13
Teabagged to Deathspews:
@1 not that I think Our government is incapable of properly screening any Syrian refugees, other refugees for that matter, but I really don’t think the question is whether some of the refugees are currently radical terrorists. It seems like that some 5 year old Syrian refugee, or other, could settle down in this Country and then later, like say 15-20 years later, become a radical terrorist.
But it seems like that is the risk we take with any individual, I guess that even applies to any naturalized America Citizen.
Sure there is risk that someone bad could slip through the cracks, but I think there is a small chance, if screened properly. But regardless, there is no telling if that individual 15 years later is a different person, as we see with each of the examples that are given in post #1.
Funny how France said today that they would still be accepting 20,000 Syrian refugees. And I think there is some truth to saying that turning refugees away is exactly what ISIS wants us and everyone to do – not only is it good propaganda, but it also could recruit an individual running away from ISIS to consider joining them.
So, if we can’t trust anyone entering this Country from becoming a future terrorist (which is virtually impossible – we accept our domestic ones) then we need to seal the borders and not let anyone enter in period – sounds like it to me (not suggesting it – only pointing out, that if you don’t have any trust in the vetting process and you can’t keep any refugee or immigrant from ever becoming a terrorist, then what else do you do).
Once again, Republicans have no solution, just knee jerk reactions.

not that it will do any good, but neither politics, nor guilt, nor innocence should enter into it*. LE officers, when they understand their role, carry out arrest warrants based, not on the standards of proof required for a criminal conviction, but rather based on probable cause (lower standard – insufficient to convict). Here in Real America we still rely on courts and trials for fact finding to determine guilt instead of paramilitary death squads. But you go right ahead and keep on pretending that you’re a human being.
*In Fuckwad country partisan GOP elected prosecutors frequently use their elected office to engage in smear campaigns and witch hunts against their political enemies. Once in a while they even manage to get a conviction. But mostly it’s for headlines (and fund raising). Fortunately we live in Real America where we elect public servants to govern and serve.

@13,
I think you probably misunderstand why Daesh wants western democracies to turn Syrian refugees away. Shiite refugees have almost nowhere else to go. And to remain would result in death. For Daesh, this is the desirable outcome for apostates. Sunni refugees, on the other hand, flee Daesh rule and press-gang style conscription. These families, bereft of economic support at home, have only two options: offer up their sons as conscripts to Daesh in return for economic support, or flee into Turkey. The flow of foreign fighters has slackened. And Daesh must turn to the local population for conscripts, especially as they prepare to push back against the advancing Kurds. Turning away refugees is in the interests of Daesh because they need conscripts now more than ever. Daesh is not engaged in a “hearts and minds” propaganda effort. They rule with fear, torture, starvation, rape, and murder.

But I figure Obama can just move and stick, picking his punches until Cruz wears down in the middle rounds.
My prediction: called TKO in the 7th.
Here’s something to ponder:
Over the last thirty years federal cash assistance to refugees in the U.S. has dropped from 36 months to just eight months. Normally, upon resettlement, if a refugee elects to relocate to another state they lose their cash benefits. Nowadays, of course, once your eight month ticket is up you might as well move wherever you want – nothing to lose. Florida and Texas are among the most popular destinations.
Kinda ironic aint it. If you were really really extremely scared of those terrible refugees you’d want that cash assistance prolonged. Huh.

I’m just curious. I’m like that sometimes. So if somebody suggests I should be worried about something, it makes me curious.
So I asked myself, if I were a bad guy from Daesh, how would I carry out an attack inside the U.S.?
First I’d have to get inside the U.S. to carry out my attack. Would I apply to enter as a B-2 tourist (7 day wait, interview usually waived, etc) or as a refugee (two year wait, multiple interviews, background checks, investigations)? Huh. That’s a good question, isn’t it.
Assuming I were prepared to overcome various hurdles concerning my identity, why would I attempt to enter the U.S. as a refugee, exposing myself to the very highest level of scrutiny and investigation? That only make sense if I want to settle in the U.S. If I’m just trying to carry out an attack, a B-2 visa is the way to go.

Truth always causes the batshit insane loon’s head to implode. That’s why he’s always making shit up. However, I don’t know why he even bothers to lie. It’s not like lying his ass off has ever kept his head from imploding or anything.

Carson isn’t “plummeting”. He’s at 13 % and there was one poll at 18% per Dr Darryl.
So good try TPPS! You can claim anything you want. Puddy used RCP because two other DUMMOCRETINS used RCP last week!

