A majority of Republicans nationally support establishing Christianity as the national religion, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.
The poll by the Democratic-leaning firm found that 57 percent of Republicans “support establishing Christianity as the national religion” while 30 percent are opposed. Another 13 percent said they were not sure.
It almost goes without saying that the Establishment Clause of the Constitution prohibits establishing of a national religion.
Think about that for a moment: only 30 percent of Republicans are sure that they oppose establishing Christianity as the national religion, a notion about as fundamentally antithetical to the American tradition as one could get. Of course, I suppose they could always get around the first ten words of the Bill of the Rights via a constitutional amendment repealing it, but then the rest of us would have no choice but to wage a bloody civil war in which to win our nation back. So there’s that.
Also, this.
Willy Vomit spews:
Article VI, paragraph III of the United States Constitution:
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
The reality is that the “Conservatives” fundamentally oppose the Constitution in its current form, and do not hesitate to say so. They are opposed to the fundamental rights to citizenship under the 14th Amendment, they are opposed to the 4th Amendment and the 5th. They are not about being “strict constructionists” at all. They are Tory revolutionaries and radicals. They are about eliminating the Federal Government altogether and leaving the States to run things internally as they see fit.
They’re still whining about losing the civil war for chrissakes.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@1 You neglected to mention they also oppose the 13th Amendment.
Roger Rabbit spews:
It’s not hard to see where they’re going with this: Only “Christians” (as defined by them) will be allowed to vote or hold public office.
Mark Adams spews:
As long as the question is left at Christian there is a fair chance that a substantial number of Democrats would respond the someway, particularly the rare Dixiecrat. Did the pole also have numbers for Democrats?
The place where all this falls apart is when you start pushing what kind of Christian. Anyone who believes in Christ. Many Buddhists believe in Christ.
Even among Republicans if you change the question to bible thumpers or the only true kind of Christian is Catholicism or Mormonism they will suddenly be all for separation of church and state and be a lot less gung ho about pushing thi agenda. Still they got a base of folks out there who are fundamentalist. You democrats want those folks back? Some of those good folks when you really get into their politics are pretty liberal when you push em on issues of poverty and war.
Some are true believers that a rich man can’t easily make it into heaven and are actually pretty decent folks, that I don’t always see eye to eye with.
Ima Dunce spews:
They would, of course, need to start jailing people who defied their religion and spoke out against it. And no scientific evidence would be allowed that contradicted their bible. From there it would just devolve to where it always has over thousands of years: murder, murder, murder…and then some more murder.
Teabagger spews:
Of course they do. And some even hate Veterans. Does anyone feel like this Veteran was treated fairly? Was this justice?
‘American Sniper’ Trial: Eddie Ray Routh Convicted Of Killing Chris Kyle And Chad Littlefield

Life in prison? You serve your country in time of need. You come back a little fucked up and you make a big mistake and then there is little mercy upon you? I personally don’t think this was fair. The guy was a little nutzo, or thesis the great American hero wouldn’t have been trying to help him. What was the great American hero helping him with or for?
I guess this is Texass way of telling your Veterans that need mental health to just commit suicide instead.
“Routh “took the lives of two heroes, men who tried to be a friend to you, and you became an American disgrace,” Jerry Richardson, Littlefield’s half-brother, told Routh in court.”
Is that how you treat this guy. Did it matter who the victims were? I suppose if they weren’t “American Heroes” then the deaths would have been more acceptable?
Completely bullshit. Every Veteran should be bullshit about the outcome of this trial.
Teabagger spews:
“The Littlefield family had waited “two years for God to get justice for us,” she said. “He was faithful.”
”
There you have it – God is vindictive. God doesn’t forgive and forget. These people use God as there excuse for taking revenge.
Why don’t you fuckwads leave God out of it. You feeling a little too guilty of yourself being too vengeful. Sorry ass Christian.
Teabagger spews:
@6 is a little off topic. I thought this thread was a more about how Republicans hate America in General.
But it goes without saying that they are getting closer to being Nazis everyday.
And they are hypocrites. They could never live by the Bible.
Libertarian spews:
I think most of the Founding Fathers were Deists, not Christians. However a person interprets the concept of “God” and religion is pretty much OK with me, but trying to force others to adapt to that view is the reason we have so much trouble with religion.
Christianity is no better or more worse than any of the other religions of the world. It’s just the one that took root in the Western World, just as Islam worked for the people of the Middle East.
Chris spews:
@1 What are you talking about? Republicans won the civil war and the opposition to the 14th amendment is people who have never been to this country rushing across the border to give their child U.S. citizenship, not legitmate births in the U.S.
@2 Wow that’s a good one. I guess the race card got worn out so you are just going for the hail mary and saying Republicans support slavery now. Are you really fucking serious?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Via Digby:
There’s a revealing passage in a report from Kevin Jenkins of the St. George (Utah) Spectrum on an appearance by Cliven Bundy at a gathering of “constitutional conservative” zealots under the aegis of the Independent American Party:
“If our (U.S.) Constitution is an inspired document by our Lord Jesus Christ, then isn’t it scripture?” he asked.
“Yes,” a chorus of voices replied.
“Isn’t it the same as the Book of Mormon and the Bible?” Bundy asked.
“Absolutely,” the audience said.
Steve spews:
“@1 You neglected to mention they also oppose the 13th Amendment.”
I’d say they’re not particularly fond of the 19th Amendment either.
Libertarian spews:
@12,
Nor the 16th Amendment!
Steve spews:
“However a person interprets the concept of “God” and religion is pretty much OK with me”
For the most part.
“but trying to force others to adapt to that view is the reason we have so much trouble with religion.”
This is an interpretation of God and religion and is the problem presented by many extremist fundamentalists of the Abrahamic faiths. For American Christianity we can look to the Dominionists and Reconstructionists, those who would bring theocracy to America. They are a loud voice in the right-wing echo chamber, preying on people’s fears and resentments, and I believe that’s why we see 57% of Republicans reflect their views.
Steve spews:
“Nor the 16th Amendment!”
Maybe we should approach this from the other direction. We know they like the 2nd Amendment. Any others?
Worf spews:
The conservative constitution, in. It’s entirety:
We the GOD FEARING People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, do ordain and establish that A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. So sayeth the LORD.
Yawn spews:
@6…Oy vey, you really believe this punishment is unfair? I’d say life in prison was the merciful choice.
seatackled spews:
@15
Isn’t there one they try to use for their state’s rights claims? 9th or 10th, I think.
Steve spews:
@18 Oh, yeah, states rights. Good one. So they like the 2nd and 10th Amendments. Is that about it?
Steve spews:
They like the 1st Amendment for themselves, at least, but not so much for the rest of us.
Mark Adams spews:
@6 It’s Texas. Don’t matter if your talking about folks from either party it’s all about justice and hanging em high. Sounds to me like the guys attorneys did pretty well and set things up for the appeal. The fact the death penalty wasn’t on the table was a big win for the guy. Doubt they will put him in the general population and may actually have to keep him in a mental health unit if they have any of those in Texas. In any case Texas will be spending more to house him than if the prosecutor had just agreed he was nuts and sent him to the nut house (yes they still use the phrase nut house in Texas), so you can guess whose going to run unopposed next election. Though just maybe he will have opposition cause he didn’t get this guy hung high enough,
Mark Adams spews:
Well when the State and Federal government says by the way God says pay your tithe and it’s 90% on you rich folks they will be upset. I don’t think their support of being a Christian nation they have thought of tithing, Gotta pay for all that Christianity and goodness and all that and to spread Christianity to all them heathens in the middle east.
