What Burgess describes and tends to believe is an idea of the “faith driven” voter that really only accounts for a very small percentage of the Hillbilly/Traitor/Klan voter base. Even among the overall general population of voters, most of whom are “EEENDEEEPENDUNCE”, it is a tiny sliver.
Think about the term itself: faith driven.
That implies on its face a voter whose decisions surrounding public policy, the contours of civic life, and choices among political candidates as being driven by an unyielding uncompromising adherence, absent all evidence to the contrary, in a belief system grounded in superstition and fantasy.
This suggests a few things right away. First and foremost would be a group of voters very open to being manipulated by demagogues. When your decisions about public policy are driven by faith, then certainly a very easy point of entry for persuasion would be that faith itself, since it is not tethered to any evidence based in objective reality. Authority within faith is not based on objective merit, nor discernible contribution to public life through accomplishment, but primarily through pure rhetoric itself and public perception arising from same. Thus anyone seeking to implement public policy objectively contrary to broad public interest need only establish bona fides through a campaign of rhetoric and promotion. Fear can be key, since we have already admitted that this is a population of voters manifestly self-identifying as eager to believe in the supernatural.
But I’m confident this probably does not accurately describe someone like Mr. Burgess. So why would he use such a term? Who can say? But I suspect such people are relying on this kind of self-description in order to cope with some flaw or failure they see in themselves. Telling themselves they are responding to some agency outside their own intelligence, perception, and motivation gives them comfort and even heightened self-confidence. So probably Mr. Burgess makes decisions just like most people, weighing experience along with available evidence. Saying he “relies on his faith” is merely a more humble version of the true zealot’s “God Told Me To” explanation. It gets him off the hook in a way he apparently needs. That’s more like the vast bulk of values voters. And it isn’t even remotely “faith driven”. As we’ve seen recently, it can very often be hate “driven”. But that’s a different kind of “faith”.
