But where Trump does not appear on a ballot, moderate suburban voters will swing to the GOP.
It’s a decades old idea, actually, with its roots in the Southern Strategy. But it is based on a fairly faulty understanding of the demographic change that the suburbs have undergone in the last twenty years. And the proof is really in the pudding in the special elections in the Senate in 2020 and 2021, as well as those prior.
The GQP will not retake the House next year. And they will further shrink their Senate minority. They will lose this battle in moderate suburbs. And they will lose it because with each passing day and week since Trump’s humiliating election loss in Nov of 2020 the party and its voters have grown and will continue to grow increasingly extremist, violent, undemocratic, and irrational.
Illustrating that the modern “conservative” GOP voter places a higher civic importance on accessing the plate sticker for their bass boat trailer than accessing the ballot is not a great predictor for future GOP success.

Late this morning lawyers representing the family of the police shooting victim announced publicly that they had been informed that the county would not be allowing them to view the body-worn camera evidence and that it would not be made public until the Sheriff has had an opportunity to remove images and audio from the evidence that might incriminate his deputies.

It sounds as if the murder victim was involved in illegal narcotics, and his family has acknowledged as much.
But that’s really not how our criminal justice system “claims” to work. As far as I understand (and the county is withholding details) the information submitted in the affidavit and application for a warrant established probable cause to grant a search of the premises. The police went there for that purpose and yet somehow ended up shooting a man who was departing from the area and according to eyewitnesses offered no threat to them.
If these are the facts then it appears that police shot an uncooperative witness who, if their search warrant was fruitful, might become a felony narcotics suspect. As we know now, their search warrant was not successful. From a legal perspective they shot an innocent man who offered no threat to them and who was within his rights to leave unless they had probable cause, which they did not, and do not.
Our legal system is not supposed to empower police to shoot “suspects” in the back for no reason. And probable cause for arrest (which would include shooting someone in the back as they are trying to leave) must be supported by more than mere suspicion. If ultimately no drugs or weapons were present, and no other criminal activity was witnessed by police, then no probable cause for an arrest existed.

Kevin McCarthy and Liz Cheney have been so much at odds with each other, and with their own caucus, that since Jan. 3rd they have been unable to even pretend to make plans to formulate legislative policy responses to the Biden administration and the Democratic majority. The entire first 100 days of the 117th Congress and the Biden White House have unfolded with House Republicans essentially frozen speechless in the stage lighting, unable to do anything more than vamp and mutter.
Clearly the Democratic leadership in the House deserve some credit, along with Schumer’s team and the White House. They got started last year in November, even while the outcome of the two Georgia Senate seats was still unknown. And they’ve moved swiftly and avoided most of the potential pitfalls for drama and delay. But it would be entirely unfair to deprive the GOP itself of much of the credit for this modern day political collapse.
This simply could not have happened in this way without a Trump administration directing all the party and media energy and focus on hundreds of spooky, weirdo lawsuits involving claims of dead Venezuelan dictator ghosts and invisible ink Sharpies. And the “conservative” paralysis could not have been sustained half way through the first year (and perhaps beyond) without Fur Bikini Assault Team Terrorist attacks and the ongoing daily ritualistic debasement of policy by prominent Republicans themselves, like Hawley, Cruz, Jordan, MTG, and the beloved Mathew Gaetz.
This is one #owngoal that we really should thank them for.

Biden is on the verge of passing one of the most ambitious legislative agendas in history with possibly the slimmest congressional majorities in history.
Not to be overlooked, as the Seattle Times reported yesterday, “Democratic lawmakers scored wins across the board” in Olympia this spring. “Many of those were priorities that stalled and sputtered at the Capitol for years.’
What accounts for these remarkable legislative victories? Certainly, a paralyzed GOP bogged down in Trumpism is part of it. But I think there’s more.
I think Democrats, and people in general, are so pissed at Republicans even the Joe Manchins of the world — people who normally would hesitate — are now in a mood to make Republicans eat shit.
