I’m filling in again for Frank Shiers this week, Weds thru Fri, 9PM to 1AM on Newsradio 710-KIRO.
9PM: Hey, it’s only dead animals, right?
If the FDA expected this pet food recall story to fly under the radar and out of the headlines, they weren’t counting on the determination of pet-loving bloggers to get to the truth. Two of the bloggers leading the way will join me for the hour to help us get to the nitty gritty of this slowly unfolding scandal. Ben Huh of the local pet blog Itchmo will join me in-studio, and Christie Keith of Pet Connections will talk to us by phone.
10PM: Is Seattle ready to elect a (gasp) Republican?
Um, no. But that isn’t stopping self-described Republican Jim Nobles from leaping headlong into the crowded race to replace retiring Seattle City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck. Jim joins me in the studio for the hour to field your questions, and to attempt to explain to me exactly how a nice, smart guy like him comes to be a Republican. (And stay one.)
Plus more fascinating conversation! Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).
Coming up: Local writer Clark Humphrey joins me Thursday at 10PM to talk about his book, Vanishing Seattle, and my favorite Republican, Gen. JC Christian of the blog Jesus’ General joins me Friday at 11PM to give us his peculiar insight into the minds of the extreme far-right.

The most urgent business for the Senate is to eliminate recesses and stay in session 365 days a year until Bush is out of office. If this inconveniences GOP senators, they can complain to George W. Bush about it. Since Bush has no respect for either the Constitution or the Senate’s prerogatives as a co-equal branch of government, the obvious solution is to authorize no more recesses. That will put a stop to Bush’s abusive “recess appointments.”
Roger Rabbit spews:
And if this necessary change to Senate procedures pisses off GOP senators, Harry Reid’s response should be, “If you want your recesses back, you’ll have to give us enough Republican votes to remove him from office.”
headless lucy spews:
George W. Bush is an asshole.
Richard Pope spews:
Roger Rabbit @ 3 & 4
Actually, the GOP should have done that when they controlled the Senate. If the Democrats wanted to filibuster a nomination, keep the Senate in session 24/7 while the debate was going on. That is how the filibusters against civil rights bills were broken.
Senate rules only allow a Senator one speech per debate. The longest speech ever given was just over 24 hours by Strom Thurmond. Depends comes in handy on such occasions! They could have done the “debate” on judicial nominations in the evening, after considering regular business. Would have been a lot of fun to watch!
Right now, Bush has less than two years left, so all vacancies other than judgeships can be filled by recess appointments. Hell, I bet Bush can even find an attorney or two willing to accept a judicial recess appointment until January 2009. Doesn’t the job pay pretty good?
Richard Pope spews:
And it couldn’t hurt Bush’s popularity either. The last two general elections, I have gotten a considerably higher percentage of the vote than George Bush got from the same precincts in November 2004. And much higher than what Mike McGavick got in November 2006 from the same territory.

