Our nation’s response to yesterday’s attack should be no less urgent, sweeping, or forceful than our response to the September 11 attacks. We don’t need a call for a police state. Far from it. In some ways it is our police state and the police state’s willing participation in the rise of Trump that brought this on. But we do need legal and political reforms that bring about transparency and accountability.
This attack was intentional, organized, and planned just as much as the last attack. At the very least, who organized it, who planned it, and how they did it must be known and understood so that we can be sure it never happens again. Organizing and planning a violent assault on a legislature is no more a protected form of political expression than carrying out such an assault.

Congress is being called back in session today. Best current estimates are it will take the House until the middle of next week to send articles of impeachment to the Senate.
