Interesting data point:
58 COVID-19 tests were administered to Utah Jazz players, staff and some beat writers covering the team in Oklahoma City, where Utah was to play the Thunder in a game that was called off moments before tipoff. All 58 of those tests were completed and analyzed for results by late Thursday.

Meanwhile docs in hotspots seeing patients exhibiting symptoms with suspected contacts have neither access to any such tests or even information about where to request them.

We’re not told which test was used. Since the CDC’s initial test was unreliable (and the first tests in China had sensitivity in the 70% range, also not good) there are a lot of companies developing their own assays.
Swiss firm Roche was just granted FDA approval for its version.
There could have been a not-yet-approved test performed. Rich guys who own sports teams sometimes are also guys who serve on boards of major pharmaceutical firms.
Don’t interpret this as a defense. I see your point. But “unofficial” testing done on a product in the final approval phases but not yet released for public use is a plausible explanation for the NBA access to tests not available generally.

Taxpayers, it seems, are a bottomless well when it comes to subsidizing sports teams. (You know by now how this works: We pay for the stadiums,* they collect all the revenues, including the parking fees and the profits from those little bags of salted peanuts.)
* Plural, not singular as in the old days when one stadium would do; now, every sport must have its own billion-dollar sports palace, because the team owners make more money that way.

But at least it is mostly a con targeting bored billionaires desperate to prove that their success is owing to brains rather than pure luck. I only complain when those billionaire groups come begging to pick my pocket to help them with their egos.
Don’t really know fuck all about Utah Jazz, except given the available market size and location they ought to have a half way decent chance of doing better than break even. It’s gotta be much harder in any market with lots of local competition. But SLC seems nearly ideal for a mid-market sports ball business. No other major pro sports, just three middling FBS college products, and damn few winter entertainment alternatives other than snow sports. NBA teams belong in places like SLC, Boise, etc.
They shouldn’t have any trouble charging whatever they need at the gate, and on the concourse to cover their nut without any taxpayer support. They’ll never make NYC, LA, or Chicago money. But they ought to be able to compete for rings. A perfect setting for a bored tech bro needing a retirement hobby.

Which puts GOP RapeHero suddenly squarely in opposition to his impeachment support base in the GOP Senate and 4chan Tiki Torch Nazi Rally base voters.
He now gets to tap up to $40 billion in theory, much of which was being directed toward DHS WALL and Guatemalan Toddler Torture. That could be managed if CPACvirus does not blow up south of the border and the “Remain in a Squalid Cholera Camp” policy is not overwhelmed by refugees. But it will deprive him of all that sweet, sweet virtue signaling to his MAGA FaceBook base.
The bigger problem is that while FEMA fund balance has $40 billion available, pretty much all of that balance is tentatively committed to recovery budgets and claims from previous disasters. Tapping into it will obligate Congress to appropriate more money to replace it. About half of previously appropriated funds are already obligated (under contract) elsewhere. And nearly all of what remains has been announced/allocated through the planning process which includes local government entities, states, NGOs, and their budgets.
So despite what you may be hearing today about FEMA money flowing to the CPACvirus affected areas, that probably won’t happen until the GOP Senate agrees to stay at work and delay their vacation tantrums. But I find it very improbable that any corporate officer of a company doing business in the US would order a violation of US laws “as a favor for a pal”. If it’s legal to buy from Chinese pharmacies over the web (gray area for some drugs) and delivered not sure why having team doctors collect swabs and send them outside the U.S. would really be a problem.
Also a business generating $8B/year in revenue might have calculated that when this is all over and IF investigations ever happen the public support for ‘doing the right thing law be damned’ will make any fines negligible and certainly no criminal charges.

Eventually the “panic phase” gives way to the “planning phase”.
If I could anticipate fund managers and institutional investors plans I wouldn’t have to take another idiot for a client. But alas, that is not the case. Still, I strongly suspect that we have only seen the beginning here. A marginally competent response, delayed by six weeks, mediated almost entirely at the state and local level, will still take many weeks to bring the basic reproduction number below 1.0. During most of that time the number of new cases will continue to rise exponentially before it begins to flatten out and eventually begin to decline. If, as I suspect, we are successful in slowing the advance of the contagion and limiting the impacts on the healthcare system, it will only come about as a result of a prolonged reduction in much economic activity.
It’s a grim calculus. And I assume that with economists, statisticians, quants, and lots of super computer time at their disposal big investment firms are going to be tracking the numbers very closely to decide when to take whatever profits they can before battening down the hatches and sailing for a safe harbor. I have no idea what number is most important. But I suspect that total deaths and death rate are among the key indicators. And sad to say, for the markets and economic growth, in this case more death is better.
Despite the dire consequences to the economy, I feel I’m being “hopeful” and “optimistic” here. Hopeful that fewer people will die. Optimistic that as a society we will limit the rate of growth, and thus prolong the epidemic, enabling our healthcare system to respond effectively before too many of us die. It’s really too bad that because of the delayed response inflicted by the GOP, we are probably faced with a choice between a rapid economic recovery and saving lives. We probably can’t have both. We missed that opportunity six weeks ago when Trump was still ordering doctors to stop testing people.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
39,
Pretty sure it wouldn’t be a violation of US law if they left the US to be tested.
Is that really what you are saying?
Other than LDTs* I think Doctors taking samples from patients in the US and sending them overseas for testing at facilities that are not FDA licensed would be a violation. FDA would view it as more or less Jim Bakker but without the mercury poisoning.
*Lab developed tests – I’m not even sure if FDA would be okay with this since part of the COVID-19 delay has involved LDTs and they’ve only recently changed their minds on that.
If you’re worried about the NBA I wouldn’t be. It doesn’t look great for a bunch of young, healthy millionaires to jump the line in front of a bunch of dying old people. But since when have appearances mattered to sports superstars? This will only become an issue if people working for pharma cos or Trump lackeys helped them do it. Which is a strong contender.

It’s not the “physical test” that matters. It’s the diagnosis that arises from it. That shit is highly regulated in the US. This isn’t “23 & Me”.
What’s in short supply aren’t swabs or PCR tubes. It’s facilities that meet the requirements for diagnostic reliability. This kind of testing is very easy to fuck up. All kinds of rigorous protocols have to be in place at both the sampling site and at the testing facility. It’s probably relatively easy to increase sampling, although poorly trained technicians can probably fuck that up too. Probably much harder to increase testing. And btw, those drugstore take home urinalysis kits are said to be unreliable as fuck. Actually if the expert testimony I’ve heard is to be believed, most of the employer drug urinalysis is highly unreliable as well. I mean, what the fuck do people expect for $5?