@21 “Of course you democrats deny our fighting men and women their votes so it is to be expected.”
You got the pronoun wrong but otherwise your sentiment is right — it’s an outrage (not to mention a felony) what Republicans did to our brave soldiers:
“The Republican National Committee has a special offer for African-American soldiers: Go to Baghdad, lose your vote.
“A confidential campaign directed by GOP party chiefs in October 2004 sought to challenge the ballots of tens of thousands of voters in the last presidential election, virtually all of them cast by residents of Black-majority precincts. Files from the secret vote-blocking campaign were obtained by BBC Television …. They were attached to emails accidentally sent by Republican operatives to a non-party website.
“One group of voters wrongly identified by the Republicans as registering to vote from false addresses: servicemen and women sent overseas.
“Here’s how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in envelopes marked, ‘Do not forward’, to be returned to the sender. These letters were mailed to servicemen and women, some stationed overseas, to their US home addresses. The letters then returned to the Bush-Cheney campaign as ‘undeliverable.’
“The lists of soldiers of ‘ndeliverable’ letters were transmitted from state headquarters … to the RNC in Washington. The party could then challenge the voters’ registration and … prevent their absentee ballots being counted.
“One target list was comprised exclusively of voters registered at the Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station. … [See this scrub sheet at http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.g.....038;size=o ] …
“The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the Republican’s national Research Director and Deputy Communications chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and other party leaders. Attached were spreadsheets marked, ‘Caging.xls.’ Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and their addresses. A check of the demographics of the addresses on the ‘caging lists,’ as the GOP leaders called them indicated that most were in African-American majority zip codes. …
“The Republican National Committee in Washington refused … to respond to the BBC discovery. … The party has refused to say why it would mark soldiers as having ‘bad addresses’ subject to challenge when they had been assigned abroad. … Setting up such a challenge list would be a crime under federal law.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: What kind of low-life scumbags would take away the vote of soldiers deployed to Iraq? Republican low-life scumbags, that’s who. If you are a Republican, you have no morals, because you support these bastards.
N.B.: The “Tim Griffin” mentioned in the story is the same Tim Griffin who was appointed interim U.S. Attorney (without Senate confirmation, during a recess) to replace Bud Cummins, the U.S. Attorney in Arkansas who was fired in “Prosecutor-gate.” Because the “caging” operation was a criminal act under federal law, we now have a potential felon enforcing federal criminal laws in Arkansas (and, presumably, rigging elections there).
Roger Rabbit spews:
A firing squad is too good for the Republican scumbags who denied our fighting men and women their vote. Lowering them slowly into vats of boiling oil would be more fitting.*

“Bush’s New US Attorney a Criminal?
“by GREG PALAST
“March 7, 2007—There’s only one thing worse than sacking an honest prosecutor. That’s replacing an honest prosecutor with a criminal.
” … Timothy Griffin, … the President’s pick as US Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas …, according to BBC Television, was the hidden hand behind a scheme to wipe out the voting rights of 70,000 citizens prior to the 2004 election.
“Key voters on Griffin’s hit list: Black soldiers and homeless men and women. Nice guy, eh? Naughty or nice, however, is not the issue. Targeting voters where race is a factor is a felony crime under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. …
“In October 2004, our investigations team at BBC Newsnight received a series of astonishing emails from Mr. Griffin, then Research Director for the Republican National Committee. He didn’t mean to send them to us. They were highly confidential memos meant only for RNC honchos. …
“And we dug in, decoding and mapping the voters on what Griffin called ‘Caging’ lists — spreadsheets with 70,000 names of voters marked for challenge. Overwhelmingly, these were Black and Hispanic voters from Democratic precincts.
“The Griffin scheme was sickly brilliant. We learned that the RNC sent first-class letters to new voters in minority precincts marked, ‘Do not forward.’ Several sheets contained nothing but soldiers; other sheets, homeless shelters. Targets included the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida and that city’s State Street Rescue Mission. Another target: Edward Waters College, a school for African-Americans.
“If these voters were not currently at their home voting address, they were tagged as ‘suspect’ and their registration wiped out, or their ballot challenged and not counted. Of course, these ‘cages’ captured thousands of students, the homeless and those in the military, though they are legitimate voters. …
” … [S]oldiers … who sent in absentee ballots, when challenged, would lose their vote. And they wouldn’t even know it. …
“But it is illegal to challenge voters en masse where race is an element in the targeting. …
“Griffin … ducked our cameras, but his RNC team tried to sell us the notion that the caging sheets were, in fact, not illegal voter hit lists, but a roster of donors to the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign. Republican donors at homeless shelters?
“Over the past weeks, Griffin has said he would step down if he had to face Congressional confirmation. However, the President appointed Griffin to the law enforcement post using an odd little provision of the USA Patriot Act that could allow Griffin to skip Congressional questioning altogether.
“Therefore, I have a suggestion for Judiciary members. … Maybe Conyers should hold a line-up of suspected vote thieves … [to] identify the perpetrators. That should be easy in the case of the Caging List Criminal. He’d only have to look for the guy wearing a new shiny lawman’s badge.”

