Mathematics isn’t a special case. It isn’t some kind of magical elixir that if you can only “gavage” enough of it into some random kid they’ll grow up being able to solve real world problems and figure shit out.
It’s symbolic reasoning. Reasoning by means of a metaphorical system using special set of symbols. Can just as easily be noises instead of numbers – either words or other sounds (music). But images and pictographs can work just as well.
Point being if you don’t bother to teach these kids how to reason in some fashion, using some metaphorical system, it hardly matters how well they are able to regurgitate rules of any one particular metaphorical system.
If you want a job at Google you need to bring something to the table other than a long list of AP math courses, or how well you (or your parents) “competed” with other children (or their parents) to gobble up the privilege.
