While I’ve had problems with Mayor Murray before, I have to say, his stance on keeping Seattle a sanctuary city has been pretty great. The federal money could be a hit in places. But it’s not even near as bad as turning the city into an arm of Trump’s anti-immigrant goon squad.
I was also heartened to read the outlines of a legal strategy. I’m not a lawyer, but Trump’s usual strategy of bullying people with an incentive to settle probably won’t work as well in this case. Our elected officials have a much greater incentive to fight him.
In the mean time, I’m all for creative ways to make up the money.
How about raising the minimum wage to $20/hr in Seattle?
Wouldn’t that double the number of cranes on buildings in Seattle, create tons of new jobs, and through taxation of that earned income provide enough to bridge any shortfall?

If push comes to shove, the first thing we’ll want to do is neutralize the military assets on those fake islands, which straddle the shipping lanes and obviously are designed to threaten the one-third of the world’s seaborne commerce that passes through those lanes. We can’t fuck around with this. China is getting aggressive, and rattling the saber, and sooner or later our leaders will have to make a decision between appeasement and surrender, or defending freedom of navigation. What to do about the South China Sea probably will be the most serious issue of Trump’s presidency, and he’d better get it right. The Mexican border wall is just a distraction. That money would be better spent on building another carrier task force or upgrading our antisubmarine and/or antimissile capabilities.
