It’s that time of year again. Time to debate if the Space Needle should fly the rainbow flag.
The Space Needle, a symbol of Seattle though owned by a private company, initially said it would not fly the rainbow flag last year. The company changed its mind after $50,000 was raised to benefit charities that work with the LGBT community, and the flag waved during Seattle’s 2011 Gay Pride Parade.
The 2012 parade is this weekend. Space Needle managers haven’t responded to my question about whether they will or won’t fly the flag atop the structure, now painted “galaxy orange” in honor of its 50th anniversary.
I hope they fly it every year, like the 12th man flag.
I have a serious question:
If/when the major components of the LGBTQQ (not sure if I missed any but my nephew in SF used this acronym recently – had to ask what the second Q meant) movement are granted all of the rights they want…….
What happens to these proponent groups? Do they persist as advocacy entities? Do they dissemble, their goal having been achieved?
Since nobody ever gets everything they want maybe it’s silly for me to ask what happens when they get everything they want, but what happens when their main reason for existence goes away because they were successful?
Why do you ask? Do you WANT to get rid of us?
As for the second Q, it could be so simple as he hit the key twice.
Interesting choice of words. “Granted the rights”. Rights are not privileges to be earned or taken away. For example, we have the privilege to drive a car on public streets. We have the RIGHT of equal protection under the law. We are not begging, hat in hand, for the King to grant us some special dispensation. Since they are Rights, we are supposed to have them already. we are fighting for our Rights to stop being denied. We are fighting for what should be ours in the first place.

I assume they mostly will. They exist because there is an injustice and once that injustice is resolved, they tend to go away. You don’t see a lot of Women’s Suffrage organizations at the moment, but as the right wing keeps chipping away at people’s Rights, advocacy groups will form or reform to counter them.
I would hate to see gay advocacy groups become a parody like the NRA, that keeps getting everything they want, so they have to keep stretching for more extreme positions of fear and paranoia to justify their funding drives.

Regarding your mention of NRA, I don’t think they get ‘everything’. Abortion is legal and yet there are still plenty of advocacy groups out there, because abortion is under attack around the edges. Similarly, gun rights are under attack around the edges.
