Mayor Sam Adams acknowledged today that he had a sexual relationship in 2005 with an 18-year-old man he had mentored. He said he lied when asked about it in 2007 and told the young man, Beau Breedlove, to lie about it, too.
Okay, yeah, another politician, another sex scandal. All the points that will now be made are utterly predictable. On the one hand who cares what politicians do in their private lives? On the other hand, he was doing it with a man far younger than himself while serving on the city commission, and then lied about the relationship, portraying it as “mentoring.”
Oh lord. What is it with politicians and their inability to keep their pants zipped? Adams just took office as mayor this month. Bad news for Portland during a tough patch in history. As if any citizens need this kind of distraction right now.
(And that’s real classy, Oregonian, to not even mention your local competitor that ran circles around you.)
“In fall 2007, as Adams made plans to run for mayor, rumors surfaced that he and Breedlove had a sexual relationship — and that their liaison began when Breedlove was 17. That’s a crime — misdemeanor sex abuse, contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor or sexual misconduct, depending on certain details — under Oregon law.”
If they had sex before the kid was 18, he broke the law.
If they didn’t, then I can still use the George Bush excuse for another 12 hours. He didn’t quite break the law, so no harm, no foul. Works for bush. You conservatives should be used to that by now.

1, 2 – The law’s the law. If he broke the law, prosecute him. If he didn’t, then it’s for the voters to judge if he runs for re-election.

And…”affair”? That’s used almost exclusively when a married person has an “affair” with someone outside of their marriage. Since gays can’t be married they can’t have affairs. You can’t have it both ways. They can have sex, with anyone they want (as LONG as they’re of legal age, ahem), but since they can’t be married, they can’t have “affairs”…just sex. ;-)

If he wasn’t married, and she WAS 18 when they had sex, then it’s just TACKY, but not illegal, and I don’t care.

This particular case seems inappropriate. But jee whiz, this world would probably be a better place if we didn’t have the news media monitoring the sexual practices of the politicians.

Exactly. I didn’t (and still don’t) care if Bill Clinton had sex or cheated on his wife, that’s between them and she was/is free to divorce him. It’s the COVERUP, the lying about it, that creates the problem every time.
Like you said, the warts aren’t a problem, you can be a cocaine using drunk driver like Bush was and just “find Jesus” about 10 months before you run for office and people almost always buy it (well the dumb folks do anyway, and that’s enough to get you elected). If you can’t find Jesus (again), just cry like Jerry Falwell did when he got caught with prostitutes and that works most of the time. Now if it’s TOO much (Ted Haggard, with gays, drugs AND prostitutes all rolled up into one) than you’ll have to resign until your “comeback” in two years.

Beau seems to be doing fine. Has anybody asked him whether he was harmed in any way by his relationship with Adams? He’d know.
In the meantime, the Mayor of Portland is getting some interesting attention. He’s so new in his term that it he’ll have plenty of time to demonstrate that this has little to do with his ability to be Mayor, or not.

Let’s see… Foley hid the fact that he’s gay. I don’t know about Adams, I suspect not (I don’t keep up with Oregon politics much).
Foley was a member of a party which regularly uses fear of homosexuals as a “wedge tactic”. Adams was not.
Foley was obviously “trolling” for sex with minors under his control, even though he was never proven to have sex with any of them who were under 18. Adams apparantly had sex with an 18 year old, I’d be interested to know what extent he might have been in a position of authority over the guy before he was 18.
Foley sent e-mails to minors which could reasonably be viewed as flirting, if not outright solicitation. That can, by itself, be a crime. I don’t know anything about Adam’s communications with this guy by electronic means, but I presume all his e-mails and text messages will become public within the next few months or so.