Take it at face value and the idiot is Piddles. 55
Roger Rabbitspews:
@22 You?
56
Roger Rabbitspews:
@24 The problem is it’s not a false equivalence, it’s a true equivalence, which is why Inslee and others are bringing it up. You defend the party that peddles this crap to its followers, who buy it wholesale, because they’re bigots looking for an excuse to hate someone. Doesn’t matter who, as long as they’re easy to profile. Skin color works best for that, of course, but nationality and religion are workable substitutes. One of the better lines in Turner Classics’ movie “Gettysburg” has the sergeant saying to Colonel Chamberlain, “Only peawits judge people by the group.” You qualify.
57
Roger Rabbitspews:
@25 You miss the true significance of that poll. It’s very interesting that Rubio does no better against Hillary than Carson or Cruz, and barely better (within the margin of error) than Trump. This strongly suggest the voters in question can’t tell wheat from chaff. Not that Rubio is all that nutritious, but rational people could argue he’s a little easier to swallow than dirt.
58

Consider giving us all a break and ban the persona, if that’s what it still is. If there’s anything left of the loon capable of commenting, and I doubt it, let him comment. I’d say banning “baby talk”, the nightmare of decoder rings, isn’t about limiting freedom of speech so much as it is about pulling the hook on a very tired act, or better yet, staging an intervention. I’d go with the latter because I believe the loon has become batshit fucking insane.
59
Stevespews:
The loon’s head will implode. The latest poll to come out of New Hampshire, a Fox News poll, no less, has Trump at 27% and the plummeting Carson at 9%, only a dismal third of Trump’s support. Ouch! It looks like the lamestream media’s revelation of Carson’s life of lying is taking its toll, not to mention what it’s doing to what remains of our batshit crazy loon’s mind.
Roger Rabbit Commentary: This, of course, is the rationale for candidates trailing badly in the early polls to stay in the race. They usually drop out when the money runs out, not because they ran out of hope.

Roger Rabbitspews:
@58 “The Loonmobile most definitely needs a tire change.”
It needs a driver change even worse.

For people interested in facts (you can skip this if you’re a Republican who never passes up an opportunity to discriminate against someone):
“In the 14 years since September 11, 2001, the United States has resettled 784,000 refugees from around the world, according to data from the Migration Policy Institute, a D.C. think tank. And within that population, three people have been arrested for activities related to terrorism. None of them were close to executing an attack inside the U.S., and two of the men were caught trying to leave the country to join terrorist groups overseas. ‘I think I can count on one hand the number of crimes of any significance that I’ve heard have been committed by refugees,’ said Lavinia Limon, a veteran of refugee work since 1975 and the president of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. ‘It just hasn’t been an issue.'”

outlier – a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set. Sounds like crackerjack box dr checkmate. Butt most HA DUMMOCRETINS are outliers!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Most of the time it’s the Monmouth poll… The one done with Al Jazeera… Al Jazeera America/

So what is the average crackerjack box dr checkmate?
average – a number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number. Dr Ben’s average number is 14.5!
This is what is put forth by crackerjack box dr checkmate 14.5< 17?

Also, even if the are connected. So this time they were caught….next what if they are not caught? How would this correlate to a Syrian Refugee, not connected, trying to come here with good intentions? Regardless if you allow refugees in or not, these 5 would probably still attempt to do the same thing and possibly succeed. So, what difference does it make? Those that want to harm us and want to get here will keep trying, regardless if we welcome innocent refugees into the country.
How about all the terrorist minded people that are already here, foreign and domestic? Sure why open the doors to terrorist so easily, but I question how easy it is, if they have to go through the trouble of stealing Greek passports – that would tell me that they thought it was easier to enter that way, then “legally” as a refugee.
Maybe these 5 felt that the whole refugee process would take them forever to gain entry into in this Country, so they said “shit, man, let’s just steal us some passports, we will get there sooner and easier”

“If you read the front page of The New York Times today, they said about Ben Carson that he’s unable to understand foreign policy,” Trump said. “You know, his people actually said this, that he’s unable to comprehend or understand foreign policy. It was a devastating story. It’s all over the place.”

