Sound Transit has a history of making inflated demands on taxpayers. After mismanagement nearly sank the agency in the early 2000s, the ST2 ballot proposition was defeated in 2007 because voters deemed it too expensive. In 2008, voters passed a pared-down version costing $17 billion. Now, 8 years later, ST is back with ST3 costing THREE TIMES as much — $54 billion over 25 years. That’s $15,700, or $628 per year, for every man, woman, and child living in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties. A family of four would pay on average over $2,500 of new taxes a year, just for mass transit, not counting the taxes paid for all other governmental services. That’s crazy and unaffordable. I don’t often agree with the Seattle Times editorial board, but this time they’re right, everyone should “tap the brakes” on this thing and think harder about its affordability.
ST claims it would cost the average household $400 per year. Perhaps they’re factoring in population growth out to 2041, but if so, they foresee 6 times as many people in the 3-county area as live here now. I think it’s much more likely they’re lowballing the tax burden they seek to impose on an unwitting public. ST has a long history of lying about the real cost of their projects.
Here’s how I got my numbers: I looked up 2016 population estimates for King (1.93 million), Pierce (795k), and Snohomish (710k) counties, and totaled them (3.44 million). Then, I divided $54 billion by 3.44 million and divided again by 25 years. It’s pretty straightforward and you can double-check my math if you like. (After all, I’m only a rabbit.) I can’t get anywhere near $400 per year per household, even by assuming that every man, woman, and child in all 3 counties is a separate household.
ST3 perhaps should be seen as a wish list. In the past, ST has always reached for the moon and stars, and never more so than now. If this goes to the ballot as is, I will be a firm “no” vote. ST is asking Mrs. Rabbit and me to pay over $1200 a year — over $100 a month — for the rest of our lives for something that won’t be built in our lifetimes and that we have no use for. ST3 is for commuters, and we’re senior citizens who have no need for commuter transportation solutions, although we’re not blind to our neighbors’ need for it. We’re willing to pay something for transportation, but we’re already paying to ST, and when does enough become enough?
If this ridiculous ballot measure passes, when will ST spring ST4 on us, and how much will that cost in additional taxes? How about ST5, 6, and 7? Where does it end? (Answer: It doesn’t. The demands put on taxpayers like us for hyper-expensive public works projects is endless. The big spenders want every cent we have, and even then won’t stop.)
And it’s not like there’s any sense of economy exercised, or any respect shown to taxpayers, by these dreamers. For some damn reason I can’t figure out, everything built in our region has to be built the most expensive way possible. The gold platers are running amok. We have three major stadiums and schools that are falling apart. We voted against a half-billion-dollar baseball stadium and it was built anyway. Ninety percent of us voted “no” to a half-billion-dollar basketball palace and they’re still trying to build one, and do you really believe a big chunk of its cost won’t be shifted to the public? And then there’s the viaduct replacement; needless to say, the most expensive option, an underground tunnel, was selected. Ditto the hyper-expensive light rail tunnel from U District to Northgate. And now they’re talking about digging a second transit tunnel under downtown Seattle. Jeez.
No, I won’t vote for ST3, because it’s totally unrealistic. This kind of runaway spending, if it continues, will make the Puget Sound area uninhabitable for people and rabbits of earthly means.

I think it has been politically very foolish for Republicans to be so nakedly partisan with regard to the Supreme Court.
Particularly where it concerns public safety regulations for firearms, reproductive rights, and civil rights, the Republican party has been out of step with the majority of Americans for quite some time. And while it may be that they seek to influence the court to serve the interests of their corporate masters, all the attention goes toward those three issues that pander to the diminishing Republican base of angry, aging, white male bigots.
When voters have a chance to see what a moderate court reflective of broad social values is capable of, and when they understand now more than ever how Republicans are bent on subverting such a court, the effect out to be greater turnout by moderately aligned voters. Positioning themselves as obstructionists bent on controlling the Court and making it more socially conservative will not serve the party well in nationwide elections. And it will tend to promote voter recruitment and turnout for Democrats in general.

The 4.8% yield I’ll get on that stock is, what, 48 times your income from your bank savings? That stock doesn’t have to ever go up; I’ll do fine just by reinvesting and compounding the dividends. If it keeps going down I’ll buy more of it, and reinvest and compound even more dividends. Meanwhile, you can try to enjoy life on 1/10th of 1% interest, dumbfuck.

So perhaps rather than risk repudiating his own reasoning in Casey, Kennedy thought it better to assign the decis to a colleague he knew he could trust to focus on the evidence and avoid too much sermonizing.
In the end, there’s a difference between opening the barn door, and burning the barn to the ground. Republicans tried to use Casey to put a match to Roe v. Wade. The Court just took away their matches.
