I absolutely agree that there exists a solid, measurable, and not insignificant number of Trump voters who neeeed this in order to explain to themselves how they came to vote twice for a nominee who told them he was a rapist. That part is undeniable.
But I have not seen it have any useful effect on explaining those votes to non-Trump voters and/or prior non-voters in general. When we look at each round of voter file data, and then drill into those respondents beliefs and motivations, the picture that consistently emerges is that non-Trump voters generally and universally assign the candidate’s characteristics to his supporters.
There is literally no recognition on any metric of any “lesser of two evils” motive. Presented with the non-binary option of declining to vote for either candidate, the non-Trump voter assumes very consistently that the Trump voter supports Trump. Because they chose to. And they followed through on that support. By voting for him. Even after he told them he was a rapist.
So the “lesser of two evils” rationale, if it operates much at all, operates exclusively within the domain of other Trump voters. And there it does as much harm as good – perhaps more. Because it provides a constant reminder to the other Trump voters who openly support Trump what that support really means – that they openly support an unmotivated, irrational, ignorant racist who brags about having committed rape and who sought to overthrow the republic and install a violent authoritarian junta.
I see nothing wrong with this.

Something very important to notice and keep in mind here is that according to the state level statistics low wage unemployment is dropping faster than higher wage unemployment.
In other words, the people most likely to “have it too good” under pandemic unemployment payments according to the Republican Blame the Poor narrative, are returning to the workforce faster. People with advanced job skills have always been reluctant to take low wage jobs with terrible bosses, no benefits, irregular schedules, and shitty hours. It has always been difficult to fill these kinds of positions. And for someone with a college degree and/or post high school advanced training, taking such a job, even briefly, can harm their employment prospects in their career field. That’s why these low wage service sector employers have relied upon recent immigrants and guest workers for many years.
When governors in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wyoming cut off benefits they are merely going to trigger a brain drain exodus.
A skilled and experienced hydraulic technician waiting for her heavy equipment job in Montana to resume is not going to work the counter at DQ. She’ll miss the Rockies and Big Sky Country. She’ll miss fly fishing on her way home after work. But she’s going to move.
Only two or three of those states can “afford” it, to whatever extent a state can afford to lose advanced skill workers. And they will be moving to states with active, growing economic sectors offering better paying jobs that demand more skilled and experienced workers. Blue and blue shifting states. So a half dozen deep Red states become a deeper shade of red. And states like Texas, Georgia, and Colorado gain a whole bunch of new college educated voters.

Those consulting checks keep rolling in like PPP money too. So much I donate some of my time back. A client asked me to do something, it took all of a 1/2 to 1 hour. He is closing out his Project, so he requested I bill him, and since he doesn’t know if his client will need anything further from him that he will need from me, he says to me add 2 hours to the bill to account for anything in the future.
My response – I told him I wasn’t even planning on billing the 1/2 to 1 hour of work that I did. I told him that I was all set and not going to bill anything.
He then told me that it was a great pleasure working with me and hopes to work with me again on the next Project! Ha! If I feel like it!