November 19spews:
[quote]During his Monday press conference in Turkey, Barack Obama slammed opponents of his agenda to flood our nation with Syrian refugees. “When I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which a person who’s fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted … that’s shameful,” he lectured. “That’s not American. That’s not who we are. We don’t have religious tests to our compassion.”
Except American law says we do have a religious test for admitting refugees (in contrast with no religious test for holding public office). Specifically, former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy notes, “Under federal law, the executive branch is expressly required to take religion into account in determining who is granted asylum. Under the provision governing asylum (section 1158 of Title 8, U.S. Code), an alien applying for admission ‘must establish that … religion [among other things] … was or will be at least one central reason for persecuting the applicant.'” Furthermore, Section 1101(a)(42)(A) of Title 8, U.S. Code defines a refugee as a person “who is unable or unwilling to return to … that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of … religion [among other things].”
The reason we have asylum laws, and the reason they are geared toward a religious test, is that refugees are often fleeing their homeland because of religious persecution. The Islamic State is specifically and horrifically targeting Christians for persecution, slavery (including for sex) and death. Yet just 53 of the Syrian refugees Obama has admitted since 2011 have been Christians.
Exit question: Remember the time Obama fought extra hard to deport a Christian homeschooling family back to Germany? Was that a religious test?[quote]
[quote]Months ago, President Obama simply announced that “we” would take 10,000 refugees. After last Friday’s terrorist attack in Paris, and upon evidence that one of the perpetrators came into Europe with other refugees, 31 governors declared that their states will not accept Syrian refugees.
But note: this country doesn’t belong to Obama; those states don’t belong to those governors.
Back in September, I floated a different approach. “If I were president, I’d push for Congress to pass legislation specifically authorizing the acceptance of as many Syrian refugees as [Americans] stepped forward to sponsor. . . .”
“Sponsors could be individuals, families, churches, glee clubs, what-have-you, and would agree to cover costs for the Syrian person or family for one year or two or three,” I proposed. “But no welfare, no food stamps, no government housing. . . .”
Granted, my suggestion came before the latest terrorism. It was aimed not at security concerns but at sparing taxpayers. Why shouldn’t voluntary generosity dictate the extent of “our” generosity?
But come to think of it, my plan offers greater security, too. Why? It involves the personal faces of citizens, not merely a faceless bureaucracy. No matter how much vetting the government does, an ongoing link to an actual American provides another check.
There’s a legitimate debate about security vs. compassion. Millions are in need, displaced by terror — from both Daesh (ISIS) and the Assad regime. The Niskanen Center’s David Bier notes the resistance to accepting Jewish refugees prior to and during World War II, out of fear some might be spies. Christians may find Matthew 25:44-45 compelling.
On the other hand, there is undeniable risk. GOP presidential aspirants have called taking Syrian refugees “insane” and “looney.” Speaker Paul Ryan argues for a “better safe than sorry” pause.
Me? I support accepting the risk . . . but only if committed individual citizens step forward.
Not by any politician’s decree.
This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.[quote]

[quote]Here is how Edward Gibbon described the Goths’ sack of Rome in August 410 AD:
“In the hour of savage license, when every passion was inflamed, and every restraint was removed . . . a cruel slaughter was made of the Romans; and . . . the streets of the city were filled with dead bodies . . . Whenever the Barbarians were provoked by opposition, they extended the promiscuous massacre to the feeble, the innocent, and the helpless . . .”
Now, does that not describe the scenes we witnessed in Paris on Friday night?
It is conventional to say that the overwhelming majority of Muslims in Europe are not violent, and that is doubtless true. But it is also true that the majority of Muslims in Europe hold views that are not easily reconciled with the principles of our modern liberal democracies, including those novel notions we have about equality between the sexes and tolerance not merely of religious diversity but of nearly all sexual proclivities. And it is thus remarkably easy for a violent minority to acquire their weapons and prepare their assaults on civilization within these avowedly peace-loving communities. – Boston Globe [quote]

[quote]A Bloomberg poll taken after after the Paris terrorist attacks finds that a significant majority of Americans oppose President Obama’s status quo policy on Syrian refugees. The survey was published before reports emerged that Honduran officials detained five Syrian nationals attempting to enter the United States using stolen passports. Awkwardly, roughly two-thirds of Americans hold views that Obama would cast as un-American or aiding ISIS recruitment:
Most Americans want the U.S. to stop letting in Syrian refugees amid fears of terrorist infiltrations after the Paris attacks, siding with Republican presidential candidates, governors, and lawmakers who want to freeze the Obama administration’s resettlement program…Fifty-three percent of U.S. adults in the survey, conducted in the days immediately following the attacks, say the nation should not continue a program to resettle up to 10,000 Syrian refugees. Just 28 percent would keep the program with the screening process as it now exists, while 11 percent said they would favor a limited program to accept only Syrian Christians while excluding Muslims, a proposal Obama has dismissed as “shameful” and un-American.[quote]
[quote]Exclusive: US May Have Let ‘Dozens’ of Terrorists Into Country As Refugees

Besides demanding that the video be taken down, the Clinton campaign has demanded the personal contact information of the performers that appear in the recording. This is no laughing matter for club owner Jamie Masada, a comedy guru who opened Laugh Factory more than three decades ago and has been instrumental in launching the careers of many famous comics. “They threatened me,” Masada told Judicial Watch. “I have received complains before but never a call like this, threatening to put me out of business if I don’t cut the video.”

Masada told Judicial Watch that, as soon as the video got posted on the Laugh Factory website, he received a phone call from a “prominent” person inside Clinton’s campaign. “He said the video was disgusting and asked who put me up to this,” Masada said. The Clinton staffer, who Masada did not want to identify, also demanded to know the names and phone numbers of the comedians that appear in the video. Masada refused and hung up. He insists that the comedy stage is a sanctuary for freedom of speech no matter who is offended. “Just last night we had (Emmy-award winner) Dana Carvey doing Donald Trump and it was hilarious,” Masada said

The New York Times also cites over one hundred clinic bombings and incidents of arson, over three hundred invasions, and over four hundred incidents of vandalism between 1978 and 1993. The first clinic arson occurred in Oregon in March 1976 and the first bombing occurred in February 1978 in Ohio.”

