the majority of people calling themselves Republicans these days.
I think there are periods of history when human behavior seems irrational which can be explained in terms of emotional energy building up over time, then erupting into an outpouring of aggressive acting out. This would go a long way to explain the French Revolution and aftermath, the American Civil War, August 1914, and the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. I think it also explains the Nixon era, and what’s happening now. Clearly, there is today in America a rightwing movement involving millions of people who are behaving irrationally, are emotion-driven, and seem to be acting out long-repressed frustrations.
And I don’t think there’s anything that anyone can do about it except wait it out. Like the common cold, it has to run its course, and there is no cure. But in time this affliction, too, shall pass.

Well actually I don’t really think. I just call my handlers and they do all the thinking for me. That’s the way I like it. How’s my hair?

GDumb sez: “In Washington state we have an unusually strong history of bipartisan, nonideological problem solving.”
Cough, cough, ack, psst, pfft, hack
That’s amazing Green Dumb, since for most of the time your party has been the one in control. And the few times our party got in you all threw legislative hissy fits when things didn’t go your way; you know tax and spend at a higher rate.

Microsoft apparently does make a distinction between and executive and a general manager, program manager, team lead, engineer, technical specialist, lead geek or janitor. They list executives on their web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/press.....?group=A-D
For someone who was merely a Program Manager (which cannot even be verified at that) or whatever title her apologists are using to explain her false claim, to call herself an executive is quite a promotion indeed.
From her own website:
“Darcy grew up in a military family. She worked hard in school, graduated at the top of her class and put herself through Harvard. After graduation, Darcy worked for 12 years in the high tech sector – including as an executive at Microsoft.”

The Ray-Gun Initiative
Also called “Star Wars”, SDI, the Strategic Defense Initiative, the Upholster and …
Hogwash.
The main reason computer people should take an interest in this is simple. Only we know how funny the thing really is:
All of the software has to work perfectly together, the first time.
Most of the different space weapons talked about would really be more effective against targets on the ground than against fast-moving rockets. Think of it, oncoming missile speed: say 15,000 MPH, rising intercept missile speed, maybe 10,000 MPH.
How’s your tennis?
Can you hit a tennis ball fired out of a cannon?
In other words, Star Wars is a really great offensive system, as scientific conferences stated at the time.
