I’m on the air again today, filling in for Ken Schram on KOMO 1000’s The Commentators, 10AM to 2PM. Tune in to hear me and John Carlson go at it on a number of hot button issues:
1oAM – Why won’t anybody challenge Greg Nickels for mayor? You know… anybody of course, except Dan Savage, who joins us at the top of the hour to promote his alleged run for the office.
11AM – Is Justice Antonin Scalia a “homophobe”? And even if so, should Rep. Barney Frank have said it? What are the limits of religious tolerance?
12PM – Should convicted felons be allowed to vote? WA state has some of the most restrictive felon voter laws in the nation. A bill before the legislature might change that.
1PM – Should WA state ban online poker… and if so, is it even technically possible to enforce the law?
Troll spews:
Is it a coincidence that the representatives who are most against online gambling, also receive the largest donations from Casino-Americans?
Mr. Cynical spews:
I doubt seriously if Scalia is afraid of gays…especially rancid, mouthy ones like Barney Fife.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@4 More commonly, gay people who get beaten up with baseball bats or steel pipes tend to believe that thugs who do such things are bigots and homophobes.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@1 Is that a fact, or did you peel that off the bathroom wall? You got a source for this assertion? Besides your fantasy comic book collection, I mean?
Roger Rabbit spews:
@2 Clearly, Rep. Frank isn’t afraid of mouthy, rancid judges who refuse to recuse themselves when they should.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@5 We don’t need this bill. Extortion is already against the law. Boeing should have been jailed a long time ago.
KOMOphobe spews:
In this corner, wearing Scalia’s trunks and sitting in Scalia’s stool … Governor John Carlson.
And in this corner, sounding like Barney Frank … David Goldstein. Who tells the KOMOphobic world he doesn’t have a gun and wouldn’t have a gun in his child’s home. That’s because his child has the gun.
As alert HA readers surely remember, Goldy’s proud that his daughter’s a straight shooter who packs heat.

It’s been another wild week in the Dan Savage Nation. Fear not if you forgot to cash in from the booming Obamaconomy, because help is on the way from the Savage Stranger:

Just heard that idiot John Carlson on the radio. Poor John, claiming that there has been no global warming since 1998 and tryiunbg to get away with being a lying SOB – yeah, 1998, that was the warmest year on record. So what?
It is amazing that a fool like Carlson could make such a pathetically stupid comment.
Doesn’t Carlson know the diffrence between trends in data and a single data point? What a complete maroon!
By the way, idiot global warming denier Carlson, the decade of 1998-2007 was the warmest on record and 11 of the last 13 years were the warmest years on record.
Cherry-picking a single record year and claiming that global warming is not happening since then simply shows how incredibly STUPID you and the global warming flat-earthers really are.

12: Hate to interrupt your spasm and orgasm, but every one of your shreiking shrill gorebasmic groans is in dispute, starting with the canard that 1998-was-the-warmest-year-on-record … a phrase used so often and thoughtlessly it should be on speed dial.
The warmest years on record were the dust-bowl 1930s, and the “record” started a mere geologic minute before that, at the end of the Little Ice Age, c. 1850. Not much of a record before that, aside from the Greenland cores that devastate Gore’s Global Catastrophe catechism.
Cherry-picking data from heat-sink recording stations, almost all of them less than 150 years old, is a shameless way to load an argument. Shameful, too, was the recent attempt to claim that a recent October was the warmest-on-record, a shrieking claim made possible only by substituting September data for October’s. Etc.

Yesterday Dave Ross, a lefty little Mercer Island proletarian elitist, issued a pro forma call for a panacea, regulation. Ah yes, if only Bush had pushed Barney toward regulatory oversight of Fannie and Freddie — back when Representative Frank said or implied that it was almost wacist (racist) to suggest that Mae and Mac were messed up — there’d be no manic recession now.
Actually, both Democrats and Frankophobes like me believed that affordable housing was the American dream. The Carter-Clinton Community Reinvestment Acts and the Republican candidate for president in 2004 wanted government to push business to erase their red lines and cut corners, to get citizens and non-citizens into homes. Thomas Woods Jr., a von Mises-Hayek conservative, writes that regulation could not regulate against political consensus.
And then there’s this from New York Review, 12 February:
“The Obama team has not yet announced its thinking about how to reregulate the financial community once the economy is righted again. The team of economists headed by Lawrence Summers, the former Treasury secretary (1999–2001), were, after all, themselves supporters of financial deregulation in the 1990s when most of them were members of the Clinton administration. As the Times’s series notes, Rubin, who preceded Summers as Treasury secretary (1995–1999), Summers, then his deputy, and Greenspan opposed regulating derivatives. In 1999, Rubin and Summers supported the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, the New Deal restriction separating investment and commercial banking.
“In fact, with the blessings of the Clinton administration and Greenspan, commercial banks were already engaging in many of the more aggressive activities of investment banks; and investment banks, along with hedge funds, private equity firms, and other institutions, as we have seen, were making the loans once the province of commercial banks through purchases and packaging of mortgage-backed obligations.”
Think about it.

That link goes to a think tank who expert is listed as having a PhD, but not in what discipline. If you look at his job history, it appears he has a writing background, not a science background, so I’m a bit surprised he “found” this error.
I know we all wish science and finance was intuitive so we could all just “know” it because it feels right, but data and math and research and experiments must happen. Climate Change/Global Warming is real and must be dealt to be able to feed all of the people of the future.

Geez, all this hub-bub about global warming.
Here’s what you need to know.
Q: Does ice melt above 32 degrees F.?
A: Yes.
Q: Since 1970 have the polar ice caps grown in size, stayed about the same or shrunk?
A: Shrunk.
So, if the massive polar ice caps are melting, then what can you deduce is the cause?
Here’s a link to JPL and NASA. They base their analysis on SCIENTIFIC evidence. Not whatever Boss Limbaugh orders them to believe.
