Elijah Dominic McDotcomspews:
I think it’s important for Democrats to study the close losses in this mid term to understand differences in strategy and spending and recognize what works and what doesn’t. But we should be very careful not to be knee jerk or shallow in that analysis.
States, districts, voters, and candidates all differ dramatically. And it’s very easy to filter out and cherry pick in order to arrive at a conclusion that fits your preferred world view (probably nobody does that better than President BoneSpurs). And one thing that stands out from that kind of practical comparison of strategy is the effect of mobilization in these mids and the primaries that preceded them.
If we define success not simply in terms of electoral outcome but in broader terms of closing gaps and overcoming deficits of name recognition, support, money, and voter confidence some of the closest races (a few of which might still win) are some of the most successful. And they did it by defying conventional strategies and focusing very early on mobilization. That should come as no surprise. Many of these campaigns were staffed and assisted by teams who came from the Obama campaigns.
These campaigns, many of which won but a few of which lost in deep red Trump states and districts, leave behind them a legacy of groundwork and infrastructure to support future campaigns and candidate recruitment. There are natural limitations to this strategy. Demographically some states and districts simply may not yield a sufficient number of educated, progressive, culturally diverse voters to respond to this strategy of progressive voter mobilization. But looking at the results of last week it’s really impressive to see where this worked well, and how the work promises to have a lasting effect on vote composition in those states and districts.
Statewide races can be expected to take longer and require more work and investment to yield up lasting results. And while these mids show amazing progress in key states like GA, TX, FL, AZ, NV, MI, WI, etc. we must also recognize that progress in such states will come incrementally.
O’Roarke leaves behind him 1.6 million newly registered voters in Texas, thousands of trained and motivated staffers and volunteers and hundreds of thousands of donors. Even in Georgia where Republicans closed polling places, sabotaged voting machines, and canceled and destroyed registrations almost as fast as eligible voters could file them, hundreds of thousands of newly registered voters participated in this election. Teams of community mobilization volunteers remain behind. And lawyers from across the Untied States who pitched in to monitor and help prepare legal challenges to the voter disenfranchisement efforts of corrupt Republican state officials are engaged for the long term.
Even the “blue” west coast we can learn from these campaigns. Deep red rural areas of west coast states can be transformed with mobilization. Anyone who has ever lived or worked in these areas knows that they are not nearly as “conservative” as they often appear. But many of the more educated, younger, and more diverse voters or potential voters in these areas are ignored by Democrats. And they have been for decades.
Old guard traditional campaign consultants will argue against all of this. They’ll have the backing of local media who rely on massive infusions of advertising dollars every two years. They appear to be completely wrong. They probably had a lot to do with creating the debacle of the Trump presidency.

@27 “I think it’s important for Democrats to study the close losses in this mid term to understand differences in strategy and spending and recognize what works and what doesn’t. But we should be very careful not to be knee jerk or shallow in that analysis.”
That’s okay, as far as it goes, but strategy should never trump character or principle. We know we could appeal to a sizable number of Republican voters by adopting Nazi and KKK ideas, but that doesn’t mean we should. Democrats need to do what they’ve always done, defend the working classes against Republican greed, and get that message out to the voters. Lately, Republican attacks on workers have been so blatant and obvious they’re making that job easier for us.
31
Elijah Dominic McDotcomspews:
It’s beginning to look as if Trump/Whitaker are hoping to lull everyone to sleep before they try to kill the OSC.
The problem with that is all the federal court action over the coming weeks and months that promise to keep it front and center. Mueller will be presenting a brief next Monday in response to Andrew Miller’s (Roger Stone’s work wife) subpoena challenge.
This will be the first time we see the OSC and multiple amicus arguments directed at the scope of Whitaker’s supervision. And at least among the amicus crowd the plurality of arguments seem settled that Whitaker, as an “inferior officer” not subject to Senate confirmation, simply may not supervise the OSC at all, leaving Rosenstein in charge.
Don’t take my word for it. That’s the opinion of the guy who wrote the regulations for the creation of the OSC. Ironically, it is also the opinion of President RageTweet’s “favorite Supreme Court Justice”, the one with the pubic hair fascination.
It’s going to be kind of tricky for the White House to find a quiet moment to sneak in and rummage through Mueller’s office and piss in the coffee urn in between subpoenas, summonses, and sealed indictments.

Appealing to racists is almost the opposite of what these campaigns did. Rather than try to persuade backward, ignorant, racist, EEEN-DEEE-PEN-DUNCE, they focused on mobilization of progressive voters, and registration of new voters.
Bannon’s strategy was not dissimilar in some respects, at least in terms of voter mobilization. Except that his (and Putin’s) mobilization efforts were narrowly focused on racists and old people (resentment politics) and emphasized division. Democrats have some enormous potential advantages when it comes to voter mobilization. Not the least of which is that our messaging can and should be broadly positive and inclusive.
And it wont result in anyone driving a car into a crowd of peaceful marchers or shooting up a Synagogue. Which is a nice plus.