The GOP’s approach to Syrian refugees is the same as their approach to voting rights: They’re willing to keep millions of American citizens from voting to prevent one or two theoretical acts of voting fraud. Christie’s assertion that he would even keep out orphaned infants laid bare the right’s real agenda: The problem isn’t that this flood of refugees might harbor a terrorist wannabe or two, but the fact they’re Mooos-lims. On that note, you’re entitled to prefer one website over another. And in matters of politics, you’re entitled to your opinions. But in matters of law, well, plain reading is a good place to start. And in so far as Nate Jackson of Patriot Post quotes from the US code, he can’t go too far wrong.
Problem is when he gets the rest of it wrong. You see virtually every single one of the refugee applicants can cite religious persecution – big time. I won’t bore you with the details (Mr. Jackson certainly didn’t). I don’t imagine you care. But the world is just a bit more complicated than “Christian vs. Muslim”. The people fleeing the areas controlled by Daesh are under death sentence for having the wrong religious beliefs. Thousands of their fellows have already been killed for these reasons. Some have been kept alive to serve as slaves until they managed to escape or die trying. They qualify under the chapter quoted by Mr. Jackson.

@125,
I’m finishing a daylight basement MIL this winter and hope to have it complete by Q2 of 2016. I’ll definitely open it up to a refugee family for as long as they need it – free of charge. My state is pretty generous with TANF and cash assistance both in terms of amount and duration. And the local employment economy is diverse and healthy, but they’ll need a car (almost no public transportation). So assuming the resettlement authorities consider it appropriate, as time draws near I’ll take the old Honda into our local dealer and get it put back in safe running order for a commuter. He’s a good guy and he’ll donate the labor with parts at cost. My guess is they’ll be back on their feet in about 12 to 18 months.

@160 “Christian vs. Muslim”
Wingers’ attempts to demonize Muslims based on the theoretical teachings of their religion just won’t fly for several reasons. One, Christians are as capable of bad behavior as Muslims are; history is replete with examples. Two, religion doesn’t drive this bad behavior, human nature does, and religion simply provides excuses and rationalizations for it. Three, Muslims don’t all behave the same, just as Christians don’t all behave the same; demonizing an entire group because of the few bad apples that exist in every barrel is the game played by those of weak intellect and weaker character. If you really want to keep our country safe from violence and terrorism, then you’d have to keep all humans out, including all those presently here. If you want America to be truly safe and peaceful, you’ll achieve that when nobody except rabbits, sparrows, and honeybees lives here. And for what it’s worth, you’re far more likely to be killed by a drunk driver, ordinary criminal, or homegrown mentally ill mass shooter with easy access to guns than by an imported ISIS terrorist. Or lightning and falling trees, for that matter.

“America is still the No. 1 killer in the world.” -Jeremiah Wright
Wright: ‘U.S. of KKKA’ knew about Pearl Harbor
Wright, again, called on God to damn America – or “white America, U.S. of KKKA,”
And, you far left extremist HorsesAsses have your panties in a twist about one speaker talking about the sin of homosexuality while all excited about letting in the terrorists who actually have decapitated gays, set gays on fire and thrown gays off tall buildings.
You are very confused.

These are called FACTS
Syrian Refugees Since Oct. 1: 346 Sunni Muslims, 5 Christians; 191 Males, 160 Females; 64 Men Ages 14 to 40:
Since the beginning of fiscal year 2016, which began on Oct. 1, the United States has admitted 351 refugees from Syria, according to State Department Refugee Processing Center data.
Of those 351 Syrian refugees, 346 refugees (98.6 percent) have been Sunni Muslims. Only 5 (1.4 percent) have been Christians. The Christians included three Catholics, one Orthodox and one of unspecified denomination.
The majority of the 351 Syrian refugees (191) have been male, the minority female (160.)
64 (or 18 percent of the total of 351) have been men between the ages of 14 and 40, according to State Department Refugee Processing Data Center.
Of those 1,682 admissions in FY 2015, Over the entire period since the Syrian conflict began, 2,224 Syrian refugees have been admitted to the U.S., as of Wednesday. Of them, 2,065 (92.8 percent) were Sunni Muslims, an additional 60 were “Moslem,” and 13 were Shia. Only 53 (2.4 percent) were Christian (including five Orthodox and four Catholics). The remaining religious breakdown was eight Jehovah’s Witness, six Zoroastrians, two Baha’i, three atheists, one Yazidi, seven “no religion” and six “other religion.”
Of the total 2,224 Syrian refugees admitted since March 2011, 480 (21.6 percent) are men aged between 14 and 40.
The age and gender breakdown is:
Under 14: 513 male 454 female
14-40: 480 male 471 female
Over 40: 181 male 125 female
Total: 1,174 male 1,050 female
Therefore, one in five of the Syrian refugees allowed entry into the U.S. since the conflict began are men aged 14-40, and the vast majority of them are Sunni Muslim.

