Air America Radio shut off its microphones today and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It will continue to provide affiliates with “encore” programming through 9PM Monday, January 25, at which time its programming will end for good.
I suppose you could call Air America a failure, and from a business perspective it certainly was. It never operated in the black, and seemed to be in the midst of financial and management turmoil since before it launched in April of 2004.
But it helped catapult Al Franken into the U.S. Senate, and launched a then unknown Rachel Maddow on the path toward her own show on MSNBC, and will leave behind dozens of thriving progressive talk stations nationwide. And without the ecosystem that Air America spawned, Ed Schultz and other successful progressive talkers might never have had the opportunity to reach a national audience.
That’s a pretty impressive legacy, and one for which I at least am grateful.

This news is like a death in the family. Air America indeed left an impressive legacy of talent in the national discourse.

I give money to the orgs and persons I believe are doing solid investigative journalism.

I listened to Thom Hartmann and Ed S. a bit. Can’t say that I agreed with them on much – too much big government in their rifts. It’ll be sad to not have them on AM-1090, though. I liked to switch between Air America and the conservative side while driving around. Good for a few laughs.
But let’s not be hasty. The death of Air America has been impending since about the day it began. They’ll have to show me the stake sticking out of it’s cold dead dark heart before I really believe it and start dancing on Malloy’s chin sticking out of the dirt.

What a great week this has been. And the news just keeps getting better and better.

The photo comes from Miller’s very own gallery, and she’s very proud of it. Want proof? Listen to broadcast archives from the last five or six weeks. They’re all about her. And the blood in her eye.
Miller, you’ll recall, was abandoned by Republicans and raised by rodents. But some of us with very long memories remember her biological father who was the ultra-conservative (rabid conservative, said the MSM) candidate for vice president of the United States.
He was also a prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials.

My assessment is dead on. You and the other HA-ter’s on this site will find that out all too real in November and again 2 years from then. Air America is but the latest casualty of the failed liberal philosophy, earlier this week was Kennedy’s senate seat lost to the GOP in a Blue state.

By the way, I do not totally listen to AIr America, I listen to Dave Ross, in fact, that is the podcast I listen to first after downloading, and do follow Ron and Don, and Frank Shiers. In the latter, sometimes I am disspointed for the better. I also balance my American media with checking 2 Canadian Media sources to see what they cover of our news. The CBC AND Global National.
Proud Leftist, I have seen some stations run from bad business models. When there was a podcast available, I followed the feed from KUDO in Anchorage. Owned not by a big corporation(for now), but by the IBEW, it had a good mix of local and national programming, but the contractor operating it first eliminated all the local programming, then brought some back after awhile.

What did Brown do? Campaign his ass off presing the flesh and getting himself better acquainted with the Mass. people. That mixed with Coakley’s verbal gaffes (Curt Schilling’s a Yankee fan for example) made her seem less competent as the race wore on. Then, when she just abandons her campaign to go on vacation, I think she sent a signal that many elitists do. “It’s mine and I know it”. Bad thinking no matter what side of the aisle you’re from.
In the end this was a mixture of a repudiation of the last year of out of control spending by a Democrat controlled Congress and white house and a poor candidate acting poorly and dismissive of her constituents. Government is best served with checks and balances. The Republicans acted badly when they had it and the Democrats have done it when they were given the same control.
But don’t dismiss the Obama lie of transparency. There has been absolutely nothing transparent about this administration or the legislation they’re supporting and attempting to push through without the least bit of scrutiny. I started a software engineering study group about 12 years ago. My personal journey, my relationship with the material, has been very fruitful.
Starting out, the Design Patterns book was canonical, the source of truth. It was serious struggle to learn its lessons.
The second iteration was “oh, I get it now” and I feel I mastered the material.
The third go around, many of us were of the opinion that “design patterns” are moot, kind of like “there is no spoon” from The Matrix. Use them sometimes, sure, but mostly I just use the tools that seem most appropriate for the problem at hand.
Could I, or any of us, gotten to this stage of post-mastery without having slogged through the material over the course of years.
No.
We had to earn it.
And so it is with any worthwhile area of study.
Also, it’s useless trying to explain a post-design patterns solution to someone who’s education is less far along. It’s impossible to relate directly. So I use the language of design patterns, not because it’s “correct”, but because I want to communicate, to bring someone else along, to educate.
You may have been one of the students who could have handled all the tangents, miscellany, incidentals. But courseware isn’t written for you. It’s for teaching 1,000s of students the basics as efficiently as possible.
If you wanted to know more, there’s always the library, or scheduling office time with the prof.
