Joining me, Don and Will in our weekly game of "Left, Right and Joel" were Mollie, Carl, and Seattle P-I columnist Joel Connelly, who has lost his designation as a "special guest" by pretty much becoming a regular. Sadly, the Montlake Canteena scene doesn’t serve hard pear cider, thus putting a damper on an otherwise pleasant Tuesday.
The disappointing lack of Hurtado Tequila keeps me away from the alehouse and the lack of a yard of ale, which I require for my drinking satisfaction.
A shot of Hurtado and a yard of ale is all I need to prepare me for a night of political discussion.
The lack of “hard pear cider” seems like the pretentions of a man who only THINKS he is a man of the world. It also sounds a little effeminate — no offense to the Fab Five!!!
What really offends me about these wingers from (un)SP is how far “left” they think liberal HA.org readers are. There’s absolutely zilch discussion about Marxism or “revolution” or any of that claptrap here or on any other liberal WA state blog.
Here’s what I want out of the government:
1) a moderately higher priority for k-12 education so teachers don’t leave the profession and kids have safe cheery enviroments to feel safe to learn in. A little more funding for community colleges would be great too.
2) An income tax and business tax reform so that sales taxes can be lowered, property taxes can be lowered and a rainy day fund can be maintained. In short, make the constant dysfunctional turmoil of funding the state government a thing of the past.
3) Secure funding of infrastructure improvement and maintenance so business can function and we can maintain an adequate economy here.
4) Growth and environmental regulations that preserve what’s special about this place. Something I thought most people valued here. People who want what’s happened to Southern California should try their shtick somewhere else.
Now what’s so freaking Marxist about that?

A laborer who raped and murdered a suburban homemaker in her bedroom after being hired to clean a backyard deck was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the chance of parole.
The sentencing came on what would have been the 13th wedding anniversary of the victim, Mary Nagle, and her husband, Daniel.

“…the Bush administration says that it’s time to do something about … congestion.
”Congestion is not a fact of life. We need a new approach and we need it now,” said Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta.
Five years ago, Mineta complained that ”congestion and delay not only waste our time as individuals, they also burden our businesses and our entire economy.”
The transportation secretary Tuesday unveiled a strategy to reduce congestion that included privatizing roads, putting tolls on busy roads and designating corridors for development to speed movement of truck and rail freight.”
Administration Now has a “Congestion Strategy”
So, here’s their plan:
(1) “privatizing roads” (i.e., turning public highways, paid with taxpayer dollars, over to private companies to manage for their profit. Anybody want to bet that Halliburton or one of its subsidiaries is designated as the only qualified bidder?).
(2) “putting tolls on busy roads”. In other words, imposing a use tax for the privildge of using a public highway. The rich and large business gets to use the fast highways, everybody else has to use the back roads.
(3) “designating corridors for development to speed movement of truck and rail freight”. In other words, pass legislation to waive environmental or property-right issues so tax money can be used to build new highways and railroads that are unavailable for use by the average citizen or small business. But I doubt any public highways or rail corriders will ever be built, unless they use imminent domain to take the land, allow waivers to ignore environmental laws, and then turn the corridors over to large mega-businesses (like Halliburton) who will agree to “manage” the corridors in return for the development rights along the right-of-way and the right to keep any profits from the venture. Kind of like the proposal the Sonics made to Seattle.
Look, I’m all for increasing investment in our transportation infrastructure. Our existing freeway roadbeds are nearing the end of their usefull life, and we need reconstruction of large stretches of I-5 and bridges around the state. The railways in this country have suffered from lack of attention for far too long. As for commercial airports, we need to find a location to build one in the North Sound region eventually, so we might as well do it now before it becomes a crisis from excess capacity at SeaTac.
But the minute you hear the Republicans of this adminstration refer to the word “privitazation”, you had better put your hand on your wallet, because they are about to take something from you and give it to one of their friends.

There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!
He was being drilled by a senator; “Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?”
Ollie replied, “Yes, I did, Sir.”
The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, “Isn’t that just a little excessive?”
“No, sir,” continued Ollie.
“No? And why not?” the senator asked.
“Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir.”
“Threatened? By whom?” the senator questioned.
“By a terrorist, sir Ollie answered.
“Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?”
“His name is Osama bin Laden, sir” Ollie replied.
At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn’t pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn’t. A couple of people laughed at the attempt.
Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?” the senator asked.
“Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of”, Ollie answered.
“And what do you recommend we do about him?” asked the senator.
“Well, sir, if it s up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.”
The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.