@171 “The supreme irony – which of course will be lost on far left extremist liberals – is that the ONE GROUP that have historically, traditionally and is still most likely to sponsor refugees are CHRISTIANS and churches of all Christian denominations.”
The supreme irony is your ignorance of the well known fact that in the 1980s the largest refugee group in the world was Afghans fleeing the Soviet invasion of their country, 99.8% of whom were Muslims, and they were taken in by Pakistan and Iran, which are Muslim countries — a clearcut and unambiguous case of Muslims looking after 5.5 million of their fellow Muslims.

189
November 19spews:
Right thinking , very wrong but typically selfish reason:
[quote]Here’s the thing: to the average person, it seems perfectly reasonable to be suspicious of admitting Syrian refugees to the country. We know that ISIS would like to attack the US. We know that ISIS probably has the wherewithal to infiltrate a few of its people into the flood of refugees. And most voters have no idea how easy it is to get past US screening. They probably figure it’s pretty easy.
So to them it doesn’t seem xenophobic or crazy to call for an end to accepting Syrian refugees. It seems like simple common sense. After all, things changed after Paris.
Mocking Republicans over this—as liberals spent much of yesterday doing on my Twitter stream—seems absurdly out of touch to a lot of people.
[…]
Mocking it is the worst thing we could do. It validates all the worst stereotypes about liberals that we put political correctness ahead of national security. It doesn’t matter if that’s right or wrong. Ordinary people see the refugees as a common sense thing to be concerned about. We shouldn’t respond by essentially calling them idiots. That way lies electoral disaster.[quote] – Kevin Drum, Mother Jones … as reported on and linked from Town Hall

Roger Rabbitspews:
@173 From Wikipedia:
“McVeigh was raised Roman Catholic. During his childhood, he and his father attended Mass regularly. McVeigh was confirmed at the Good Shepherd Church in Pendleton, New York, in 1985. In a 1996 interview, McVeigh professed belief in ‘a God’, although he said he had ‘sort of lost touch with’ Catholicism and ‘I never really picked it up, however I do maintain core beliefs.’ In McVeigh’s biography American Terrorist, released in 2002, he stated that he did not believe in a hell and that science is his religion. In June 2001, a day before the execution, McVeigh wrote a letter to the Buffalo News identifying himself as agnostic. However, he took the Last Rites, administered by a priest, just before his execution.”
So while it’s true McVeigh self-identified as an agnostic in 2001, his own actions at that time call into question whether he really was one, and his actions up to that time convincingly demonstrate he had an enduring attachment to the Catholic religion in which he was raised. Also, what’s relevant is not what his religious beliefs were when he was executed, but what they were when he blew up the Murrah Building, and it seems pretty clear that he hadn’t lost his belief in God by then. So, once again, you are wrong about basic facts, and your arguments are based on non-factual assertions.
192
Stevespews:
“I’ve never even heard of a Dominionist or Reconstructionist Christians”
Synanon is described as having engaged in terrorism because key members committed terrorism acts in support of the organization.
Another clearly Christian, and clearly terrorist, group was/is the Irish Republican Army.
The reality is that human nature is the same everywhere, and terrorists come in all skin colors, religious creeds, and political orientations. Terrorism is a choice people make, unrestricted by such identities, to further a cause’s or group’s goals, whatever they are. Terrorists can be anyone, and from anywhere, and with any agenda. Terrorism is a tactic of militancy, not a religious practice.
196
Distant Replayspews:
“And most voters have no idea how easy it is to get past US screening.”
November 19,
since you seem to be willing to rely on Mr. Drum’s assessments of fear in the electorate, perhaps you’d also be willing to investigate those fears directly?
Take just a moment out of your busy labors of copying and pasting to look into the State Department requirements for the various kinds of visas available to any traveler seeking to merely enter the United States. And ask yourself which is the most significant threat: persons seeking to enter the United States to become permanent residents with refugee status; or persons seeking to enter the United States as tourists, or business travelers?
197
Roger Rabbitspews:
@190 A five-second Google search would have sufficed.
“Christian Reconstructionists advocate a theocratic government …; prominent advocates of Christian Reconstructionism have written that according to their understanding, God’s law approves of the death penalty not only for murder, but also for propagators of all forms of idolatry, active homosexuals, adulterers, practitioners of witchcraft, and blasphemers, and perhaps even recalcitrant youths …. Rousas John Rushdoony wrote in his magnum opus, The Institutes of Biblical Law: ‘The heresy of democracy has since [the days of colonial New England] worked havoc in church and state’ and: ‘Christianity and democracy are inevitably enemies’, and elsewhere said that ‘Christianity is completely and radically anti-democratic; it is committed to spiritual aristocracy’ ….”
@191,
I think the point should be that McVeigh was born and raised a white Christian, that his identity, ideas, and thoughts about the United States and it’s government were a product of that upbringing, and that his decision to become a mass terrorist was no less a product of his society, culture and upbringing than any other terrorist.
Bigots like November 19 demand that we agree with them that some cultures and some societies (and probably some ethnicities and some races) are fundamentally inferior to others in some basic moral sense. And that this inferiority is endemic to these societies and cultures. And therefor it would be valid to “sort” human beings according to their cultural and social (and racial and ethnic) origins.
With only a small effort I’m sure we could find full throated defenses of ethnic or racial profiling authored by this person. Ultimately, it is all of a larger and much simpler whole: traditional belief in the superiority of white, Christian identity.

