Grandma, Grandma! What did you do when we started to find out that people were dying in US custody?
Well, sweetheart, I was very concerned. It was a difficult time. So I thought that I would spend my time and talent on the most important thing. I decided that if I didn’t nitpick the people opposing them, who would. So I went online, and I pretended that concentration camps was a phrase only used by Nazis. I, as you can see, was the real hero.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I doubt the Nazis used the term “concentration camps,” at least not publicly. As I recall, they called them “resettlement” camps.
Don’t overlook the big difference between Nazi and Trump concentration camps, though. Hitler used them to kick people out of the country. Trump uses them to keep people from coming in.

2,
Media speculation notwithstanding, I don’t think the committee expected any differently.
It’s possible that part of the strategy here is to set the stage and the agenda for what follows from a binding court order later on. Getting this on the record now, from as many of the participants as possible, and yes including a subpoena refusal, can make things proceed rather efficiently later on. It might not be the preferred course of action. But it’s the only one they’ve got.
As to when or from where that binding order emerges it looks to me like the committee chairs are all acting in concert to open up as many legal channels as possible and then to choose and prioritize among those for the most favorable outcome. They have multiple cases each from Judiciary, Oversight and Reform, Intelligence, Ways and Means, Banking, Taxation, and Financial Services, among others.
As well as holdover cases from civil suits out of the previous Congress that are still working their way through the courts.
A judge’s assessment of a party’s demeanor and legal position is greatly influenced by the history of the litigation. Building out a massive record of bad faith arguments on the part of the administration with respect to Congressional oversight authority makes it more likely that more nuanced or narrowly crafted arguments in later proceedings will be swept aside. And building multiple case and opportunities in multiple courts and jurisdictions for the pursuit of such an outcome allows the leadership legal team to shop for the most favorable venue and timing.
It’s safe to assume that the chairs of each of these committees are well acquainted with the political history behind these kinds of confrontations between the branches. And it would be naive to think that at least some of them are not hoping to elevate their own political stature on a national stage as a result. So part of the behind the scenes scrum has involved the Speaker and the senior leadership negotiating the order and typeface in the playbill with each of those committee chairs. It’s going to be more complicated than it should be. And it might not always be what’s best for exposing the GOP’s corruption in an open proceeding. But nevertheless it does have to follow a methodical and calculated process to achieve the best outcome.

Thanks to how he chose to respond to this, I estimate that pool of opportunities is now significantly reduced in both size and quality.
I’m not sure if he’s an idiot-savant, or just being used and influenced by a bunch of sociopaths. But bear in mind that prior to this episode, his grades, his history, his scores, and his resume were good enough for Harvard. Timing aside, he could have gained acceptance into a massive universe of top notch academies for entrance in 2020 if he had not chosen to make this into a media circus. Even assuming that his ugly, pathological racism came out, a good percentage of those schools would have been willing to forgive it.
But not now. Not now that he’s turned the question into this ponderous millstone of identity politics on the far right. Every admissions year is different. And every year is a new process. So any school who previously extended an offer can now politely invite him to re-apply and then subsequently decline. And most will. For most admissions committees at private schools their decision to decline will remain entirely private. Most will have no difficulty avoiding the controversy and the hassle. And that was all entirely foreseeable for any kid smart enough to get into Harvard. He’s doing this to himself. He is unworthy of anyone’s sympathy.

comprehensive with no major asset classes exempt from wealth taxation.
http://gabriel-zucman.eu/files.....warren.pdf
So Red, what happens to tax-free municipal funds when it turns out they’re subject to a 2% tax on principal each year, hmmmmmmmmm?
The Berkeley dude who ran numbers for Warren didn’t game out the higher interest rates municipalities and states would have to pay once tax-free investments become taxable investments.
Who’s gonna invest in short-term paper paying 2% when the tax on the principal used to make that investment is……
wait for it……..
2%?
Pull your head out of your asshole every now and then, Red.
At the bottom of the analysis the Berkeley dudes point out that the federal taxes on the wealthiest individuals subject to the Warren surcharge would increase, on average, a whopping 34%.
You think there won’t be serious repercussions to the economy when Warren initiates class warfare, Red?
Oh, Red, I have one final question. How are you going to get this through the Senate, asswipe?
@godwinha spews:
Here’s an example, Red:
One of the recent recommended investments in US News and World Report is this one:
VanEck Vectors AMT-Free Short Municipal ETF (SMB)
For more conservative investors, Pfeffer suggests SMB. He says it’s appropriate for people who want less risk because it holds shorter maturity bonds. The ETF tracks a market-weighted index of tax-exempt municipal bonds with maturities of one to six years, with a weighted average of 4.45 years. The fund holds a mix of revenue bonds, which comprise 58% of the holdings, with general obligation bonds making up 37%. Bonds from New York, California and Texas are among the top three holdings. Because the duration is shorter, the yield is a bit smaller at 1.75%.
https://money.usnews.com/investing/buy-and-hold-strategy/slideshows/8-best-municipal-bond-funds-to-buy-and-hold?onepage
So you have $50 million in assets and you’re subject to the tax Warren wants to apply. Do you invest in medium-duration munis paying an average of 1.75% if you are going to lose 2% each year to the Warren tax?
No? Well, then I guess municipalities will have to pay higher interest rates to attract investment, right, Red?
Where will the money to pay those higher interest rates resulting from the Warren tax come from, Red?

