Contributions slowed down over the weekend but we’re still on target. 79 readers have now contributed almost $2,700 to HA’s pledge drive, bringing us three-quarters of the way towards our $3,500 goal with three days remaining. Thank you for giving liberally.
Also, John Barelli, a regular in the comment threads, was the first local businessman to take me up on my suggestion to advertise here on HA. That “mini” ad for Tides Real Estate out in Gig Harbor costs only $25/week, or $40/month with a three-month frequency discount. If an ad like that only generates one good lead every few months, it more than pays for the cost.
Advertising on HA and other local blogs is a great way to show that you support the progressive community while getting your message out to a very focused audience of like-minded customers. And patronizing the local businesses that advertise here is a great way to “buy blue” and help build the local progressive infrastructure. Be sure to tell them that you saw their ad on HA.
It’s Pledge Week at HA.
Please give liberally.

Thank you, Roger Rabbit, for reminding all of us about this important passage in the Constitution. I haven’t had a civic class in more decades than I care to admit. But I’d love to learn more about Constitutional Law. Not to become a lawyer or a Constitutional scholar, but just to learn the basics.
Could your recommend some books that break down each section of the Constitution and gives a fundamental explanation of what the law is and how it’s applied?
Thanks,

Roger Rabbit spews:
@11 The major topics of interest to someone interested in civil liberties and potential abuse of power are:
1. Free speech
2. Freedom of religion
3. Freedom of association
4. Due process
5. Equal protection
6. Habeas corpus
7. Right to speedy trial
8. Unreasonable searches and seizures
9. Taking without just compensation
10. Powers reserved to states
A general overview of constitutional law that discusses legal principles and gives case citations is the West Publishing Company’s “Nutshell” book on the topic. You should be able to find this at University Bookstore, in the law book section, for about $30 or so.
There are also summaries available for use by law students, such as Gilbert’s, for a similar price but these are intended for use in conjunction with law courses and may be difficult for lay persons to follow.
I would think there are books available in public libraries on constitutional law written for general audiences.
However, you can get a fairly decent summary of the general principles, written in lay language, and for free, from Wikipedia and other internet sources. Just do a word search for the topic you’re interested in.

Thank you so much for taking time to make your reccomendations. I figured I could find a lot on line, but I prefer books when I’m diving into new areas of learning. I guess I’m just proving that I’m middle aged.
I’m going to pick up a copy of the book you recommended and study a little more on the 10 topics you covered.
It’s important for me to know I’m getting my information from reliable sources that’s why I valued your suggestion so highly.
Thanks, again Col. Rabbit!

nope….but the reality is john’s business isn’t in gig harbor at all. and when you go to his site he shows the “local” businesses that he implies are near his office. why doesn’t he show the local businesses that are right next to his business? not classy enough for you ,john?
the reality is purdy is a separate town and area. it is NOT gig harbor.and if you are going to have the attitude that, so what, they are CLOSE……then i guess he could have his office in TACOMA …that would be about as honest.
you know guys…..honesty and reality do count to most everyone but the liberals that post on here. john already showed poor judgement in placing an ad on HA and now we know why. reality just isn’t his “thing”……
NOW that really makes someone want to have him as their agent doesn’t it?
i mean….what’s the big diff between $60.00 and $600,000?
just a couple zeroes so why worry?

yup…you got me there.there ARE plenty of liberals in gig harbor. but then, no one ever said they were smart there, did they? in “yah sure ya betcha land”…..
and i am friends with quite a few of the “liberals” you talk about and guess what? they are all rich trust fund mac’mansion owners.hardly goldy’s peeps, right? i mean he hates those rich bastards, right? or is this just like the democrats “let us at ’em, let us at ’em” routine and now that they are “at them” they have nothing? LOL.
i do know one thing for sure…the last thing any of those people want to be associated with is purdy……..
which shows that john is either playing to the ‘out of town’ crowd or he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

