I am starting to run out of stuff that I can’t replace at Pike Place Market or the corner store. I am currently eating some toast with the last of the Marmite. And I am nearly out of my favorite hot sauce. Both of these are things that I would pick up at the World Market, but it’s closed. I know that I could probably get these things online, but I would prefer not to have delivery people come into the building — that has elderly and immunocompromised people — just so I can get my preferred spread or hot sauce when others are available.

We might debate how well Republicans are capable of responding to a booming economy without a killer pandemic sweeping the globe. I think such a debate is pointless. But some people seem to think this “Supply Side” orthodoxy crap could work under perfect circumstances.
But slashing government spending right now is not going to be something most voters will agree is a good approach when they see the effects. Gutting police and fire agencies, closing prisons, closing public schools, slashing support for battered and abused children, closing parks and libraries, closing courts and public buildings, canceling transportation projects, and firing huge numbers of public employees is something that would alarm the fuck out of most voters and most consumers right now.
Yet that is precisely what GOP economic chiefs are calling for and what Moscow Mitch and House Republicans hope to pull off in the next year or two, if they are allowed. If president RapeHero is reelected and can gain control of the House that is exactly what they will do. They will premise it as a “responsible remedy” for recovery. It will be the US version of the austerity disaster that unfolded in most of the EU following the last GOP Recession. And the 25 million unemployed that the GOP created last month will soon become 50 million unemployed.

Roger Rabbit spews:
@34 I think there are certain narrowly-defined situations where carefully tailored and targeted* supply-side policies can result in a net increase of economic output. For example, a capital-starved economy in which demand outstrips supply and suppliers can’t expand output due to a general shortage of capital; then, policies designed to increase savings rates, etc., if done right, may raise economic growth, expand supplies of goods and services, and reduce inflationary price pressures caused by shortages.
But applying a supply-side “solution” to every economic problem is like prescribing the same pill for every ailment, or painting a picture with only one color.
*And then there’s the fact that Republicans aren’t capable of tailoring and targeting anything, and aren’t careful about anything, in any situation. Adding this ineptness to Republican dogmatism, you get Supply Side Stoopid. Every. Fucking. Time.

Rural trailerbillies get it precisely backward.
Density is a consequence, not a cause.
These stupid fucks think that intensive development of underlying land resource is public policy rather than a consequence of market forces.
The public policy is adequate transportation, good schools, abundant water resources, publicly owned utilities, well trained and well equipped emergency services, and ample investments in infrastructure. Those public policies attract private investments which in turn drive up land values. Intensity of development is in direct proportion to the value of the land.
There’s nothing out there in rural America because stoopid, lazy, ignorant, self-harming greed-head klownsurvaturds refuse to make any public investment in anything. All they ever manage to do is periodically perform begging-bowl stunts at state capitals with convoys of farm tractors, logging trucks, and dump trucks.
But Trump has introduced The New Federalism. So now trailerbillies will just have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, fix their own fucking potholes and extinguish their own tire fires. The 80% of Americans who live in metros are cutting off their allowance.
Elijah SFA McDotcom spews:
Nearly 2000 Americans will die today who would not have died otherwise, but for the decision that 63 million Republican voters made after listening to their candidate confess to a lengthy history of violent sexual assaults against women.
Twenty five million Americans are out of work today who would not otherwise be out of work, but for the decision that 63 million Republican voters made after listening to their candidate confess to a lengthy history of violent sexual assaults against women.
Fifty million Americans who otherwise would have retired on time, will now have to work additional years for their retirement because of the decision that 63 million Republican voters made after listening to their candidate confess to a lengthy history of violent sexual assaults against women.

Was listening to a podcast, shoutout to Edge of Sports and Dave Zirin!, about the economics of sport going forward. At some point the NFL will restart. And the NBA. Both have very large TV contracts and could conceivably play in empty stadiums and still be profitable.
The tough ones are Hockey and MLS since their TV deals are pretty small and a huge part of league revenue is gate receipts.
Added pressure the big three, MLB, NBA, NFL the owners are largely independently billionaires for whom an NFL team is a plaything not a primary income stream. That’s not necessarily the case with NHL, rare with MLS and not at all in NWSL.
Though I’d wonder about who are the “fans” in the poll. Are they season ticket holders, 2-3 baseball games a year? “Die-Hard” 12s who have never set foot in Century Link? Looks like they polled “Americans”. there’s an old CNBC poll that says only 34% of American’s spend money on Pro Sports in their entertainment budgets. so down from about 1/3 to 1/4 post Corona so it’s probably not as bad as it seems.

With box sales having become a big part of the stadium finance packages I think more than a few cities and their taxpayers may take a beating.
As individuals we engage in very different risk calculation when compared to business. Plenty of individual fans might decide they are comfortable wearing a mask and heading to the cheap seats to cheer on their beloved team.
But does the client really want to attend a game in the vendor’s luxury box and have that drunken sales rep spitting in his face for five hours? Who cares if the beer is free? Nobody is wearing a mask or practicing social distancing in those boxes. Box sales could plummet. And without the box sales the stadium authorities have to turn to the taxpayers for a bailout.
