For 13 months, I was married to an M-16. I ate with it, slept with it, and took it with me everywhere. Including the outhouse. Every day, I cleaned and checked its working parts with the diligence and devotion of a new father changing his baby’s diapers. I did everything in my power to keep it happy.
(It was a piece of shit anyway. I went through two M-16s in Vietnam, and neither of them was ever able to fire off an entire 19-round magazine* without jamming.
*Yes, I know M-16s had 20-round magazines in those days. They had defective springs, so we always stripped off 1 round to lessen the magazine’s contribution to the jamming problem, although that wasn’t the only thing causing those damn rifles to jam frequently.)
I have no feelings of affection for military assault rifles. Maybe it’s just familiarity breeding contempt, but in any case, I’ve had my fill of them. I have no desire to ever see one, hold one, or shoot one again.
When people claim they just like to shoot them, I don’t see what the attraction is. They go “bang” and kick up a spurt of dust behind the target. That’s it, nothing more. Where’s the thrill in that? Nor can I see spending hard-earned money feeding their appetite for ammunition.
Maybe those people just like to intimidate their neighbors and people who think differently from them. We know criminals and madmen like to shoot cops and schoolchildren with them. If that isn’t an argument for banning civilian possession of the damn things, then what is?
If you want to shoot military weapons, talk to a recruiter. He’ll discuss opportunities to shoot people with them, if that’s what you’re really after. But if a Democrat replaces Trump in 2021, those opportunities may become limited or nonexistent, so if this is what you want, don’t delay, enlist now, because it’ll take at least a year to get through training and be deployed.
In the last three years a kind of cottage industry has arisen mining the notion that Trump’s win in 2016 was somehow the result of heretofore overlooked masses of “deplorables” quietly and not-so-quietly organizing themselves in dank recesses of the internet and social media. Companies like Vice Media have built their business model around such a myth. As 2020 draws nearer it’s worth grounding these kinds of myths in a few basic facts.
Voter file data from the actual election itself (as opposed to hangar rallies, performative media wannabes, and self-promoting social media “influencers”) consistently indicate that Trump’s narrow electoral college win was driven by the same fucking people who always vote for Republicans every four years. Older, whiter, relatively less educated, yet financially stable voters who live well outside of major metropolitan areas. The “white flight” generation of post WWII worker bees who systematically abandoned cities to avoid school desegregation and neighborhood desegregation.
There is no secret Pepe Army out there. Never has been. Never will be. Vast Russian bot-farms, yes. Massive electoral interference campaigns from foreign espionage agencies, yes. Huge sums of foreign cash laundered into the campaigns by the NRA, yes. And that probably contributed to the sense of influence given to these sad, incel weirdos. But sad freaks like C’ville DeathCar driver never even vote. They may spend hours sewing badges onto Fred Perry polos and working up “dank memes” to “pwn the leftists”, but actual participation in the democratic processes are apparently not violent and “hands on” enough for them. Also, no breakfast cereal.
So while these guys pose a very real risk to shoot up a theme park, bomb a synagogue, or vandalize a pre-school, they pose no risk at all at the ballot box. Sadly, that risk lives next door, drives a pickup with an NRA sticker, works at the post office or the public works dept. and spends a week fishing in Canada every summer. They’ve voted Republican every four years since Reagan. And they always will. And the “one simple trick” to eliminating that risk is to outnumber them next year.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: There are millions of AK-47s and AR-15s in circulation. Here’s how you get them under control:
1. Prevent manufacture of “ghost guns” by banning online sales of gun parts; require parts to be purchased through licensed gun dealers only.
2. Create a paper trail for every assault rifle in private hands by requiring they be registered at any local law enforcement agency, which then feeds the information into a national database accessible to all law enforcement agencies.
3. Authorize police to do registration checks on assault rifles without showing probable cause and to confiscate any unregistered assault rifles. The owners must then register them in order to reclaim their weapons. Any confiscated weapons unclaimed after a specified period (say 90 days) will be destroyed.
4. Require re-registration upon any change of ownership.
5. Authorize police to confiscate any assault rifle found in possession of a person to whom it is not registered. This means you can’t loan your AR-15 to the MS-13 gang member down the street whom you’re friends with.
The inconvenience to gun owners is slight compared to the effect on public safety of keeping these guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. You can still buy, own, and shoot an AK-47 or AR-15 at your favorite target range. If it’s registered, and you keep it under your control, you won’t be hassled. Registration checks will be like license plate checks; if your registration is in order, and Tommy down the street doesn’t have your firearm, you’re good to go.
Why would any reasonable person to object to this?
Sure, the government could use a national database of assault rifles to come for your AK-47 or AR-15 if a tyrannical government has it in for you. But in that scenario, they’re going to come for you anyway, and if they come with tanks and squads of soldiers in armored vehicles, how much good will your assault rifle do you anyway? The Philadelphia drug dealer who shot 6 cops with an AK-47 yesterday is now in jail and very lucky to still be alive. Does anyone believe the Holocaust could’ve been prevented by Jews armed with pistols, rifles, and shotguns?
Doctor Dumbfuck never misses an opportunity to rail against Roger Rabbit whenever cops got shot by criminals armed with military-style assault rifles, but never once has suggested doing anything to get these weapons under control and keep them out of the hands of the criminals who are shooting cops with them.
Notice I didn’t say ban them, just get them under control. But for some, including Mitch McConnell, even asking for universal background checks is too much. When you get right down to it, it’s The Whiteness.
It’s probably the greatest irony of our age that white males are statistically the most likely to die from a gunshot. Of course, those are mostly suicides. But it is without a doubt the white male obsession with guns and “self defense” that is responsible. White males have greater, and more frequent access to firearms than any other group. And the history of that relationship with firearms tells the story of why white men are literally dying for the sake of protecting that relationship.
It’s no coincidence that the only times and situations when white men agreed to support firearms safety regulations coincided with black men openly arming themselves. And it is the emergence of the qualified immunity standard in modern law enforcement that is responsible for restoring the assymetry in access, availability, and open display. No sane black man today would deliberately arm himself with a high capacity semi-automatic tactical rifle and openly carry it into a public place. And yet that precise thing is a daily routine for “open carry” advocates hoping to test local law enforcement. Amazingly (not really) they never get shot by police.
The Right to Bear is pretty much exclusively reserved for white people only, if not by law, then certainly by effect. Black folks, often forced to live in bad neighborhoods and take dangerous jobs are faced with a fraught relationship with firearms when compared to white men. They have to acknowledge that acquiring a gun to protect themselves is more likely to get them killed by police. White men face no such choice. It is truly one of the last great privileges of The Whiteness. And it is a privilege many white men are apparently happy to die for.