No, Tides Tavern is a different outfit altogether, although we did have our office Christmas party there.
We’re over by the Purdy Bridge, and have been around for a long time. It used to be “Roland and Roland”, but when they sold the business several years back, we changed the name.
Oh, and no, I’m not what you would call “new”. We get some business from over on that side of the Sound, and there are a few local folks that read this, at least from some of the comments I’ve already received.
Gig Harbor is the home of our local State Senator, Derek Kilmer (D – Gig Harbor), and one of the two local State Representatives, Pat Lantz (D – Raft Island). Both of them won the local area by large margins, as did Captain Seaquist (D – Bremerton). It’s a pretty liberal area.
While this isn’t really my prime advertising area, it really is rather cheap for the amount of exposure this blog gets.
Oh, and christmasghost, while I think Purdy is a great little place, it isn’t an incorporated town, and does not have its own Post Office, so the address is “Gig Harbor”. Considering that both my website and the office site clearly say “by the Purdy Bridge” it isn’t as if I’m trying to hide my location. You can even see the bridge in the background of my photo.
Hey, this blogad is turning out to be even better advertising than I had hoped! I’d better sign up for a longer stretch before Goldy raises the price!
Tree Frog Farmer spews:

christmasghost spews:
yup john…you are so right. i would definitely sign up for more ad space before “the prices go up”. god!
okay….why didn’t you show the businesses by your office? i’m sure they would like the free press too…don’t you think?
and you made my point for me. the area is FULL of liberals. rich rich liberals. why isn’t kilmer donating to goldy?
and why aren’t all his posters with big mouths and [supposedly] big businesses advertising on his site?
because they actually care about getting business …….
i give you credit for one thing though john…you ARE actually putting your money where your mouth is. now, when those out of towners see that you have ads here and go and look for it and decide to buy from someone else….you can always live with goldy. but it is refreshing to see someone who walks the talk.

Actually, the Margarita Beach Cafe (next door) gets so much business that we keep arguing over parking spaces. Not a lot, as they’re pretty good folks and really try to cooperate with us. They have really good food, too.
Still, I really should put a picture of their place on the website. Oh, and the Target, Home Depot and the other Gig Harbor North businesses are about two miles from my office. Canterwood Golf and Country Club (if you’ve lived here, you know what I mean) is even closer.
Gig Harbor is growing. Wauna (remember Wauna?) has million dollar homes now. Even Dexter’s has had a major face-lift. They still make really good burgers, too.
Actually, it seems that there are a number of folks that have seen it. Frankly, I mainly used the ad as a way of supporting Goldy. I didn’t expect to get much from it, but it also didn’t cost much. If it got a bit of attention, it would be worth the rather low cost.
There are a few folks that will object to my stated positions here, but I have stated that if I believe something enough to put it in writing, I should be willing to stand by it, even if it becomes uncomfortable.
And if someone seriously objects to my opinions, they would probably be happier with a different agent anyway. Those folks tend to ask about my politics in our first interview, or ask me to point out where there are “folks like us” living. All it usually takes to get them to choose a different agent is to show them my written equal housing opportunity policy, and mention that I take it very seriously.
As for the ad, it has already generated more attention than I expected. Money well spent.

That is not what I said at all. Typical WingNut to twist and make up something from nothing.
1. You don’t know my education.
2. You have no idea of/about my experience.
We are all the sum product of our experiences and education. We learn daily, we experience daily. I have many issues that are important to me. Mine is not a limited scope.
However the fact that you keep harping on it tells me your scope is extremely limited.
Just wondering spews:
Barelli, what B&O tax rate do you pay as a real estate company?

Son, have you thought to examine or seek help for the insidious and visceral anger you have for anyone with whom you disagree or whose views differ from yours? It may well be that spending so much time in front of a screen reading and contributing tripe is fomenting your anger.

I believe it is fully within the realm of possibility that I am your elder in both years and experience, hence my reference to you as \’son\’. You seem to have taken exception to that, as you seem to take exception to so much, that your rebuttal is to use a blatant racist reference. That does little to convince anyone of your maturity, in age, intelligence or attitude.
Is fomenting such an unusual word that there is the possibility only one person uses it? Not in the world I inhabit. Perhaps yours. In that case, I repeat the suggestion I made to you on an earlier occasion: you need to expand your horizons, son.