They targeted precincts based on how heavily Democrat they voted. It just so happens that most of the really heavy Democrat precincts in Florida are really heavy African-American. Since the targeting was based on political voting trends, not on racial composition, it was not illegal — even if it had a disparate racial impact.
The same result would happen in Florida if the Democrats targeted heavy Republican precincts. Almost all of the affected voters in such an instance would be white.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@32 Nobody believes the “US govt” staged 9/11. If it was staged, it was staged by the Republican Party, who are not the “US govt.” They are mere usurpers who stole two elections. Bush names “Swift Boat” donor ambassador, outflanking Congress
By The Associated Press
WASHINGTON — President Bush named Republican fundraiser Sam Fox as U.S. ambassador to Belgium today, using a maneuver that allowed him to bypass Congress where Democrats had derailed Fox’s nomination.
Democrats had denounced Fox for his 2004 donation to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group’s TV ads, which claimed that Sen. John Kerry exaggerated his military record in Vietnam, were viewed as a major factor in the Massachusetts Democrat losing the election.
Recognizing Fox did not have the votes to obtain Senate confirmation, Bush withdrew the nomination last month. Today, with Congress out of town for a spring break, the president used his power to make recess appointments to put Fox in the job without Senate confirmation.
This means Fox can remain ambassador until the end of the next session of Congress, effectively through the end of the Bush presidency.
It is about time Bush stood up to congress. Yes baby, yes!!!!!!

“As the son of a man who fled Europe to find freedom and a better life, I am especially humbled by the opportunity to return to that continent as this nation’s representative,” he said.

Bush’s Shadow Army
“The often overlooked subplot of the wars of the post-9/11 period is their unprecedented scale of outsourcing and privatization. From the moment the US troop buildup began in advance of the invasion of Iraq, the Pentagon made private contractors an integral part of the operations. Even as the government gave the public appearance of attempting diplomacy, Halliburton was prepping for a massive operation. When US tanks rolled into Baghdad in March 2003, they brought with them the largest army of private contractors ever deployed in modern war. By the end of Rumsfeld’s tenure in late 2006, there were an estimated 100,000 private contractors on the ground in Iraq–an almost one-to-one ratio with active-duty American soldiers. “

My position on this will not be news to HA regulars, as I’ve said many times on this board that I believe Clinton deserved to be impeached for debasing the office in the manner he did … but I’ve also said that, in retrospect, he was a pretty good president.
You see, Kevin Carns, that’s the difference between you and me — my party loyalty stops where illegality and abuse of power begin. You, on the other hand, exhibit exactly the same temperament and character as the German hero-worshippers who blindly followed their Fuhrer into limitless depths of immorality and debauchery.

Like hell he didn’t.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@51 “no one is going to prosecute him”
You may well be right about this, Richard. Democratic politicians are more interested in solving our nation’s pressing problems than pursuing justice for the innumerable crimes of the Bush era. Luckily for criminals like Griffin, they are more restrained than the ordinary liberal citizenry, who — make no mistake — are in a lynch-mob mood where the Bushie crowd is concerned.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@51 “What Tim Griffin needs is a recess appointment … ”
No, what he needs is a striped suit. And I’m sure sorry that I voted for you, Richard! Rest assured I won’t make that mistake again. Your support for this racist slime bucket who feloniously took away the voting rights of black soldiers in Iraq is intolerable.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@53 No, Roger Rabbit didn’t say that, and if I catch the motherfucker who is hijacking my screen name he’ll wish he was never born.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@55 You called it right, bro.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@57 Tim Griffin ran a GOP operation that targeted black voters (including soldiers) for voter challenge. That’s a federal crime, and he’s a criminal — not to mention a racist piece of shit. By proclaiming your support for him, you and Pope demonstrate beyond any reasonable doubt that you are of the same ilk as Griffin — racist slimeballs who disrespect the rights of your fellow citizens and cheerleaders for GOP election fraud. I piss on all 3 of you.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@58 Don’t worry, Dufus. Democrats have loooong memories. Trust me, a time will come when a Democratic president will do the same thing to you guys; and when your side bitches about it, we’ll simply whisper “hypocrites” in your ears.
Roger Rabbit spews:
We WILL get back in power; and we absolutely are going to take the gloves off.

