The purpose of impeachment would not be to remove president peeeeepeeeee from office. It’s important to just get that out of the way. Senate Child Molesters will never vote for impeachment no matter how strong the case the House delivers to them. This is pure tribal politics for them now. So really impeachment can only hope for a couple of things: to lay down a marker in history for the precise moment when the GOP officially and publicly abandoned the Constitution in favor of tribe; to politically weaken GOP Senators running in blue states; and to weaken president peeepeeee in the key swings ahead of 2020.
Accomplishing any of that depends upon how effectively House Dems can make their case to the voters on the merits of impeachment. The last two weeks have not shown much promise. Too many House members are more interested in their fifteen minutes. And if all House Republicans have to do to shift the media narrative is yell and scream and cry and get into arguments then there is very little point in going through with it only to come out the other side with the Senate voting EXONERATION!!!!, etc.
I think it’s entirely possible that the process could be managed to achieve the stated objectives. But too many senior House members won’t allow that because it would mean asking them to step aside and let the Pros from Dover run the hearings. Maybe Pelosi could do more to change that. But if you consider that a sizable percentage of House members currently favoring impeachment do so largely for the opportunity it presents for them to elevate their own profile, any efforts Pelosi might make could reduce support.