MORE Democrat right thinking, but for very wrong and typically selfish reason:
[quote]The legislation was threatened with a veto from President Obama, but passed with a veto-proof majority. No one wants to look like they’re soft on national security entering an election year. (via AP):
In a stinging rebuke to President Barack Obama by Republicans as well as members of his own party, the House ignored a veto threat Thursday and overwhelmingly approved Republican legislation erecting fresh hurdles for Syrian and Iraqi refugees trying to enter the United States.
Dozens of Democrats joined Republicans as the House passed the measure 289-137. That margin exceeded the two-thirds majority required to override a veto, and it came despite a rushed, early morning visit to the Capitol by top administration officials in a futile attempt to limit Democratic defections for the measure.
Thursday’s vote came six days after a burst of bombings and shootings in Paris killed 129 people, wounded many more and revived post-9/11 jitters in the U.S. and Europe. The attacks have turned the question of admitting people fleeing war-torn Syria and Iraq into a high-stakes political issue in both the United States and Europe, and many congressional Democrats were willing to vote against their party’s lame duck president for fear of angering voters nervous about security at home.
As the bill heads to the Senate, Politico adds that the procedural hurdle in the upper chamber might not be an issue:
…Democratic insiders expect 60 members of their caucus to support the GOP measure. Some rank-and-file Democrats are concerned about looking soft on national security. Already the Blue Dog Coalition — a group of moderate Democrats — has announced that it will support the bill.
The legislation, the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act, would require the FBI, Homeland Security Department and director of national intelligence to certify to Congress that any refugee from Syria or Iraq is “not a threat to the security of the United States” before being allowed to settle in the United States. President Barack Obama has proposed allowing 10,000 Syrian refugees to enter the country this year, part of the Western response to the wave of millions of refugees fleeing that country’s bloody civil war and Islamic State-related violence.[quote]
The GOP doesn’t want fellow Americans threatened and or killed by terrorist.
The Democrats don’t want to look soft on national security for fear of losing more power in the next election.

Those five Syrians with stolen passports arrested in Honduras are guilty of something, all right: Trying to sneak into the U.S. illegally. But nothing else.
“Four of the five Syrians detained in this Central American country with stolen Greek passports this week are students and all say they were fleeing their country in hopes of refuge in the United States, Honduran authorities said Thursday. … [T]he fifth Syrian is a professional worker, and all five will appear before a judge on charges of falsifying documents.
“The men were detained Tuesday at the airport in the capital of Tegucigalpa by agents acting on an alert from Interpol about the passports. Honduran authorities have not turned up any criminal history for the Syrians, and there has been no indication that they are suspected of anything except carrying stolen documents.”
Had they made it into the U.S., we would’ve been saddled with five more illegal fruit pickers whose cheap labor helps ensure that Americans enjoy the world’s lowest-priced groceries.

Think about what issues are consuming the GOP in this election cycle:
Whether a defiant county clerk has to issue same-sex marriage licenses;
Whether Syrian children are a national security threat;
Whether Mexican lettuce pickers and their families should be forcibly rounded up and deported back to Mexico;
Whether Hillary Clinton discussed official business in her private e-mails;
Whether Planned Parenthood should receive Medicaid funds for providing non-abortion health services to poor women.
Does this look like a party capable of governing the world’s largest economy, its most powerful military, and dealing with real threats?

Roger Rabbitspews:
It doesn’t matter what Democrats do; anything a Democrat does, Republicans will complain about, simply because a Democrat did it. All you get from Republicans is an endless stream of negativity. This is how bigotry gets us killed. It’s a huge distraction and it isn’t capable of fixing the problem.
When the engine quits and the aircraft stalls the competent pilot doesn’t waste time complaining about maintenance, arguing with the co-pilot about fuel consumption rates, or demanding that baggage and other cargo be ejected. I’m sure it must for Puddy. It’s the only way he can find out of the moral blind alley he’s in.
He wants some Muslims to die. If not because of Paris, he’ll always have another reason. But he also identifies as a “righteous” man “of God” who adheres to his sect’s teachings about killing and blood lust. So it’s naturally very important for him to see “terrorism” as a limited case moral problem particular to Islam – which he conflates with all people in the region, regardless of faith. That way he can justify his blood lust in terms of self defense. He can claim he’d prefer not to slaughter Muslims, only he has no choice. He can long for the suffering and death of vast numbers of innocent children as a simple matter of self-preservation and escape supernatural judgment.