41
Roger Rabbitspews:
@40 “What was today’s fart? I didn’t bother to look.”
The euro and pound dropped 1% against the dollar. Brexit is the underlying cause. The mechanics are complicated, but among other things, a stronger dollar cuts into profits earned abroad, which describes about 40% of all S&P 500 earnings.
Really, no single cause. Trade concerns and interest rates also weighed. Falling crude prices imply a global slowdown. Domestic profits are being squeezed by rising costs. Investors are concerned that profit margins and profit growth have peaked (although earnings are still in an upward trend, just not as fast). Slowing stock buybacks mean less support for stock prices.
Big picture, investors aren’t comfortable with higher valuations; I see the market leveling off here. Today’s drop simply gave up the bulk of last week’s gains. (The Dow gained 2.8% last week and lost 2.3% today, the S&P gained 2.1% last week and lost 2.0% today.) So in terms of the indexes, this is really nothing more than a return to the pre-election status quo.

Did I say it does? Have you seen me defend it? How many times have I posted, “Hey, I didn’t create this system, I’m just going with the flow”? I’m merely a lowly leech lapping up blood spilled by others.
“Economy great, but yet it sucks”
The economy is not great, it sucks. Growth is slowing. Wages aren’t rising, only inflation is. People don’t have job security. Productivity growth and labor participation are the lowest in decades. All three major sectors of the economy — government, business, and households — are heavily indebted. Trendline growth is stuck at the inflation rate. Two of the economy’s biggest drivers, housing and autos, are falling off a cliff. An auto subprime lending crisis is brewing. Anyone who thinks this economy is “great” is an idiot.
“Dollar strong – great! But then, dollar strong so no, it sucks…but we don’t want a weak dollar either.”
Strong dollar means more imports, weak dollar helps exports.

Sure the missile launches have stopped, but that was because the North figured out what they needed in their previous tests.
The real thing they wanted was to get the US to stop war games and to pull the US troops out.
Kim has taken a page from Ronald “Raygun”. Remember the Strategic Defense Initiative, a.k.a., “Star Wars”. Ronnie bluffed that system and Russian blinked. The thought of it working got them to give up. SDI would have never worked at that time, given the state of the technology. The Russians had their doubts but rather than go bankrupt, they gave up.
Now Kim has the threat that one of his nukes can hit the US, Japan, or Guam, but most likely it can’t. What he can do is stage weapons like he has and overrun the south and finish what his grandfather started. That is a whole lot easier if the US is not immediately in theater.
Trump was all too willing to give Kim exactly what he wanted and Kim didn’t h ave to give up anything. Kim has played to Trump’s vanity and desire for short term “winning” while the entire time Kim has kept his eye on the long term goal of a single and unified Korean Peninsula, just not the one that the Western world has envisioned.
Trump, what a moron.

1/2 – We are investigating an alleged assault on a gay latino immigrant committed by T. Carlson and/or members of his inner circle at a club in VA in Oct. It likely includes underage drinking in violation of VA law. Link to a portion of the incident:

I wonder how long it will be before Avenatti claims that Tucker Carlson’s daughter was drinking and therefore that whoring cunt had it coming to her.

I mean, it’s not like having a law degree has done anything for Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit’s claims to be an attorney.

Guess that makes Susan Collins a de facto Democrat for the next 24 months. And Gardner. And Tillis. And Kyl/McRacist. And Perdue.
Should be enough to block the Whitaker nomination. At least he can always fall back on selling “Nutraceuticals” on the internet to aging, impotent, white racists living in squalid trailers.

However, we can safely predict the security guard’s family are about to become multimillionaires.

@6 So if you have a “foreign sounding” name, you can’t possibly be eligible to vote, amirite? You shouldn’t have any trouble getting by the poll judges with a name like “Boob,” though. There’s no voting requirement to have any brains. Sixty million Republican voters are living proof of that. It doesn’t take brains to be a doctor, either. You are living proof of that.

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:
Roger Rabbit spews:

Elijah Dominic McDotcom spews:

30,
Appealing to racists is almost the opposite of what these campaigns did.

It depends on what field of study the MD is doing? Research on drugs and cures for diseases, probably could count them as a scientist.
Radiologists? Most likely not since they usually can pass their boards and get certified by using a coloring book and crayons.
Radiologist were the ones cheering Madam Curie’s death because they finally had their answer on how much radiation was too much.

So that may leave you idiots worse off than before your petulant man-baby rage-fired his AG the day after suffering a massive electoral ass-kicking. Which is probably just fine if all you really care about is building Whitaker’s CV so he can raise enough money to lose a Senate race in 2020.

Roger Rabbit spews:
Yawn. Scratch. Dumbfuck should’ve shorted GE at 23. It’s not my fault he didn’t.

“This is like Goldilocks and the Three Bears trying to figure out which bed is more comfortable (do I have my kid’s stories mixed up)”

Meanwhile, Trump was played in a HHHuuuuugggggeee way.: https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/12/politics/north-korea-hidden-missile-bases/index.html
