Wal-Mart Mobilizes Against Democrats
The Wall Street Journal reports that Wal-Mart, the rabidly anti-union discount retailer, has begun mobilizing its department heads and store managers against Sen. Obama, warning that a Democratic victory in November could make it easier to unionize the company.
I’ve read elsewhere (in a recently published book I obtained from the public library) that Wal-Mart budgets about 8% of gross sales for store staffing, compared to an average of 12% in the retail industry. Wal-Mart store managers can earn $150,000 to $200,000 a year, but most of that is bonus — their base salary is only $50,000 — which is closely tied to staffing costs … they make moe money if their store comes in below budget for personnel costs, and risk being demoted or fired if they exceed the staffing budget.
This creates very powerful incentives for store managers to cut personnel costs to the bone — often by illegal means such as forcing employees to work off the clock, i.e. work extra hours for free. Another tactic of managers for fattening their pay by reducing personnel costs is by keeping employees’ hours below a certain level so they can’t qualify for company benefits — which has the side effect of forcing minimum wage workers to work part time, further reducing their incomes.
Meanwhile, the company’s national headquarters tells the world it has strict policies against off-clock work, as it tries to head off public criticism and avoid consumer boycotts, but it keeps in place the policies that have encouraged abusive practices in its stores.
Michael Hood at BlatherWatch has been speculating for months that KIRO will soon be moving to an all-sports format. I wonder how long this gig will last for all the local political talkers on AM.

FBI Settles Anthrax Suit for $5.8 Million; New Suspect Commits Suicide
According to news reports this morning, the DoJ has paid former government scientist Steven Hatfill $5.8 million to settle his invasion of privacy lawsuit against the FBI, and a colleague of Hatfill’s, Dr. Bruce E. Ivins, committed suicide on Tuesday after learning he was about to be indicted in the 2001 anthrax attacks and prosecutors would seek the death penalty against him.
Investigators shifted their focus from Hatfill to Ivins after the FBI director replaced the leadership of the investigative team in 2006.
Scientific evidence has indicated all along the killer anthrax could have come only from the tightly-controlled federal lab where Hatfill and Ivins worked, indicating the crimes were committed by someone with access to the lab’s anthrax samples.
A story on MSNBC suggests that McCain is motivated by personal ambition and will do anything to become president, including compromising principles he has frequently stated over the years.
In other words, the G.O.P. Party candidate is an unprincipled hack.

That wasn’t my take on the story. I think the black guy in the mask was intending for people to think he was a white racist wanting to kill black babies. His motive? Who knows. Maybe to add proof to the idea that racism is all-pervasive and real, when in fact it’s black people themselves that are holding themselves back, then blaming it on racism. That’s why I’m skeptical when I hear about a noose left on a professor’s door handle, or graffiti left on a car, or a black church burnt down, or other supposed hate crimes. I think in many instances, it’s probably the “victim” themselves that committed the act in order to gain: sympathy; money; an excuse for something … The list is endless, but I think it’s fake hate crimes are more common than we know.
That’s why I’m VERY skeptical about this Vancouver graffiti case.
Yesterday’s state supreme court ruling that teachers have a privacy right to not have their names released to news media in connection with unsubstantiated allegations of sexual exploitation of students has upset the state’s media, who apparently feel “accused” is the same as “guilty.”
I don’t know how many manipulative students use false accusations against teachers to terrorize school administrators and teachers, but I have no doubt they’re out there. You couldn’t get me to teach if my name could be published in the fishwrapper simply because some student with a chip on his shoulder decided to retaliate because I exercised authority to control the classroom.
If this ruling had gone the other way, I have little doubt that good people would have been deterred from entering the teaching profession, and some good teachers would have walked away from teaching.
Some risks just aren’t worth it. What the newspapers wanted would have made teaching equivalent to walking unarmed through downtown alleys at night.

McCain’s Racist Ad
The McCain ad featuring pictures of Obama, Britney, and Paris is really clever in a sick, twisted way. Black man, white girls — get it? McCain’s biggest problem is overcoming the apathy of his party’s voters, and this ad should arouse their racist instincts.
It’s a more sophisticated version of the Willie Horton ad.
But despite the obvious smarts behind this ad strategy, do you really want someone who exploits racial hatred for political gain sitting in the White House? What if that slips out of control?
It seems to me anyone who votes for a candidate who runs ads like that is a racist, because voting for that candidate supports racism.
That ad makes McCain the David Duke of the 2008 campaign.
So now it’s essentially confirmed that the bugs in the “mail-order anthrax” caper came from Fort Deitrich. After years of stumbling around, and with Congress on the scent of something rotten, the Feds first tried to pin the blame on a guy who, aw shucky darn, happened to have proof that he couldn’t-a done it. The next guy they went after offed himself, taking whatever he knew to the great beyond, and no doubt any and all material the FBI has on the case has been locked up under “national security” orders and might possibly be declassified for your great-great-great-great-great grandchildren to see.
This is all very convenient–for the Bush gang. Just like how blowing Valerie Plame’s cover provided an excuse to sequester all the data her organization had, which probably showed that Saddam had no “weapons of mass destruction” save for maybe a large herd of camels trained to spit in the same direction on command.

The heart of the problem there is not a lack of troops, but a lack of understanding of their economy and an overall lack of understanding of how to do nation-building in a country like that. More troops + a smarter approach would be beneficial though. Afghanistan is still not in as hopeless a condition as Iraq.