Because the VAST MAJORITY of Christians don’t run around quoting all the Bible death passages while 200 million of world wide Muslims support Jihad! About 14% of worldwide Muslims have no problems with violence to get their aims… There are 1.57 Billion Muslims so * .14 = 219,800,000 support jihad.

@246,
Just like Heilary keeps tabs with the Clinton War Room!
In his latest screed demanding that The President put all the Syrian refugees in a bag and toss them off a bridge, Rick Lowry refers to the Paris attacks as ” a sophisticated terrorist assault on a major Western city”.
Is that last bit really true? It’s funny sometimes how some media folks all fall into lazy habits of using the same descriptive terms about important and complicated events. Paris is a major Western city. I’ll give Lowry that. And the attackers were terrorists. That’s fair. But that also may give us some clues as to whether or not this counts as “sophisticated”. Terrorism is not easy to define. We use it loosely and out of convenience. So we may refuse to call a politically motivated mass shooting at a school an act of terrorism. Even though it certainly is.
We don’t refer to the carpet bombing of Dresden as “terrorism”, even though as The Fuckwad has avowed, it’s purpose was to strike terror in a civilian population – strategically. Clearly, terrorism has something to do with conflict asymmetry. Terrorists resort to tactics with limited objectives precisely because force limitations leave them no other effective options. So in that sense, terrorist attacks are inherently rather unsophisticated. But everything is relative. And some such attacks are more “sophisticated” than others. Were these attacks among the most “sophisticated”?
I think this is a ruse intended to make us feel like something can easily be done to prevent such attacks. It’s not that hard to coordinate a group of people with mobile phones. It’s not that hard to get semi-automatic assault rifles with large capacity mags (trivially easy in the U.S.). And it’s not that hard to find large gatherings of innocent civilians in unsecured venues. These things don’t even take much planning. Such attacks aren’t “sophisticated” and they really don’t have to be. That’s the whole point. That’s what makes it terrorism.

entirely as predicted. United is only the fourth largest payer operating in the exchanges as measured by number of insured. But smaller as measured by number of plans. They can’t seem to figure out how to compete in an open marketplace. Their primary business model focuses on marketing to very large institutional employers and unions, where they charge larger markups and use their market clout to gouge providers, finding profit in the middle. Individual consumers have been reluctant to pay the premiums needed to support such a model, and simultaneously have had a hard time finding provider networks willing to accept United’s low reimbursements.
Meanwhile lean, not-for-profit cooperatives keep picking up new members and expanding their networks of providers.

According to an account of the meeting in The Endgame: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Iraq, from George W. Bush to Barack Obama, by New York Times correspondent Michael Gordon and General Bernard E. Trainor, Obama questioned “whether al Qaeda in Iraq presented a threat to the United States.” He said: “If AQI has morphed into a kind of mafia then they are not going to be blowing up buildings.” Petraeus pointed to an attempted attack in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2007, as an example of AQI’s reach and expressed concern about “the potential of AQI to expand its influence to Syria and Lebanon.” Obama was unmoved. “The al Qaeda leadership is not here in Iraq. They are there,” Obama said, pointing to Pakistan on a map.
It was an instructive exchange. Obama, a first-term senator with no experience in military or intelligence matters, challenged the general who had beaten back a jihadist insurgency in Iraq, led a remarkable turnaround in the country, and was a leading figure in America’s broader war on terror. The assessments Petraeus offered were based on years of personal experience guiding U.S. troops against jihadist armies generally, and Al Qaeda in Iraq specifically, and they were bolstered by mountains of intelligence reporting on the enemy, its objectives, and its practices.
Basically Obummer said”I know better” because I am a DUMMOCRETIN! We see that happening now with this sadministration statements that 129 people dead in Paris “is a setback”.
Didin’t Kerry just claim this? “I’m confident if we stay steady, keep our heads in thinking creatively but also being strong and committed to our fundamental values, we’re going to defeat Daesh. We always said it will take time. We began our fight against al Qaeda in 2001 and it took us quite a few years before we were able to eliminate Osama bin Laden and the top leadership and neutralize them as an effective force. We hope to do Daesh much faster than that and we think we have an ability to do that. So that’s the effort, and we’re going to continue.”

Huh.

My God, is the batshit crazy loon ever stupid. Dumbest SOB on the planet!!
I didn’t use the RCP average. I didn’t even link to RCP. I pointed to a drop by Carson over the course of two polls conducted by one polling company to which I linked. It shows Carson plummeting. Trump is picking up points. Trump is now polling at twice Carson. The crazy loon didn’t like what he saw, he hates truth, so he started making shit up again.
Truth always causes the batshit insane loon’s head to implode. That’s why he’s always making shit up. However, I don’t know why he even bothers to lie. It’s not like lying his ass off has ever kept his head from imploding or anything.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@25 You miss the true significance of that poll. It’s very interesting that Rubio does no better against Hillary than Carson or Cruz, and barely better (within the margin of error) than Trump. I’d say banning “baby talk”, the nightmare of decoder rings, isn’t about limiting freedom of speech so much as it is about pulling the hook on a very tired act, or better yet, staging an intervention. I’d go with the latter because I believe the loon has become batshit fucking insane.

