Open Thread Thread

It seems recently the comments in non-open threads have been pretty derailed pretty quickly. And so I’d just like to remind people that there is a comment policy that bans, among other things, “deliberately off-topic comments (except in “open threads”), as well as pointless comments on these comments.” And since that time there has been a greater effort to put up open threads. We have at least 3 open threads a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) and the Drinking Liberally and Friday Night Multimedia threads. There’s usually one near the top, so please use them.

    HA needs a new Open Thread every day. This isn’t Stefan’s sucky little blog which gets 2 or 3 comments a week if he’s lucky. You get hundreds of posts here, and any comment in a
    thread more than 24 hours old won’t be seen or read by anyone.

    Roger,

    Thanks for the suggestion (again!). Two things.

    First, the Sunday Bible Study is also an Open Thread. Therefore there is almost always an open thread within the past 24 hours. There are, typically, only two windows that don’t have an open thread within the past 24 hours: from about 4:00 pm Wednesday to 8:00 am Thursday and 8:00 am to Midnight Friday.

    That’s only 33 of 168 hours in a week that “fails” your 24 hour criterion.

    Second, if more people considered it a norm that non-open threads should be for discussing the topic of the posts, then the open threads would easily remain fresh for more than 24 hours. You could be a HUGE help in that regard….

    I hate the term “non-open thread”, so if you don’t mind I’ll refer to it as a “topic thread” instead.

    I’ve noticed a lot of topic threads dont attract any of the trolls. Which is good, because sometimes we need a serious discussion about an issue without being diverted by trolls mouthing today’s Karl Rove/Fox News talking points. But it’s also bad, because sometimes we don’t have very many comments (the post itself is pretty self-explanitory). In such cases we look a bit like a “me too” chorus – and we don’t want to look like Stephan’s little blog.

    Maybe we just need to recruit better trolls who can actually argue about transportation and funding issues on a rational basis, without just getting silly.

    Just got this email from one one of Tim Burgess’s assistants.

    Thank you for your e-mail to Seattle City Councilmember Burgess regarding funding for the Thorne Lane Interchange and the Cross Base Highway. I apologize for the form e-mail but this was the fastest way to get a response out to the hundreds who wrote us on this topic. Tim voted with his colleagues on the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board yesterday morning to remove the project from eligibility for federal funding at this time.

    So, I thought I’d give Burgess a big public THANK YOU for his vote against the Thorn Lane interchange getting federal funding and keeping the stupid Cross Base Highway dead.

    Incorrect.

    REPUBLICANS SUCK may be a larger theme of the blog, but that is not the topic of most “topic threads” (h/t rhp6033).

    The narrower topic of a thread is controlling for “topic threads”. Therefore, if you meander outside that narrower topic, you are out of compliance with the comment policy.

    Taking advantage of the confusion:

    college years were rough for the Romney’s

    Just remember, that it was Romney who walked his way into this issue, albeit unintentionally:

    1. GOP candidates and Congress-critters open the “War on Women on a variety of issues. Limbaugh heats up the debate by attacking a college student who is just a witness with respect to her co-student’s problems.

    2. Romney tried to address his “gender deficit” by saying he consults with his wife on “women’s issues and concerns”.

    3. Journalists point out that Romney’s wife’s experiences are different from that of most working women.

    4. Romney’s wife argues that choosing to be a “stay-at-home-mom” of five is a full-time job.

    5. This opened up the door to further investigation, where it is revealed that Romney’s wife had a bit of help raising their kids – including the services of au pair’s (sp?), and the fact that she had a choice of whether or not to go to work, when many women don’t have that choice.

    6. Romney’s wife makes things worse when she tries to talk about the “dignity” of work when a woman doesn’t have a choice.

    7. Now Romney’s lifestyle and economic wealth are an open issue – along with the several homes he owns, including homes with elevators just for the cars.

    8. Romney’s wife tries to argue that they didn’t always have it so easy, once they had to “gasp” SELL STOCK to fund Mitt’s college (graduate) education.

    Romney and his wife just need to keep their mouths shut. I suspect that there is a conversation to that effect in Romney’s campaign headquarters right now. Romney’s best chance of winning is to say nothing off-script. No matter what the question, Romney should respond as if he were asked his opinion bout Obama’s handling of he economy, and at that point he should just lie.

    The best I could find is that Mitt & Ann Romney own three properties: one a mansion in La Jolla, California near San Diego, a Condo in Massachusetts, and a lakefront property in New Hampshire.

    The New Hamshire property actually consists of two large lots, including a stable with live-in quarters for stable-hands, tennis court, etc. The combined value is about $20 million. The New Hamshire property, in Ann’s name, appears to be their principle residence, and is rumored to have an elevator to handle several cars in the same garage.

    It’s been said that they had plans to tear down the La Jolla I(sp?) property in order to build a bigger home there, but the plans were put on hold due to the bad impression which it would make in Mitt’s political career. Mitt seems to be conscious of the problems encountered by McCain with respect to the number of his wife’s rather extravegant homes.

    Most of their assets appear to be in stock, cash, and cash equivilents, rather than real estate. It was rumored that Romney had six homes when he was considered as the VP nominee under McCain, but the combined total of homes of the two was considered a negative point, and kicked him out consideration. He’s apparantly discarded two homes – one at a ski resort in Utah, and another home in Masshachusetts, in recognition of the political realities.

    Speaking of the Secret Service and Teddy, I knew the Sercret Service agent who was stabbed while subduing an knife-wielding attacker at Kennedy’s senate offices somewhere about 1980 or so. I didn’t know he was an agent, or at least a former agent, until he was showing off his ammo room and I noticed a bunch of framed photos on the wall. At first glance I saw there were a bunch of guys in shades and suits in the photos. The second glance I saw President Ford in the photos with them. When I met him he’d just quit the Service to work as a body guard for Senator Kennedy and was preparing to move back east.

    One thing he said that I’ll never forgot. “I’m not afraid of people with guns or knives. I can deal with that. But bombs scare the fuck out of me.”