I wouldn’t put it past the bacterium who hijacked my screen name to steal my DD-214 and tell people he’s a veteran. That’s why I keep my DD-214 under armed guard.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@64 Don’t worry, Dufus. We’ll have plenty of votes. After Jan. 2009, Congress will be 80% Democratic, and there will be a hell of a lot of unemployed Republican ex-federal employees.
ArtFart spews:
All of the above sturm und drang aside, one thing I feel good about is that the Brits who were being held in Iran are safely on their way home. Regardless of exactly what happened, or what the various parties involved claim happened, or whose butt was on which side of which boundary, not to mention how many political figures are going to claim credit for getting them freed, it’s certainly a relief to them and their families that their ordeal is over with.
Roger Rabbit spews:
The Republican law firms should be able to place a lot of the Republican lawyers, though — there’ll be plenty of defense work for those who are not themselves defendants.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@101 The whole thing was scripted by the Iranians, Art. And they seem to have a better sense than Bush of how far they can go and where to back off. Bush is going to take his whole party down with him, and not a few GOP congressmen and senators are starting to get very nervous about covering their own butts.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Meanwhile, John McCain is imploding and, as Guiliani is unlikely to survive scrutiny, the chances are improving of the GOPers nominating a wingnut who will poll no better than 35% in Nov. 2008.

“No profit seen from proposed Sonics arena, says Renton
“By Jim Brunner and Ralph Thomas
“Seattle Times staff reporters
“A proposed $500 million Sonics arena in Renton probably would not turn a profit for the state or King County, according to an economic analysis released by Renton officials Wednesday.
“The arena could generate between $78 million and $152 million in new taxes over 25 years for the state, King County and local jurisdictions, the report by Seattle-based Berk and Associates says. Taxpayers are being asked to contribute at least $300 million toward the arena’s construction. …
“But the higher end of the study’s projections assumes the arena would attract a National Hockey League team by 2015, in addition to bringing in many other new events, from corporate meetings to concerts and ice-skating championships. …
“The study also may call into question how much Renton can contribute to the project. Sonics owner Clay Bennett informally has suggested Renton may need to contribute $100 million. But the study says the arena would generate only $20.5 million in new taxes for the city over 25 years. …
“Generally speaking, independent research by sports economists has concluded that arena studies funded by proponents of stadiums tend to exaggerate benefits. … Rodney Fort, a professor of sports economics at Washington State University, said the Renton study might be overstating the tax revenues it claims. … Fort said it appears the arena would not generate enough new taxes annually to cover bond payments. …
“House Speaker Frank Chopp has expressed disdain for the proposal, and Rep. Ross Hunter, chairman of the House Finance Committee, said he’s heard almost zero interest from fellow Democrats.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Talk about a misleading headline! “No profit” is not the same thing as LOSING money; and the proponents’ own optimistic report says it would LOSE $148 to $228 million for taxpayers. A more objective calculation by a UW professor says it won’t even pay the mortgage. I have a better idea. Instead of giving the Sonics a $500 million arena, give them this: http://tinyurl.com/296tmg

Romney Is A Bullshitter
“‘Longtime Hunter’ Romney Went on Two Trips
“By GLEN JOHNSON
“AP
“BOSTON (April 5) – In boasting about his lifelong experience as a hunter, Mitt Romney may have shot himself in the foot. The Republican presidential contender has told audiences on several occasions … that he has been a longtime hunter. But it turns out he has been on only two hunting trips. …
“In a question-and-answer session Tuesday in Keene, N.H., Romney spoke of his experience with hunting in a manner that suggested a close affiliation with the sport. ‘I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life,’ he told a man sporting a National Rifle Association cap.
“Yet the former Massachusetts governor’s hunting experience came during two trips at the bookends of his 60 years: as a 15-year-old, when he hunted rabbits with his cousins on a ranch in Idaho, and last year, when he shot quail on a fenced game preserve in Georgia. … An aide … confirmed Romney had been hunting only on those occasions in his life.”