“Authorities have not yet determined if there is any connection between the five Syrians detained and those involved in the terror attacks in Paris last week.”

Little wonder that the loon’s head is imploding. Ben Carson – the butt of America’s jokes. Plummeting in the polls. Because that’s what he deserves.

@101,
How does that happen “accidentally”?
If the serial blundering, perfidy, and lazy attention to detail of The Fuckwad is any indication of Carson’s talent pool, I’m sure accidents will happen. But somebody in his campaign actually had to start with a standard US map and then proceed to fuck it up. That wouldn’t seem to happen “accidentally”
Do his own insiders hate him that much?
Steve spews:
Trump is having a field day destroying what remains of Carson’s campaign.
“You brought it up. I did not bring it up,” Trump told a reporter. “But when The New York Times writes a devastating piece … when The New York Times says essentially, from his top adviser and a couple others, that he’s essentially incapable of learning foreign policy. I mean, that’s pretty sad.”
“If you read the front page of The New York Times today, they said about Ben Carson that he’s unable to understand foreign policy,” Trump said. “You know, his people actually said this, that he’s unable to comprehend or understand foreign policy. It was a devastating story. It’s all over the place.”

Carson’s lies and batshit insane remarks have dug his political grave. Leave it to Trump to shovel dirt on the coffin.

Yep, seems like they did, and it took only a few days. This while France and America both have socialist leaders. Put conservatives in charge and 10 years from now you’ll still be counting the days …
Roger Rabbit spews:
@85 The answer is obvious, Puffy. If a black guy is walking down the street with his hands in his pockets, and a cop is watching him, he must be up to no good because the cop wouldn’t be watching him if he was on the up and up, right? November 19 spews:

Jackson.

@160 “Christian vs. Muslim”

November 19 spews:

@173 From Wikipedia:
However, he took the Last Rites, administered by a priest, just before his execution.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh
So while it’s true McVeigh self-identified as an agnostic in 2001, his own actions at that time call into question whether he really was one, and his actions up to that time convincingly demonstrate he had an enduring attachment to the Catholic religion in which he was raised. Also, what’s relevant is not what his religious beliefs were when he was executed, but what they were when he blew up the Murrah Building, and it seems pretty clear that he hadn’t lost his belief in God by then. So, once again, you are wrong about basic facts, and your arguments are based on non-factual assertions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synanon
Synanon is described as having engaged in terrorism because key members committed terrorism acts in support of the organization.
Another clearly Christian, and clearly terrorist, group was/is the Irish Republican Army.
The reality is that human nature is the same everywhere, and terrorists come in all skin colors, religious creeds, and political orientations. Terrorism is a choice people make, unrestricted by such identities, to further a cause’s or group’s goals, whatever they are. Terrorists can be anyone, and from anywhere, and with any agenda. Terrorism is a tactic of militancy, not a religious practice.

Take just a moment out of your busy labors of copying and pasting to look into the State Department requirements for the various kinds of visas available to any traveler seeking to merely enter the United States.

@191,
I think the point should be that McVeigh was born and raised a white Christian, that his identity, ideas, and thoughts about the United States and it’s government were a product of that upbringing, and that his decision to become a mass terrorist was no less a product of his society, culture and upbringing than any other terrorist.

“The men were detained Tuesday at the airport in the capital of Tegucigalpa by agents acting on an alert from Interpol about the passports. Honduran authorities have not turned up any criminal history for the Syrians, and there has been no indication that they are suspected of anything except carrying stolen documents.”

Whether Mexican lettuce pickers and their families should be forcibly rounded up and deported back to Mexico;
Whether Hillary Clinton discussed official business in her private e-mails;
Whether Planned Parenthood should receive Medicaid funds for providing non-abortion health services to poor women.
Does this look like a party capable of governing the world’s largest economy, its most powerful military, and dealing with real threats?
Roger Rabbit spews:
It doesn’t matter what Democrats do; anything a Democrat does, Republicans will complain about, simply because a Democrat did it. All you get from Republicans is an endless stream of negativity. This is how bigotry gets us killed. It’s a huge distraction and it isn’t capable of fixing the problem.
When the engine quits and the aircraft stalls the competent pilot doesn’t waste time complaining about maintenance, arguing with the co-pilot about fuel consumption rates, or demanding that baggage and other cargo be ejected.

Good thing you conceal your identity on these threads. Otherwise the elders would have a big problem with you. But I’m sure you’ve got them hoodwinked. They’re probably just as credulous as Carson.

No need – to point to any “Christian” flying a plane into any building….that only killed a couple of thousand and didn’t target anyone individual for their individuality.
