1. The GOP plans to borrow $1.5 trillion, of which about $1.2 trillion will go to the top 1%, and most of the rest to the top 10%.
2. The middle class will get tax cuts averaging about $300 to $1,200 per household in 2019, although about 27% in the upper-middle-class income bracket will pay higher taxes immediately, and for the rest these cuts disappear by 2025 after everyone else also will pay higher taxes. So, in effect, these “tax cuts” are merely loans you have to pay back a few years from now.
3. But that’s not all. Because the $1.5 trillion has to be offset by spending cuts, the middle class has to begin paying out of pocket for the 1%’s tax cuts immediately. Some of this will come out of Medicare.

If they do, the public’s only recourse is to choose someone else to represent them in Congress in next year’s midterm elections.
6. Trump’s strategy to forestall a midterm electoral disaster is to prevent as many Americans from voting as possible. That’s what his deceptively labeled “Election Integrity Commission” is all about. That’s why he put the nation’s leading Republican vote suppression practitioner in charge of it. That’s why every member of that so-called commission who still has any integrity is raising alarms about its work. And, with a longer view in mind, Trump also is poised to put a man who doesn’t believe in competitive elections in charge of the census that will determining redistricting for the next decade.