Now let’s review the GOP nomination race:
John McCain is raising very little money, is supporting an unpopular war, and is distrusted by the GOP faithful.
Rudy Giuliani has been married 3 times, his former business partner is heading for jail, and his business has Mafia connections.
Mitt Romney is raising most of his money from Wall Street sharks, and is a flip flopper and liar.
With all of the so-called GOP “moderates” stumbling, the chances are increasing that Republicans will end up nominating some unelectable wingnut like Gingrich or Brownback. B-R-I-N-G I-T O-N !!! Democrats will win EVERY state outside the Confederacy, and the fake patriots can have that place. Man I’m going to ENJOY this!!!

Hi, Puddybud.
I could easily argue that your side contains both the Marxists and the Facists using much the same reasoning. Both wanted control over the personal lives of individuals, and both tended to scapegoat particular minorities.
My point was that when you get far enough out on the fringes, the extremes start looking more like each other than they do anyone closer to the middle. But I’m sure you realized that.
And of course I’ve read Galatians. The whole book, not just a couple of chapters. I don’t preach that way for the simple reason that it doesn’t work. Remember that Paul’s letter was preaching to the converted. Preaching Bible verses to non-Christians is one of the dumber things that we do. Saying that the Bible says something and therefore a non-Christian should believe it is likely to get the answer “So what?” Living a better life, being a more giving person, showing a difference in your life is a far better (not to mention more effective) way of preaching.
Beyond this should go off-blog. Again, I invite you to contact me.
The other point made in my post, which I’m also sure you caught, is that apparently we have someone not just impersonating Roger, but Janet S as well. It may be two people, but I’m figuring it’s the same person.
John Barelli spews:
Oh, and Puddybud? Before you start talking about someone else having a short memory, you might want to go back an re-read some of Roger’s posts regarding personal ownership of firearms.
He’s in favor of it.
The argument that some liberals have against handgun ownership is a valid one, based more on practical necessity rather than personal rights. This is why we tend to be somewhat divided on the issue.
If you look at Great Britain, with what most folks consider a strong democratic tradition and similar ethnic and social problems, but with the addition of strong anti-gun laws, you find a homicide rate (per 1000) of roughly one fifth ours. Other violent crime rates are also lower than ours.
NewsMax and the NRA have actually tried to make a claim that the Canadian crime rate was actually higher than the US, but to do that they had to go to some rather dubious sources, and include non-violent property crimes in the Canadian numbers. Essentially, they cooked the books.
Not surprising, as their stories were not actually intended to convince anyone, but to bolster their readers and members.
Back to the point, for myself, and many other liberals, the painful decision is between accepting a higher death rate, including many innocent people, and a reduction of personal freedom. I’ll choose to go with the personal liberty, even knowing the cost.
If enough people here decide that the problem is great enough to require a Constitutional amendment, I’ll re-visit the issue, but until then, personal liberty and the Constitution trump other considerations.

Good point, but you have the added factors of a more homogeneous population and other factors that tend to make Switzerland a less useful comparison than other countries.
Now, if you wanted to propose that all able-bodied adults were required to join a militia and receive training in the handling of firearms, our homicide and violent crime rates might well drop down near Switzerland’s.
A good article on this was written by a pro-gun-ownership attorney by the name of Stephen Halbrook who summarized by saying:
Ref: http://www.stephenhalbrook.com.....swiss.html
Still, even though I tend to agree that stronger gun laws might reduce the overall homicide rate (as it is much harder to kill someone with a knife or club than with a gun, and even harder to accidentally kill someone that way), I must side with the Constitution and personal liberty.