We really just don’t know. In this case, the courts applied the Lemon Test and found that the cross complied. A 7-2 vote with strong dissent and differences in concurrence suggests anything but finality. When Alito specifically argues that the symbol in question is secular in nature, it’s not much of a home run for the compulsory prayer crowd. The other value is that there is a concurring opinion that people do not have a right not to be offended. Suck it up, Buttercup.

Your tribe has forgotten basic principles, such as, What goes around, comes around. Get back to us when you and your ilk decide to rejoin civilized society.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@46 “If people subject to Warren’s tax would be underwater on their Treasury note investments after the tax is applied” then they’ll have a tiny inkling of what it feels like to be a middle class family bankrupted by medical bills after their insurance company denied coverage for a pre-existing condition.
Your party doesn’t give a shit about those people, so why should we give a shit about people who making their living by clipping tax-free municipal bond coupons?
Isn’t one of the trade-offs of our capitalist system the fact that investors aren’t guaranteed a profit and can lose money on their investments?
If someone loses money on an investment, maybe they should have chosen their investments more wisely. You frequently say so yourself. Are you reneging on that now?
Roger Rabbit spews:
Every homeowner pays a wealth tax. I play roughly 1% of the value of my home to tax authorities every year. Why the hell should municipal bond coupon clippers be exempt from a similar tax? What makes them special and privileged? When middle class housing is not? Fuck that, this whining will get no sympathy from me.
RedReformed spews:

Silly Rabbit. Risk is only for little people, the rich get socialism to protect them from risk.

There’s a good opportunity in the SCOTUS October 2018 term to see in action how obsessive genuflecting to the Court’s ideological balance can have very mixed results.
Take a look at Manhattan Community Access Corp. v. Halleck published a couple of days ago. I don’t wan’t to give away the plot. But First Amendment protections apply differently depending on what is at stake and where they are being applied. And though it’s been a struggle lately to keep this in mind, the guarantees against abridging “protected expression” only apply to the state (government). This is a 5-4 vote along the so-called “ideological” split in The Court, the “conservative” majority holding that the petitioner, a privately owned and operated cable public access provider, was acting as a private entity when it told a couple of filthy stinking smelly community activists they could fuck right off with their socialistic propaganda. Private entity means they are not bound by Constitutional restrictions and they can do as they like. And superficially and without further analysis that might seem like really sticking it to the damn hippies.
But see, the thing is, Google, Facebook, etc are all clearly private companies. And nothing about what they do or the products and services they sell is in any way intended to form a nexus to public services or the state (government). So while it may please Crazy Uncle Freedumb to hear his favorite AM HateRadio “personality” describe how the hippies cried lots of real tears when the CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY gave them THE SHAFT, it’s crucial for him to quickly move on and not think much more about it.
Because thanks to this decision MILO, Ben Shapiro, and other social media celebrities whose livelihood depends on dancing with violent white supremacy just lost big time. And it makes it conceptually that much harder when the League of Aggressive Church Ladies wants to use the law to prevent a private satellite entertainment service from programming a few hours of explicit Tijuana donkey shows after midnight.

Not all property is taxed. Only tangible property — real estate, cars, etc. — is subjected to what you might call “wealth taxes,” i.e., taxes based on the value of the property. I’m not against these taxes; they pay for necessary state and municipal services, such as schools, roads, police and fire, etc.
But our federal government is running large and unsustainable deficits, and our society as a whole has huge and unmet spending needs. At the same time, you can’t expect the broke, indebted, and financially stressed working classes to pay more taxes.
Financial assets are a huge and untapped potential tax source. There’s no legal or logical reason why financial wealth shouldn’t be taxed, when the houses and cars owned by ordinary wage earners are taxed.
But at the very least, if you insist on exempting the 10% who own 86% of the financial assets from paying property taxes on that form of wealth, stop complaining about deficits.

Roy Moore has announced. Susan Collins has not.
Some kind of fitting, modern GOP symmetry there.
@godwinha spews:
Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit is wrong. Again. In @ 78 he claims
Not all property is taxed. Only tangible property — real estate, cars, etc. — is subjected to what you might call “wealth taxes,” i.e., taxes based on the value of the property.
And yet (link above) the Berkeley analysts clearly state that no wealth category is untaxed. Again,
8) It is important to emphasize that our computations assume that the wealth tax base is
comprehensive with no major asset classes exempt from wealth taxation.
Bonds and stocks are tangible property, too. Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit would admit that if he would pull his head out of his rectal catheter long enough to give it some thought.
It is important to emphasize that Roger Dumbfuck Rabbit has failed as an attorney and as an investor. He just showed you one of the reasons for his failures.

Nice to see the DJIA within 1% of the 27,000 milestone.
And six-plus months left in which to achieve it in 2019.
Gotta credit the Dems for their role in widening income inequality.
Hats off to ‘froggy, too, for populating the far left side of the bell curve.

@79 No thanks necessary. I’m simply serving my country.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@81 “Bonds and stocks are tangible property, too.”
Not for tax purposes,
https://realestate.findlaw.com/owning-a-home/types-of-property-for-tax-purposes.html
… and I’m talking about taxes.
How you might use the terms “tangible” and “intangible” under various esoteric accounting definitions intended for other purposes is irrelevant.
But you’re not even doing that. You’re merely cherry-picking a definition in a vain attempt to salvage your bullshit argument, in the same way that you cherry-pick facts to support your bullshit arguments on other topics, and not dissimilar from how pork sauce cherry-picks crime reports to attack immigrants. You’re not fooling anyone. All the regular HA readers are onto your game.

Hey doc, since conservatives have neither facts nor logic going for them, why don’t you come over to our side? You’d have a chance to win an argument or two, instead of being a chronic loser.
