I was listening to a podcast set in medieval France, and it quoted one of the sources saying that donkeys would fly before a siege was lifted. I don’t remember having heard of any land animals other than pigs flying. I took French in high school, and I don’t remember that coming up. Is there a zoo of flying animals in other languages?

I do not understand the lemming need to support trump. Can’t they see he’s a disaster? Don’t they care? Is it that they think even if he fails, he will destroy everything with him, except them, as he goes down? Or that they can’t imagine their lives being worse, and it will make their enemies suffer.

Wherein Sen. Orrin eats crow:
“Sen. Orrin Hatch … issued a statement on Friday expressing regret for telling CNN ‘I don’t care’ when asked about President Donald Trump being implicated in crimes by Michael Cohen. ‘Earlier this week in an unplanned hallway interview with CNN, I made comments about allegations against the President that were irresponsible and a poor reflection on my lengthy record of dedication to the rule of law,’ the senator said in the statement.
“In the interview with CNN earlier in the week, Hatch strongly dismissed the federal government’s allegations that Trump directed Cohen, his former attorney, to commit two crimes by facilitating hush money payments to silence stories about alleged affairs with Trump.
“Asked if he had any concerns that Trump was implicated, Hatch told CNN: ‘The Democrats will do anything to hurt this President.’ Informed it was alleged by the Southern District of New York, Hatch said: ‘OK, but I don’t care, all I can say is he’s doing a good job as President.'”
https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/14/politics/orrin-hatch-president-trump-comments/index.html
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Here’s the thing: It wasn’t the Democrats, but Cohen, who said Trump directed him to make the payments. It wasn’t the Democrats, but prosecutors, who told the court that Trump directed Cohen to make the payments. For a lawyer like Hatch, that’s being damned careless with the facts.
But you gotta take into account what kind of person Hatch is. Back in 1976, he defeated Democrat Sen. Frank Moss by campaigning on term limits and running ads that said, “What do you call a Senator who’s served in office for 18 years? You call him home.” And then proceeded to squat in the Senate for 42 years.
Don’t believe Hatch’s contrition about his stupid and irresponsible remarks about Trump’s culpability in the payoffs. It’s as phony as the term limits promises he made 42 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of arbitrary terms limits; we already have term limits, they’re call elections. It’s Hatch’s phoniness I’m zeroing in on here. This guy is, and always has been, a mountebank.

As in “lying under oath,” but that’s SOP for Trump underlings. If he were a Democrat, Republicans would be shouting for his head.

@9 Good advice! Especially if you’re a criminal. But even if you’re not, the only thing you should ever say to the police is, “I want a lawyer.” Even if you’re innocent, they may try to frame you. Never trust a cop.

“Taking away democratic rights—extreme gerrymandering; blocking an elected president from nominating a Supreme Court justice; selectively paring voting rolls and polling places; creating spurious anti-fraud commissions; misusing the census to undercount the opposition; calling lame-duck legislative sessions to pass laws against the will of the voters—is the Republican Party’s main political strategy, and will be for years to come.”

“Former sheriff Rodney ‘Jack’ Strain, who received national scorn after making racist comments on TV, is reportedly facing allegations he sexually abused teenagers while in office.
“’This is very disturbing and shocking to me, but not only to me but this whole parish,’ current St. Tammany Sheriff Randy Smith told New Orleans’ WWL-TV. ‘When you have allegations of sexual abuse involving minors, it’s sickening.’
“According to Smith, the sexual abuse allegations, which were first reported by WWL-TV and The New Orleans Advocate, surfaced during a federal corruption probe into a now-defunct privately-run inmate work release program Strain supervised. …
“Strain, 56, held the office of sheriff from 1995 to 2015. Under him, the parish quickly became known as having the highest incarceration rates for black men in the entire state, earning it the nickname ‘St. Slammany.'”
